An Experiment Off Valencia
Valencia, Spain: With a view towards helping determine if a monohull or multihull is better suited for America's Cup racing, event planners have scheduled four days of trials here to develop methods for making the racing more enthralling for fans, more challenging for crews and better portrayed on television screens around the world.

Concept papers for a new monohull and multihull design were issued on July 2 to independent rule writers in the United Kingdom and U.S.

The trials, July 22-25, will help confirm certain parameters of the new yacht, including reduced crew numbers to place a premium on boathandling.

Not only will the format of racing and type of boat come under scrutiny, but also television production.

The America's Cup Media Evaluation Team has solicited opinions from a wide array of broadcasters, digital media and technology companies in Europe and the U.S. on how to make the racing more dramatic on-line, on-screen and on TV.

The trials will be conducted with two pairs of X40 catamarans and RC44 sloops. 3D and HD cameras will be experimented with to see if the onboard action is more dramatically portrayed, and the race format testing will include downwind and reaching starts.

Guest helmsmen such as Roman Hagara of Austria and Murray Jones of New Zealand will lead the crews aboard the X40s.

A pair of RC44s will provide the high-performance monohull baseline for the trials. James Spithill, the youngest ever America's Cup winning skipper will be at the helm of one of the two yachts. They will race short-handed, eight-person crews to see if that adds a level of drama to boathandling that would be compelling for television.

Cork Week Well it doesn't get better than this; gusting over 20 knots with wind over tide, kicking up the surf, the penultimate day of Cork Week was a day for some ballistic racing and a few dramatic moments.

Super Zero
Racing kicked off with a beat across the approach to Cork Harbour in the open sea to Ringabella Bay for the big boat class. There was drama right at the start, as Stephane Neve's TP52 Paprec Recyclage came off a huge wave and down with a thump, blowing out their head sail. It took the French team minutes to recover, as the rest of the fleet blasted to windward. Austin Fragomen's TP52 Interlodge rounded the top mark first with Johnny Vincent's TP52, Pace in hot pursuit. They hoisted kites, exploding down the run at a good twenty knots, in a ball of spray.

The IRC Zero fleet then headed off into the confines of Cork Harbour and as if going in for half time, the harbour provided some refuge from the big breeze outside. Then it was back into the combat zone outside the harbour for some more on the edge surfing. The crew on Laidlaw and Gray's Farr 52, Bob, could hardly contain themselves; fully hiked out downwind, they were spotted whooping with delight, as they turbo charged through the surf.

Austin Fragomen's TP52, Interlodge took the gun and the race win on big Thursday, Austin has wanted to do Cork Week for some time and helmed the boat in some truly awesome conditions. Not a bad effort for a man well past retirement age.

Johnny Vincent's Pace took second place in the race, to keep a two point lead overall. Interlodge are second and Bob third.

J 109 European Championship
Title contender, Robert O'Leary's Jeroboam, was flying when the pole failed to take the strain and buckled under load, forcing them to retire, pushing them down to third overall. John Maybury's Joker II got into difficulties on the lea-shore behind Roches Point. Bowman, Sean Paul White, bravely climbed the rig to free the tangled spinnaker but all on board were unhurt in the incident.

Today's race was won by Ken Grant's Scottish crew on Tigh Soluis, who get plenty of practice in these conditions. Brian Moreton's Juke Box was only 22 seconds behind and remains in second place for the title. Greg Burgess's Blue Jay did not fair as well today, coming 8th, but is still the overall leader for the J 109 European Championship.

IRC Zero
Anthony O'Leary's Ker 39, Antix was impressive today, winning by just over two minutes, O'Leary explains that crew work was paramount today.

"We have plenty of practice gybing in heavy weather and coming back downwind from Ringabella Bay, we put in a couple of great moves which was a key to our success."

Dave Dwyer's Mills 39, was second in today's race. Richard Matthews, Humphreys 42, Oystercatcher XXVI went around the course like a rocket ship to take line-honours but were third on corrected time. Going into the last day. Nemo of Cowes leads the class but only by two points from So still all to play for in this very competitive class.

Two races are scheduled for tomorrow, the last day for Cork Week 2010. There will be a few sore muscles, after the testing conditions today, but the race village is still buzzing with life. The most popular spot after racing is the bar at the Royal Cork Yacht Club. No doubt a few more stories were told there today, to add to the 290 year history.

Final Stage Of Clipper 09-10 Round The World Yacht Race Underway
The ten yachts competing in the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race have begun the last stage of their 35,000-mile challenge and are racing across the North Sea to their final destination, the Humber in north east England.

The strong winds led to a delay in the race start with Uniquely Singapore suffering from a broken halyard and Team Finland's mainsail splitting as they pulled out of the harbour. So at 1948 local time (1748 GMT) in 20 to 25 knots of wind, Race 14 got underway with the nine Clipper 68s, comprising of Edinburgh Inspiring Capital, Jamaica Lightning Bolt, Uniquely Singapore, Team Finland, Qingdao, Cape Breton Island, Hull & Humber, Spirit of Australia and California, nicely lined up for the start.

Hull & Humber was first off the mark, closely followed by Team Finland. But despite a good start, the Finnish entry's inability to change up from a second reef due to their mainsail damage saw them quickly drop to the rear of the fleet. Having recovered from their broken halyard, Uniquely Singapore could keep up with the early pacesetters of Spirit of Australia and Hull & Humber.

Now the teams are chasing down Cork who, in accordance with their IRC handicap, started a couple of hours before the Clipper 68s and with just 180-miles of race track in which to do so, the final leg of Clipper 09-10 will be fast and furious.

The morning of Saturday 17 July will see the fleet race up the Humber In the presentational John Harrison Race from King George Dock to St Andrew's Quay. The race, which starts at 0930, has been named in the memory of the 18th Century clockmaker from Barrow-on-Humber who invented the marine chronometer which measures longitude.

More than 150,000 people were in Hull to bid farewell to the fleet when they set sail from the city in September last year. Tens of thousands are expected to line the banks of the Humber and the quayside in Hull Marina to welcome home the ten yachts and their intrepid crews. After ten months of battling the elements, away from friends and families, their homecoming this weekend is sure to be an emotional one.

Extreme 40 World Championship Day 2
The stunning coastline of Slovenia was showcased on day two of the Extreme 40 World Championship with two coastal races. In a break from traditional short and fast courses, the six high octane Extreme 40 catamarans raced from their base at Portoroz 15 kilometres along the coast to the bustling port city of Koper and back again. The longer double-point coastal races highlighted the versatility of the class, gave crews an on-water tour of their host country and dazzled spectators with intense action taking place close to the shore.

After an exciting day's racing yesterday, the second day of the first ever Extreme 40 World Championship, hosted by The Ocean Racing Club at the Kempinski Palace Hotel in Portoroz, was to be no let down. Racing started in building 6-8 knot breeze, with the first upset came when Shirley Robertson's Team Kempinski/Great Britain, who had led the fleet for the majority of the first race, were reigned in by home side The Ocean Racing Club skippered by Mitch Booth. The Ocean Racing Club made use of crewmember and Portoroz resident Tomaz Copi's local knowledge passing Team Kempinski/Great Britain in the latter part of the race. Booth, co-creator of the Extreme 40 class, eventually steered The Ocean Racing Club to victory, crossing the finish line in one hour and ten minutes.

Andreas Hagara's Team Petras/France also sneaked by Team Kempinski/Great Britain to snatch second place with Robertson having to settle for third. Roman Hagara's Red Bull Extreme Sailing crossed the line in fourth, followed by Team Nokia/Hungary and Team IWC/Holland.

New Boats, New Teams and New Events
The RC 44 Class is pleased to announce the arrival of two new top level teams, who will join the Championship Tour before the end of the year.

Synergy, the Russian team for the America's Cup led by Karol Jablonski - a veteran of the RC 44 Class - plans to join the Tour during the first official Class World Championship: the RC 44 Puerto Calero Islas Canarias Cup (October 11-16). Also confirmed, an American team will join the Tour during the Oracle RC 44 Cup Miami on December 7-12 at the latest.

Both teams have already confirmed that they will compete in 2011. Their new boats are currently being built at Pauger boatyard, in Hungary. They will be the RC 44's no 23 and 24. Pauger is the only licensed RC 44 builder and it has built all the RC 44's involved in the Championship Tour.

The RC 44 Class recently announced its project to expand to North America. The first regatta on US territory, the Oracle RC 44 Cup Miami, will take place on December 7 - 12 in South Beach Marina; it will be the closing event of the Tour 2010.

Following the Oracle RC 44 Cup Miami, the first regatta of the Championship Tour 2011 will also take place in the United States (west coast) whilst other regattas will be organised on American waters in the coming years. -- Bernard Schopfer

Joining Forces In Melbourne

Meteor 100 Yachting Developments currently have a 100ft composite performance cruising sloop under construction at its yard in Auckland. From the design board of naval architects Dixon Yacht Design the vessel is referred to as build number YD69, or by its project name "Meteor 100"

The composite structure is post cure epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar incorporating high strength foam sandwich technology. From the design board of naval architects Dixon Yacht Design, Sailing yacht Meteor 100's hull has a Kevlar outer skin for outstanding impact resistance.

The cruising sloop Meteor 100 (YD69) has a blond teak interior designed by Rhodes Young and being built in-house by Yachting Developments specialist tradesman. Build number YD69's interior features wide walnut planked floors, and comfortable sofas. The owner's stateroom is full beam with private access to the cockpit.

The spars and rigging of the S/Y Meteor 100 are carbon fibre with hydraulic furlers, the mainsheet is attached to an arch aft keeping the mainsheet clear of passengers and crew. The modern underwater shape includes a high-aspect carbon fibre rudder with direct quadrant non-assisted steering giving absolute feel to the helmsman.


McConaghy Optimist

The new McConaghy Optimist, the M1 splashed at Woollahra sailing club in Sydney recently, with two of the M1's competing in the East Coast Championships.

Both M1 Optimists arrived from McConaghy boats in China three days before the regatta, so this was the first opportunity to see how they handled in the shifty SSW 18- 20 knots winter breeze on day one. The young test pilots were Brodie Crossman and Jim Colley, a couple of great young sailors who had a blast and didn't stop grinning - leading the fleet in one of the opening rounds, before match racing each other out of podium places in that race! -- Blue Robinson


 Havana 72

The Havana 72 yacht is the first model of the Havana series built by Alu Marine, with the interior and exterior design by Berret Racoupeau Yacht Design.

An aluminium sailing yacht with a length over 17 metres and a draught of 80 centimetres? Thanks to a lift keel (0.80 - 3.15m), two retractable rudders and a 15 mm aluminium bottom, this Stadtship 56 can safely rest on mud flats, navigate shallow coastal waters and cross oceans. This yacht is easy to sail with a two-man crew. The long water line and water ballast create a comfortable and fast sailing yacht. This is the second Stadtship 56 built by the shipyard in Makkum. The first Stadtship 56, 'Oester', was completed in 2005 and served as the inspiration for the owners of the 'Merrimac'.

'Merrimac' is outwardly the same as 'Oester'. The unpainted hull makes the sleek aluminium clearly visible. The deck is painted Oyster white with anti-slip on the walking areas. The carbon mast originates from Hall Spars with a Park Avenue boom made by K&M. The foresail is bent onto a "self tacking" Hoyt boom.

The new Palmer Johnson 52m has recently launched at Solent Refit on Southampton Water. This was a major achievement, as the boat had to be transferred from the build shed, along the dockside to the slipway. This intricate operation was undertaken with the use of an Alladays hydraulic computer controlled transporter.

Once transferred to the transverse slipway system at Solent Refit this magnificent superyacht was lowered into the water and moved to the outer superyacht pontoons. All went very smoothly.
