The city is home to the Golden Gate Yacht Club, whose team BMW ORACLE Racing, won the 33rd America's Cup in Valencia, Spain on 14 February. The 34th America's Cup is scheduled for 2013 or 2014, the year to be determined by infrastructure development lead-times.
In being granted status as the sole venue candidate in the USA, San Francisco can forge ahead with plans to provide the necessary facilities for the America's Cup along the City's waterfront, south of the Bay Bridge. It also now allows San Francisco to "nationalize" their efforts and to seek support from the State of California and the federal government in Washington, D.C.
Under the Cup's governing rules, the Deed of Gift written in 1852, the winner and hence Defender for the next Match chooses the venue.
Russell Coutts said, "We are extremely grateful to the other American candidates. Their disappointment is understandable as each would have been a great host city in its own right. And we appreciate their offers of support to San Francisco going forward.
Strong expressions of interest from four European countries are also being studied by the American Defender. GGYC/BOR will announce a final decision on the venue, along with the date and other details of the next America's Cup by the end of this year.
Sweden's tortuous round robin slaughtered the bookies' favourites with Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/Black Match Racing, winner of this year's Match Race Germany and Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing who claimed victory only 10 days ago at Portimao out for the count along with Bjorn Hansen (SWE) Hansen Global Team, Staffan Lindberg (FIN) Alandia Sailing Team, Johnie Berntsson (SWE) Berntsson Sailing Team, Reuben Corbett (NZL) Black Sheep Racing, Keith Swinton (AUS) Black Swan Racing losing all of his matches along with Mattias Rahm (SWE) Stena Bulk Sailing Team, winner of Stena Match Cup Sweden 2 years ago.
The quarter finals are now consolidated down to 8 skippers with Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar and Jesper Radich (DEN) Rudy Project Sailing Team winning each of their groups. Radich will be first to pick his opponent for the quarters which is a huge psychological boost as he gets to select his jousting partner out of Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing, Francesco Bruni (ITA) Azzurra, Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar, Damien Iehl (FRA) French Match Racing Team, Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team, Ben Ainslie (GBR) TEAMORIGIN and Magnus Holmberg (SWE) Sigma Racing Team
Leaders Extend Their Leads In Short Offshore Race
Riccardo Di Bartolomeo's Grand Soleil 42R0 MAN and Francesco Siculiana's Grand Soleil 40RC Alvarosky have won the short offshore race, earning 1.125 points in the 1.5 point-weighted race and taking to three races their respective winning streaks in Class A and Class B. With second place finishes in Class A and B respectively, nearest rivals Raffaele Archivolti's Beneteau First 50 Saphira and Gianfranco Cioce's Comet 38S Scricca have also maintained their position in the standings.
And while the standings have remained somewhat stratified in Class B, there has been some re-shuffling among the standings in Class A, where the Valente-Stillitano-Bernardo syndicate's striking NM43 Nautilus Wave has overtaken Maurizio Biscardi's equally-striking Comet 50 Verve-Dahlia TV for third place in the standings.

Thursday's tricky wind conditions made it a difficult day for racing, not only for the sailors but also for the Race Committee. Races started in the afternoon in 12 knots of wind which gradually dropped to 3-4 knots, forcing the committee to send the fleets back to shore after completion of only two of the three races scheduled for the day.
Due at least in part to the diffgicult conditions, places keep changing in the top ten of both the boy and girl rankings. Francisca Russo had another bullet today in the first race but didn't find her way in the second, in which she finished in 37th place. However, she is still the leader of the fleet, with a 21 point gap separating her from Evangelia Drougka from Greece, in second place. Evangelia sailed to her best today, finishing 4th and 1st in the first and second races respectively, as did Paula Barcelo from Spain.
Konstantinos Oikonomidis proved very skillful in reading the wind in today's conditions as he finished first in both races. Meanwhile another Greek sailor, Grigorios Mazarakis, has climbed in the ranking and is now second after finishing 7th and 3rd.

250 Boats and a King Starts in Eurocard Gotland Runt
Many of Sweden's the best sailors are out on the Baltic, as well as Norwegians, Finns, Germans, Lithuanians and Britts all competing in Eurocard Gotland Runt. More specifically, In the IRC C class; Norway's King Harald, the German girl team Tutima and one Lithuanian Ambersail with Saulius Pajarskas as skipper. In the ORC International Alfa class Jonas Wikström starts with his Amarone, finish Rauli Leino with his Xantippa, Carl Wale from KSSS with Walenna II and the interesting Midnight Rambler Youth Challenge with the great sailors Anders Levander and Gurra Krantz including the youngsters Sara Franklin and Fredrik Olsson onboard. Finish boat Tarantella II is also competing, this year being 40 years since first start in Eurocard Gotland runt with half of the initial crew.
In ORC International Bravo, last year's overall winner, Ralf Aspholm on Datacom will fight for victory with reknown sailors Roger Nilsson and Thomas Blixt on board. In the same class is 2008's winner Fredrik Hertzman on DuSolei and the young crew on SALT with Staffan Wincrantz as skipper.
In ORC Bravo several skippers are of interest, Magnus Woxen, sails a Farr 30 together with Ericsson skipper Martin Krite and three junior KSSS sailors, Mats Gustafsson on Ansella, PO Andersson's Chazara, the Norwegian boats Aasmund Drolsum and Magic and the finish crew on Tow Fast. In the SRS 1 Alfa class the competition might be between Ralf Ramm-Schmidt's Carabilla III, Ola Johansson's Garbo, Kjell Nilsson's Grand Place and the KSSS sailor Per Lindstedt's La Dolce Vita.
The Eurocard Classic Baltic Race, known as the Antique Round 14 boats are competing, including Fredrick Wallenberg's Refanut, Christer Salen's Ballad, Jacob Wallenberg's Regina and Marie Kraft with her all female crew on S/Y Volonte. This is the first time a female crew will take part in this class.
* H M King Harald f Norway is in the lead of this years Eurocard Gotland Round with his TP 52 Fram XVI, in class ORC International and as he is double scouring he is actually also in the lead of IRC International. In the iRC - class the Norwwegian King is followed by the famous philanthroper and Skype founder Niklas Zennström on his Marten 49 Yani.
A wind change to south west is expeceted for the night which will gain the ones who've already doubbled the Hobourgen Reef.
* Brittmarie, an SK 95 takes Line Honour in 2010 Eurocard Classic Baltic Race. A tight rice with fellow SK95 Kerma who was in the lead just until 10 nautic miles before the Alma when the wind turned dramatically. -- Helene Hernmarck Olsson
A Word with Mr Zak, Owner of Eleonora
When asked about the racing programme and courses arranged by the Royal Yacht Squadron's Race Committee, and Eleonora's results thus far, Mr Zak is full of praise and philosophical about racing without a full sail plan after losing his two top masts last Sunday, saying that the motivation of the crew despite this significant handicap is to be applauded. "It's been tough for us, especially in the light winds but coming in second over the line yesterday is evidence of the special efforts of the crew in conditions favourable to big schooners - but then all the owners are highly motivated to race here in Cowes under any conditions! We are here to sail and we will sail with whatever we have available."
Mr Zak went to praise the team at the Royal Yacht Squadron who have so warmly welcomed all the owners, guests and crews throughout this week. "Given our very difficult situation on Sunday, we have been so impressed and touched by the heartfelt sympathies shown to us by all the staff at the Squadron," said Mr Zak.
"Furthermore, I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Cowes who have welcomed us all and been so very helpful and accommodating. What a charming town and we certainly look forward to returning."

Since then, she has been a regular and successful competitor on the Classic yacht circuit. Brits Turn It On To Take Top Two Spots
The gold and silver fleets were first off the beach in the morning to what looked to be a light air day, but with the building wind and waves, created challenging conditions. The Race Committee on the gold course made the cautious move to shift the course closer to the shore, which actually gave more stable wind and waves to the fleet.
The silver fleet is currently led by Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel of Germany, with the bronze fleet still on the water at press time.
Racing for the finals continues tomorrow with the medal race on Saturday.

2011 Ficker Cup and Congressional Cup
But in 2011 the winner won't have long to wait with the Ficker Cup date being changed to coincide with Congressional Cup. Only one day will now separate the final day of Ficker Cup, March 17-20, and the first day of Congressional Cup, March 21-26.
Additionally, there is the joining together in 2010 of the Chicago Cup, Aug 13-15, the Detroit Cup, Aug. 18-22, and the Knickerbocker Cup, Aug. 25-29, to make the Grade 2 Trifecta series in which the overall winner will be extended an invitation to compete in the 2011 Congressional Cup.
There will now be two ways for skippers to sail their way into the Congressional Cup. On the west coast through the Ficker Cup or on the east coast through the new Trifecta series.
These changes and more are all part of the newly created North American Match Race Series made up of Bayview Yacht Club, Detroit, Mich.; Manhasset Bay Yacht Club, Port Washington, N.Y.; Chicago Match Race Center, Chicago, Ill.; Long Beach Yacht Club, Long Beach, Calif.; San Diego Yacht Club, San Diego, Calif. and St. Francis Yacht Club, San Francisco, Calif.
The Ficker Cup was established by LBYC in 1980 to honor Bill Ficker, world class Star champion in the 50's, winner of the 1970 American's Cup as skipper of the 12-meter class yacht Intrepid and winner of the 1974 Congressional Cup. -- Rich Roberts
