Challenger Playoffs Semi-Final Races Postponed
Iain Murray, ACRM Race Director said, "Whilst there was dramatic action yesterday, well within the wind speed limits, today was a different matter. We have been constantly monitoring conditions on the racecourse during the course of the day and have decided that there will be no racing today as the sea-state and average wind speed measured on the racecourse over the allotted time exceeded 24 knots.
"The forecast for tomorrow is for lighter winds and good conditions and if those forecasts are accurate I am confident we will see more fantastic racing here in Bermuda between the four teams in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs Semi-Finals."
Team New Zealand Would Have Raced Today
Team New Zealand skipper Glenn Ashby says the team would have been both physically and psychologically ready to go racing today had the conditions allowed.
Wild weather conditions in Bermuda forced the postponement of today's racing in the challenger semifinals, handing Team New Zealand an extra 24 hours to get their boat back in shape following yesterday's terrifying capsize.
Ashby said while they wouldn't have been able to get their high-tech catamaran back into its "A1" configuration for today's two scheduled races against Ben Ainslie Racing, they would have been able to get a boat out on the water, following a round-the-clock repair effort from the shore team.
"The guys have obviously had quite a big night getting everything organised for today's racing to be on the water. With the racing today now being cancelled, we'll continue on with little bits and pieces to try and improve the boat to get it back to A1 again for tomorrow's racing," Ashby told the Herald.

Ted Turner Receives New York Yacht Club's Highest Honor

Robert Edward "Ted" Turner III (at right, gripping wheel, surrounded by his crew from the 1979 Fastnet Race, and at right) is a former winner of the America's Cup and a four-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. While his extensive sailing resume played a significant role in his receiving this medal - which has been given out just 17 times previously - it's just one facet of one of the most interesting and successful Americans of modern times. Turner revolutionized television news when he founded the Cable News Network in 1980 and won a World Series as the owner of the Atlanta Braves. He is also the creator of the Goodwill Games, a member of the Television Hall of Fame and a former Time magazine Man of the Year (1991).
"Since 1985, the NYYC Medal has been awarded from time to time at the sole discretion of the Flag Officers in recognition of achievements of particular merit or outstanding contribution to the club or yachting in general," says Philip A. Lotz, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. "Last night, it was my honor and extreme pleasure to present the NYYC Medal to Ted Turner."
While the high point of Turner's sailing career was his win over Alan Bond's Australia in the 1977 America's Cup, he had success before and after, including wins in the Flying Dutchman World Championships, Congressional Cup, 5.5 Metre Gold Cup, SORC and the storm-ravaged 1979 Fastnet Race.
The documentary on Courageous and the 1977 America's Cup will be aired to the public on NBC on Saturday, June 17 at 2:30 p.m. EDT. -- Stuart Streuli

Countdown in Marion... Bermuda's Ready
Marion MA, USA: The clock is counting down to this Friday's Start of the 40th Anniversary Marion Bermuda Race. The 51-boat fleet in the 645nm race from Marion, Massachusetts heading south out of Buzzard's Bay to the finish line of St. David's Lighthouse in Bermuda will arrive in Bermuda just in time for the start of the America's Cup Match.
All entries this year are in the Founders Division. The warning signal is scheduled for June 9, 2017 at 1200 EDT. Classes will start at 15-minute intervals.
Temperature in Marion of Friday will be about 60ºF. In Bermuda next week when they finish it will be close to 80ºF. That's a good reason for sailing south.
The 2017 edition of this classic will see boats ranging from the smallest entry 'Selkie', G.J Bradish's Morris Ocean 32.5 footer from Boston to the largest, the Hinckley SW 59 'Pescatore' sailed by George Tougas of Mattapoisett, MA 'Pescatore' is a Youth Trophy team entry.
Nine of the boats, including 'Selkie' will sail in the Celestial Navigation Division. In its true Corinthian spirit, the Marion Bermuda Race is the only ocean race to Bermuda that offers a celestial navigation prize. The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club hosts the race in Bermuda. It is also home away from home for the America's Cup defenders, the Golden Gate Yacht Club of San Francisco, and their defending team, Oracle Team USA. Actual racing in the America's Cup Match start June 17 on Bermuda's Great Sound, the afternoon of the Marion Bermuda Race prizegiving.
While Marion Bermuda Racers are in Bermuda, the America's Cup Superyacht Regatta runs June 13-15. The J Class Regatta is June 16, 19 & 20. And Red Bull Youth America's Cup races are spread from June 12 to June 20.

Dorade Takes on Asia

In his role as Rear Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, Dorade Captain Matt Brooks, who co-owns the yacht with Pam Rorke Levy has long had ambitions to enter the Rolex China Sea Race, one of the premier ocean races in the RORC line-up. 'We are delighted to usher in a new chapter in Dorade's illustrious history, bringing her to oceans where she has never sailed or raced before," added Brooks. "We are also looking forward to getting to know a new community of sailors, and sharing our experiences bringing a venerable classic yacht back to her intended use. Our hope is that we will inspire the owners of other classic ocean racers to take to the sea again.'"
Since Dorade's launch from the Minneford Yacht Yard in May of 1930 she has ratcheted up an impressive score card; winning more ocean races than any other yacht in history. She won the 1931 Transatlantic Race, which, under Olin's command, won in sixteen days and an hour, beating the next (and much larger) boat by two days, and winning on corrected time by over four days. The win set her name firmly in the annals of yachting history — and changed forever the face of ocean racing yacht design.
In 2015, Dorade completed a four-year campaign retracing the steps of all the major ocean races that the boat had won in the 1930s; in each case beating the boat's original elapsed time performance, and winning the 2013 TransPacific Race overall, 77 years after her first overall win in that race in 1936. Dorade took part in the Rolex Fastnet Race and the Rolex Middle Sea Race in 2015.

Melges 20 World League Goes To Zadar, Croatia
Zadar, Croatia: For the first time ever, the International Melges 20 Class Association (IM20CA) will compete in the Adriatic region, an area fast becoming a premiere location for Melges World League (MWL) events.
Rich in history and millenary tradition, the third European Melges 20 World League regatta will be hosted at Marina Dalmacija, the largest marina in Croatia, located in a naturally protected bay just moments away from the ancient port of Zadar.
In addition to this weekend's forthcoming regatta, the country of Croatia will also host two of the most important events on the 2017 schedule, the European Championship in Sibenik on July 12-15, and the Euros for the Melges 32 on July 20-22, both hosted by D-Marin Mandalina.
Atop the field of nearly 70 teams competing on the 2017 Melges 20 World League Ranking, Russia's Igor Rytov aboard RUSSIAN BOGATYRS has a 29-point advantage over second place Valdimir Prosikhin's NIKA.
Farr 40 Gaeta Open
Gaeta, Italy - Alex Roepers is a two-time world champion in the iconic Farr 40 class. For the New York City-based skipper, the road to capturing a third world crown begins in Gaeta, Italy.
Roepers and his top-notch team on Plenty will make their season debut in the Gaeta Open, being held June 8-10 off the coast of this ancient city. Tactician Terry Hutchinson drilled the crew for several days in advance of the regatta, which features a solid five-boat fleet that includes another past world champion in Enfant Terrible.
Roepers, one of the longest-tenured owners in the class, captured his first Rolex Farr 40 World Championship in 2014 off San Francisco. Plenty was back on top of the pack when it won the 2016 title that was held out of Sydney, Australia.
Now Roepers is seeking to join exclusive company as a three-time champ. Italian legend Vincenzo Onorato is the only owner-driver to capture three straight world championships, doing so from 2006 through 2008 (Newport, Copenhagen, Miami Beach). Boston-based skipper Jim Richardson joined Onorato as a three-time Rolex recipient in 2009 - adding Porto Cervo to the titles he secured in Miami Beach (1998) and San Francisco (2004).
Gaeta, located 75 miles from Rome and 50 miles from Naples, sits on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. This city has played a prominent role in military history as its fortifications date back to Roman times.
"We are thrilled to bring the Farr 40 class to Gaeta, a beautiful place with very reliable winds," said Geoff Stagg, manager of the Farr 40 Class Association.
This regatta is being hosted by the Yacht Club Gaeta and will have John Busch as principal race officer. Busch will set courses on the Gulf of Gaeta, which delivers a consistent afternoon sea breeze that ranges 12 to 18 knots.
