Contributions welcome, send to New High-Performance Yachts For 34th America's Cup In asking US SAILING and the Royal Ocean Racing Club's Seahorse Rating affiliate to write the rules, BMW ORACLE Racing and Golden Gate Yacht Club, winner of the 33rd America's Cup last February, has ensured the process is neutral and independent. "We've always said that the new design will be for the America's Cup community. The result with be a 'non-partisan yacht' rather than a 'defender's yacht'," said Ian Burns, Design Coordinator for BMW ORACLE Racing. "A great deal of input was sought from the America's Cup community and the concept briefs given to the rule writers reflect that feedback." In a twin-track process, US SAILING will author a multihull rule and the RORC's Seahorse Rating a canting-keel monohull rule. "It would be premature to rule either a monohull or multihull in and the other out at this stage," commented Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing. "Which type of boat is best for racing and media impact is one of many evaluations we will be testing over the coming months." The choice between monohull and multihull will be made after the conclusion of these trials, the first round of which is scheduled for Valencia in late July. "Either option will provide high performance, exciting viewing and challenges to design, build and sailing teams," commented Burns. Full article: Full text of the multihull concept: Full text of the monohull concept: Germany Wins The Audi Sardinia Cup Due to an almost total lack of wind off the north east coast of Sardinia no racing took place yesterday and, despite a long wait for the teams on the water, the same was true of today. The overall classification at the conclusion of the event which took place from 28th June to 3rd July has therefore remained unchanged since Thursday 1st July when the fleet had completed 5 windward leewards and a coastal race. Rather less happy with the lack of wind over the past two days were second-placed team Italy 2, composed of the Farr 40 Joe Fly owned by Giovanni Maspero and the Melges 32 B Lin Sailing owned by Luca Lalli. Together with the rest of the fleet they would have liked to have had the chance to regain some ground on Germany. Third place went to team USA made up of Jim Richardson's Farr 40 Barking Mad, and the Melges 32 Bliksem, owned by Pieter Taselaar. Audi Sardinia Cup Overall Team Results: 1. On the final day of Rolex Baltic Week all racing took place on the inner fjord, with perfect Mediterranean sailing conditions. The fleet raced in light 6-9 knot northerlies, with some light patches and 25-degree windshifts to keep the skippers on their toes. The 23 classic beauties had brought a very special atmosphere to the former Olympic marina in Kiel-Duesternbrook, and Sunday made for a fantastic spectacle with all fleets racing in front of the host Kieler Yacht Club. The 8-Metre Euro Cup was decisively won by Jean Fabre from Geneva, Switzerland, owner and skipper of the Modern 8-Metre YQuem II, who scored eight straight wins to secure the victory. YQuem II didn't compete in the single Euro Cup race on the last day, allowing Bernhard Kolbe's Germania III to score a historic win for Germany, 74 years after she raced at the Olympic Games on these very same waters. It went right down to the wire for the 12-Metre class, with Danish Vanity V taking the last day's opening race, which put them on equal points with overnight leader Trivia. Sphinx (both Germany) then won the second, but in the contest for overall victory it was Wilfried Beeck's Trivia who came out on top, managing to finish two places ahead of Vanity in the final race, and discarding a fourth place to claim the trophy with a winning margin of just one point. The Robbe & Berking 6mR Sterling Cup stays in Kiel with Andreas Krause's Sleipnir II. She scored seven wins to take the Cup, including winning the final all German contest. The eighth Rolex Baltic Week will be held from 28 June to 3 July, 2011 on the Flensburg Fjord in Northern Germany opposite the Danish border. Flensburger Segelclub is hosting the event in co-operation with Kieler Yacht Club. Skipper Tiare Tomaszewski, 44, will be joined by her twin sister Leilani and their younger brother Matt, 29, with Kiernan as the navigator, on the 414 nautical mile race that starts from Broken Bay on Saturday, 30 October 2010. "We sailed with our grandfather when we were little kids and have often raced the boat with Ian since he bought it, including racing to Hobart, Lord Howe Island and the Gold Coast, as has Ben, our elder brother," recalled Tiare, a member of the Sydney Amateur Sailing Club. "I sailed with Ian when Maris won her first Lord Howe Island Race but could not compete in last year's race because of work commitments," added Tiare, a film producer. In fact, all four grandchildren are in the media and film production business, which as Tiare says, comes down from the artistic talent of their grandfather. "Veolia Maris is in great shape and we hope that Ian will set us the course of least resistance as he has done so well over the past two Lord Howe races, " she said. "We hope to arrive on the island Melbourne Cup Day in time for the celebrations at the Bowling Club, as we did in 2009, which was also yacht's 50th birthday. Veolia Maris will again be the smallest, oldest and lowest handicapped yacht in the IRC division and, as an always well-sailed boat, she must rank as one of the favourite for handicap honours. "We have also been fortunate in Veolia coming aboard as full sponsors after being a supporter for previous races," Tiare added; The relatively shallow, long keel of the Alan Payne-designed, Jock Muir-built yawl-rigged Tasman Seabird class yacht assured her a place in the fleet this year, but limits on draft and moorings at Lord Howe Island has resulted in a number of deep draft yachts missing out. A total of 15 boats were nominated for the five available positions, with the five accepted being Warwick Sherman's Occasional Coarse Language, Mike Freebairn's Ray White Spirit of Koomooloo, Grant Dawson's Karisma, Anthony Sweetapple's Quetzalcoatl and Paul Clitheroe's Balance. In addition, Sean Langman's maxi yacht Loyal, representing the Huon Yacht Club in southern Tasmania, has been accepted by Gosford Sailing Club as turn-around entry. She is a clear favourite for line honours in the 414 nautical mile race across the Tasman Sea. The Hempel Paints 37th Gosford to Lord Howe Island Race will start from Broken Bay, south of Gosford, at 1.00pm on Saturday, 30 October with the fleet heading north to a turning mark off Terrigal before setting a north-easterly course across the Tasman to Lord Howe Island. -- Peter Campbell The Evolution Of The World Tour Stena Match Cup Sweden is Stage 5, marking the halfway point of the 2010 World Match Racing Tour which originally served as the model for the entire Tour. This friendly and action packed event is annually hosted on the magical island of Marstrand which has developed as a natural metropolis for sailing with yacht racers returning for decades. The Swedish event started back in 1994, gaining World Championship status later in 2007 as part of the WMRT and has now built up to be one of Sweden's largest annual recurring sporting events. Stena Match Cup Sweden is a key event in the evolution of the Tour founded in 2000. Marstrand is accomplished at supporting a number of different yachting disciplines having over the years organized events with; traditional regattas, ocean sailing races, World championships and sailing schools. Last year Marstrand was selected as a pit stop for the Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), one of the most famous and challenging offshore sailing events in the World. After a thrilling finish to leg 8 of the VOR from Galway to Marstrand the teams spent 4 days relaxing before the re-start. 2010 sees the biggest entry ever for Stena Match Cup Sweden with a record overall men's and women's combined entry of 26 skippers. This marks the 16th edition of this Swedish event which is a real favourite amongst the match racing fraternity. The event begins Monday 5 July. On the finish line Klaus Diederichs, sailing NOR272 Fever with Andy Beadsworth and Simon Fry, crossed the line in 14th place just a few inches ahead of Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen, sailing GBR745 Danish Blue with Theis Palm and Andrew Norden, to claim the historic Edinburgh Cup, presented to the Dragon Class for their Open British Championship by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 1949. Poul Richard-Hoj Jensen took second place overall and Olga White completed the podium line-up. Technically six people had the possibility to take third overall going into the final race. Lawrie Smith had held the position over night; White was seven points behind him in fourth, with Simon Brien two points behind her in fifth. Also still just in contention were Gavia Wilkinson-Cox, Mikhail Muratov and Louis Urvois. In the Corinthian Division for the all-amateur crews Ireland's Simon Brien, took overall victory from local Solent sailor Eric Williams, sailing GBR682 Ecstatic with Joanna Richardson and Rory Patten. Cowes Dragon Fleet Captain Richard Cullen, sailing GBR669 Supremacy with Alex Dobson and Matthew Hill, rounded out the Corinthian top three. The South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club, Abersoch, will host the 2011 Dragon Edinburgh Cup, which will be held between 13-16 July 2011. The grand finale happened offshore Markgrafenheide, where the Northern Champion of the Dragon boat class had been determined. The Northern German Championship of the Dragons actually started on Friday, but because of the calm they could only sail races on Sunday. In total, 22 crews were sailing. The big boat sailors could fulfil all their desires on the weekend. Friedrich Hausmann and his "Uijuijuij"-crew were able to get the first place in the ORC I ranking: The team won the "Warnemunde Cup" as well as the "Up & Down" series. "Rund Bornholm", a long-distance offshore race, is going to start tomorrow with 46 participating ships. The starting time in the ranking lists ORC I/II and III is 1 p.m. Ulrich Finckh, Head of the Racing Committee, was very pleased with the first weekend: "The wind came a little slow, but in the end it was all fine. The fantastic conditions on the water will continue", the chief organizer of the sailors from Bavaria promised. The starting line will be spectator and media friendly with the newly instituted country flags on all mainsails as well the ability to quickly identify the top 10 in the 49er World by their sail number 1-10, as well as personal sail numbers which sailors have been allowed to choose for 1 year use. These two editions will make identifying the fleet relatively easier and more exciting. Fresh off their win at the latest World Cup in Kiel, John Pink and Rick Peacock of Great Britain hope to win the European title as well as current World Cup leaders Nico delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch of Austria. French sailors Manu Dyen and Stephane Christidis have two 2010 World Cup titles from Miami and Palma while Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith from Great Britain hold the title from Hyeres. Close to 100 entries have been received including a new to the 49er world entry from Malta. Skipper Benji Borg with crew Sebastian Ripard will represent the island nation training to gain a berth for the 2012 Olympics.
