Audi Sardinia Cup Porto Cervo, 30th June 2010. Day Two of the Audi Sardinia Cup, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda and underway in Porto Cervo from 28th June to 3rd July, saw team Malta move to the top of the overall classification. The team is composed of the Farr 40 Enfant Terrible owned by Alberto Rossi, and the Melges 32 Rush Diletta, owned by Mauro Moccheggiani. With five races won, three points separate the Maltese team from second-placed Italy 2 with the Farr 40 Joe Fly and the Melges 32 B-Lin Sailing. Team Germany - Wolfgang Schaefer's Farr 40 Struntje Light and Jean Francois Cruette's Teasing Machine - had a very good day which brought them up to third place, just one point behind Italy 2. With as many as five races left to run and 13 points separating the top six teams , all is still to play for in the event which will assign the title of ISAF Offshore Team World Champion.

Two windward leeward races were held today on the race course off Porto Cervo. The first, race four of the series, started in 9-10 knots of wind from 345°. The breeze dropped to approximately 5-6 knots for the start of race five while temperatures on the north east coast of Sardinia remain high and are accompanied by sunshine and blue skies.

The team representing Malta rose to the top of the overall classification today thanks mainly to a first and second place gained by the Melges 32 Rush Diletta with former Italian and European 470 champion Matteo Ivaldi aboard. The Farr 40 Enfant Terrible took sixth place in the first race of the day and second in the second.

Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow, Thursday 1st July, at 12 midday. Winds are predicted to remain light, approximately 10 knots from north east.

At the time of distribution of this press releases protests are under discussion.

America's Cup at the White House
Official White House Photo by Samantha Appleton. Click on image to enlarge.

America's Cup at the White House Washington, D.C., USA: The BMW ORACLE Racing team celebrated their historic America's Cup win at the White House with President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

Led by team owner Larry Ellison (USA) and representing San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club, BMW ORACLE Racing won the America's Cup in February - the first time an American team has won the Cup in 18 years.

"We are enormously proud to bring the America's Cup back to the United States after a very long absence," Ellison said. "This team represents what can be achieved when talented people pursue their dreams with a single-minded sense of purpose. The America's Cup is the pinnacle of every sailor's ambition; now that we've won, we will focus equally hard on successfully defending the oldest trophy in international sport."

The America's Cup has been to the White House on one other occasion - President Reagan welcomed skipper Dennis Conner to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue after his American team won the trophy back from Australia in 1987.

The visit to the White House marked the beginning of an East Coast tour for the BMW ORACLE Racing team and the America's Cup.

On Wednesday, the team made an appearance on 'The Early Show' on CBS in New York City, before skipper Jimmy Spithill rang the opening bell of the NASDAQ exchange.

The tour continues on Thursday in Newport, Rhode Island, where the Cup will be on public display and the team will be featured at a Sail Newport luncheon and a special presentation for junior sailors at Fort Adams.

A Spanish Duel Over The Final Miles
Photo by Maria Muina / Vuelta a Espana a Vela. Click on image to enlarge.

Vuelta Espana a Vela Barcelona, Spain: The Vuelta Espana a Vela is building to an exciting finale, winding up a final 50 miles upwind stage tonight to finish off Barcelona, with the Spanish duo Movistar and Estrella Damm evenly matched, challenging for the final honours for Leg 6, the 225 miles last stage from Palma, Mallorca.

At the final turning mark of the entire 1730 miles, six leg course which started in Hondarribia on Saturday 12th June, Spain's double Olympic medalists Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez had built themselves a slender lead which they are trying to protect to the finish, as both teams try to become the first Spanish boat to win a leg of this IMOCA Open 60 round Spain race.

When they turned for home at the Llosa rock mark off Palamos, east of Barcelona, Movistar was just nine minutes and 23 seconds ahead of the Barcelona based Estrella Damm of Pepe Ribes and his Barcelona born and bred co-skipper Alex Pella.

The two Spanish boats already took the top bonus points at the Palamos scoring gate, the first time during this race that neither of the French boats Safran nor PRB have been in the top two at a scoring gate. Overall race leader Safran rounded third at Palamos, securing the 1.5 points that put to make them mathematically unbeatable position for the overall Vuelta Espana a Vela title.

The leg from Palma, which started 1205hrs yesterday has been slow at times, with particular minefields of very calm areas to be avoided.

The two pace-makers Movistar and Estrella Damm have swapped the lead between them, with the Ribes and Pella skippered Estrella Damm taking the lead as the fleet left Dragonera island, to the west of Mallorca, late yesterday evening. Key to their success, so far, was staying to the east, with the offshore option early this morning seemingly yielding more of the SW'ly breeze, and then emerging first into the best of the local Garbi sea breeze in the afternoon

Dragon Edinburgh Cup Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK: The 33 strong fleet at the 2010 Dragon Edinburgh Cup, supported by Aberdeen Asset Management and hosted by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Cowes, put on a fabulous show in stunning conditions as they completed the first two of their six race series for the British Open Dragon Championship. With hot sunshine, a good south westerly breeze of 10-17 knots and what Andrew "Noddy" Norden, bowman for reigning Dragon World Champion Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen, described as "without doubt the strongest Edinburgh Cup fleet I've ever seen", it was unquestionably some of the best racing the Solent has witnessed in a long time.

In the Corinthian Division for the all-amateur crews the Solent's Eric Williams, sailing GBR682 Ecstatic with Rory Paton and Joanna Richardson, is leading overall from Solent Fleet Captain Richard Cullen aboard GBR669 Supremacy, crewed by Alex Dobson and Matthew Hill, with Falmouth's Chris Hunt, crewed by Mark Dailey and Simon James sailing GBR741 Flawless, third.

One team who's day looked pretty good until they got ashore and checked the results was that of French National Champion Louis Urvois, sailing FRA365 Ar Prim with Gwen Chapalain and Jean S Ponce.

With the forecast offering more sunshine and good winds, this time from the south, we look all set for another great day of racing tomorrow. The regatta continues until Saturday with a total of six races scheduled. In addition Friday afternoon will see the lunatics taking over the asylum in the Edinburgh Cup Crews Race, a traditional highlight of the regatta.

Overall Top Five After Two Races

Brest Classic Week
City of sailors and offshore racing, with its bay opening onto the Iroise Sea, Brest holds the advantage of privileged surroundings and a perfect setting devoted to boating.Against this backdrop, the Port du Chateau marina, located both in the heart of town and facing the open sea, is the perfect place to host the first Brest Classic Week event, from the 5th to 10th of July.

This is the first event of its kind in Brest, specifically reserved for classic yachts. It will welcome forty superb, history-laden boats for a full week of racing, regattas and festivities. Though intended as an up-market event in the pure style of yacht gatherings in the English-speaking world, this exceptional instant is also, obviously, intended for all the people of Brest and Finistere County. Each day, events and concerts will provide moments of great conviviality for the crews as well as the general public. They will be organised in the Brest Classic Week Village.

This week of traditional sail is also designed to fit into the classic yachting and racing circuit, falling between the meetings in Benodet in late June and Cowes Week in late July. And the desire has already been clearly and strongly expressed for this to become a regular event held every two years.

This first edition of Brest Classic Week will be a popular, lively and open event where competitors, owners, partners and the public can all rub shoulders. Everyone will be welcomed in a perfectly adapted setting: the Port du Chateau marina in the heart of town, where a village covering about 500 m2 will hold the organisation area and exhibitors' stands.

Perth International Regatta
With the official opening of entries to the Perth International Regatta (the test event to the ISAF Sailing World Championships, to be held between 16-21 November 2010), Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley advises sailors to register early to avoid disappointment.

"I encourage sailors who have an aim of securing one of the 380 places available at the London 2012 Olympic Games Sailing Regatta to complete the online entry for the Perth International Regatta soon," Mr Longley said.

"Athletes who compete in November this year will 'get a feel' for the weather conditions that are likely to ensue in December next year for the Sailing World Championships," he said.

He said the urgency was due to the fact that places were limited and on a 'first in, first served basis'. Further, he added that Perth 2011 had "already received interest from 14 countries wishing to enter teams" and that "about half the number of athletes and boats that would travel to Perth for the Sailing World Championships would be in Western Australia for this year's event".

Skandia Team GBR hasn't wasted any time with most of their performance team already entered to ensure they don't miss the invaluable opportunity the Perth International Regatta presents.
