Two windward leeward races were held today on the race course off Porto Cervo. The first, race four of the series, started in 9-10 knots of wind from 345°. The breeze dropped to approximately 5-6 knots for the start of race five while temperatures on the north east coast of Sardinia remain high and are accompanied by sunshine and blue skies. The team representing Malta rose to the top of the overall classification today thanks mainly to a first and second place gained by the Melges 32 Rush Diletta with former Italian and European 470 champion Matteo Ivaldi aboard. The Farr 40 Enfant Terrible took sixth place in the first race of the day and second in the second. Racing is scheduled to continue tomorrow, Thursday 1st July, at 12 midday. Winds are predicted to remain light, approximately 10 knots from north east. At the time of distribution of this press releases protests are under discussion. Led by team owner Larry Ellison (USA) and representing San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club, BMW ORACLE Racing won the America's Cup in February - the first time an American team has won the Cup in 18 years. "We are enormously proud to bring the America's Cup back to the United States after a very long absence," Ellison said. "This team represents what can be achieved when talented people pursue their dreams with a single-minded sense of purpose. The America's Cup is the pinnacle of every sailor's ambition; now that we've won, we will focus equally hard on successfully defending the oldest trophy in international sport." The America's Cup has been to the White House on one other occasion - President Reagan welcomed skipper Dennis Conner to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue after his American team won the trophy back from Australia in 1987. The visit to the White House marked the beginning of an East Coast tour for the BMW ORACLE Racing team and the America's Cup. On Wednesday, the team made an appearance on 'The Early Show' on CBS in New York City, before skipper Jimmy Spithill rang the opening bell of the NASDAQ exchange. The tour continues on Thursday in Newport, Rhode Island, where the Cup will be on public display and the team will be featured at a Sail Newport luncheon and a special presentation for junior sailors at Fort Adams. A Spanish Duel Over The Final Miles
At the final turning mark of the entire 1730 miles, six leg course which started in Hondarribia on Saturday 12th June, Spain's double Olympic medalists Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez had built themselves a slender lead which they are trying to protect to the finish, as both teams try to become the first Spanish boat to win a leg of this IMOCA Open 60 round Spain race. When they turned for home at the Llosa rock mark off Palamos, east of Barcelona, Movistar was just nine minutes and 23 seconds ahead of the Barcelona based Estrella Damm of Pepe Ribes and his Barcelona born and bred co-skipper Alex Pella. The two Spanish boats already took the top bonus points at the Palamos scoring gate, the first time during this race that neither of the French boats Safran nor PRB have been in the top two at a scoring gate. Overall race leader Safran rounded third at Palamos, securing the 1.5 points that put to make them mathematically unbeatable position for the overall Vuelta Espana a Vela title. The leg from Palma, which started 1205hrs yesterday has been slow at times, with particular minefields of very calm areas to be avoided. The two pace-makers Movistar and Estrella Damm have swapped the lead between them, with the Ribes and Pella skippered Estrella Damm taking the lead as the fleet left Dragonera island, to the west of Mallorca, late yesterday evening. Key to their success, so far, was staying to the east, with the offshore option early this morning seemingly yielding more of the SW'ly breeze, and then emerging first into the best of the local Garbi sea breeze in the afternoon Roundings at Palamos by 1700hrs local 1. The British squad is the largest country represented with 23 teams followed by the host nation Spain with 16. With the 29er named as the ISAF Youth World open boat for the ISAF Youth Worlds, many youth teams are in attendance to practice their skills including teams from outside Europe including the New Zealand team of Alexandra Malone and Sam Bullock and the United States with 5 teams including their ISAF Youth World representatives. In the Corinthian Division for the all-amateur crews the Solent's Eric Williams, sailing GBR682 Ecstatic with Rory Paton and Joanna Richardson, is leading overall from Solent Fleet Captain Richard Cullen aboard GBR669 Supremacy, crewed by Alex Dobson and Matthew Hill, with Falmouth's Chris Hunt, crewed by Mark Dailey and Simon James sailing GBR741 Flawless, third. One team who's day looked pretty good until they got ashore and checked the results was that of French National Champion Louis Urvois, sailing FRA365 Ar Prim with Gwen Chapalain and Jean S Ponce. With the forecast offering more sunshine and good winds, this time from the south, we look all set for another great day of racing tomorrow. The regatta continues until Saturday with a total of six races scheduled. In addition Friday afternoon will see the lunatics taking over the asylum in the Edinburgh Cup Crews Race, a traditional highlight of the regatta. Overall Top Five After Two Races 1. It will welcome forty superb, history-laden boats for a full week of racing, regattas and festivities. Major Cruising Rally Organisers To Join Forces Cruising Rally Association has organised ocean sailing rallies and seminars for 21 years under the leadership of President and Founder Steve Black.
