Contributions welcome, send to ISAF Offshore Team World Championship - Audi Sardinia Cup The three windward leeward races held off Porto Cervo today were sailed in approximately 10 to 12 knots of north north-easterly breeze which lightened and became fairly shifty during the last race of the day. The first race of the series started on scheduled at 12.05 in approximately 10 to 11 knots of breeze from 335° with clear blue skies and soaring temperatures which topped 30°C. Provisional Overall Team Results after Day One 1. Italy 2 : Farr 40 Joe Fly (1,5,3=9); Melges 32 B-Lin (1,1,7=9): 18 total points Bertrand Pace At The Helm
Bertrand Pace and his crew can drink to their victory. They are really strong! They took the lead of the race in front of Dunkerque and won a tricky 25-miles race. Second, Ile-de-France 2010, with Jimmy Pahun at the helm. Vincent Aillaud, Jean-François Cuzon, Jean-Pierre Nicol and co. did well, finishing second behind Nouvelle-Caledonie. Toulon-Provence-Mediterranee - COYCH is third, and third of the overall ranking too. First amateur and fourth overall during this offshore leg, Ville de Geneve - Carrefour Prevention. Team SOG - Safran is the first student and finished the leg in sixth position. Tonight, the students are still second overall! Another surprise: several boats went aground on a sandbar few minutes after the start, including Oman Sail's Renaissance. This international team took the best start but hit the sand and stopped. The boat was last at the mark but succeeded to reach the tenth place in Calais. Normale Sup - Lagardere's students had a more serious issue : they gave up after breaking the forestay. They are now doing their best to repair and start again tomorrow. And Supelec is DNF on this leg for crossing the finish line too late. Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race Yogo Racing Izara skippered by Oli Young and Sam Goodchild led Thunder II (John Fowler & Warwick Samuel) and then Taika (Kim Vasey & Chris Tibbs) over the line in a period of just over six minutes. This put Taika at the top of the IRC leaderboard. This was only to last a few minutes as The Shed skippered by Phil Stubs and Pip Hare, crossed the line just over four minutes later, to snatch not only the Class Three win out of the hands of Chris Tibbs and Kim Vasey, but the overall lead in IRC. Rafiki skippered by Ebe Docter and Rein Amels followed shortly afterwards. There was nearly a half hour break before three more yachts were to cross the line within a minute and a half of each other. Fastrak VII (Nigel Colley & David Bowdler) was fifty three seconds ahead of Allez Van Hee (Tony Van Hee & Bob Beggs), who were forty four seconds ahead of Greyhound (Gerard Schalkwijk & Laura Engel). Another break followed before Jangada Too (Richard Palmer & Trevor Drew) crossed the line just under half an hour later. Twenty minutes later JBellino (Rob Craigie & Charles Allen) crossed the line to the largest cheer of the afternoon, showing the huge affection and respect that Rob and Charles are held in. And that isn't it for the day. With Comedy of Errors closing on the Western Entrance of Plymouth Sound there will be more finishers today, bringing to close a day that will have seen nearly twenty percent of the entire race finish within 90 minutes of each other and nearly a third of the fleet finish in one day. * The Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race continues to be full of drama, even in these incredibly light winds, right to the end. QII, BlueQube and Elixir have been locked together across Lyme Bay, around Start Point and in the approaches to Plymouth. QII opted to split from the other two and lost the wind. Elixir and BluQube traded tacks up Plymouth Sound and then both lost the wind as they cross the main ship channel. Timing being all important this was as HMS Cornwall was coming around Drake's Island. The police RIB spoke to both yachts and then the Race Officials watch with gratitude as HMS Cornwall diverted her course to pass close behind both yachts. BluQube and Elixir hoisted their spinnakers and as both tried to point high enough to clear the moorings, Elixir was able to gybe earlier. BluQube played the angles accelerating after Elixir, but Elixir (skippered by Flic Gabbay and Roger Barber) piped BluQube (skippered by Katie Miller and Matt Lingley) to the line by 18 seconds in drifting conditions. -- James Bembridge Three Boats Finish Jester Atlantic Challenge Just two and a half hours later the event's only multihull - Rory McDougall's 21-foot Wharram Tiki, Cooking Fat - also finished the challenge, which left Plymouth on May 23. Roger Fitzgerald on Ella Trout III, a Dehler 29, became the third finisher on Sunday evening. The Jester Challenge is a solo, Atlantic non-race for boats under 30-feet, that has seen 12 of the 24 starters retire, including Andy Lane's 21-foot Archambault Coco, Amadeus, which sank. Fitzgerald almost joined the list in the closing stages when he ran aground on his approach to Newport. Jourdain Joins Extreme Sailing Series At Cowes Week Swapping long-haul ocean racing for the short racecourses the circuit has become renowned for will certainly challenge the skipper from Quimper, France, who for the past 15 years has been focussing on long-course monohull racing since being crowned Formula 40 World Champion in 1989. Jourdain commented, "Our participation in Cowes Week in August is an excellent occasion for us to be up against the big champions from all countries. I hardly sailed multihulls for the past ten years so it will be a tough task, but it will be a pleasure to be on the Formula 40s of the third millennium." Joining Jourdain will be experienced Extreme 40 sailor Jean-Christophe Mourniac, former French National Match Racing Champion Philippe Legros and America's Cup veteran and experienced match racer, Christophe André, who raced in 2009 in both the Kiel and Amsterdam Extreme 40 events with LUNA. Jourdain will be up against some of the biggest names in multihull sailing. Three French compatriots will be on the start line on 31 July. Loïck Peyron, helming defending Champions Oman Sail Masirah, Franck Cammas, onboard Groupama 40 and Yann Guichard, winner of the first event in Sete at the end of May 2010 with Groupe Edmond de Rothschild. The nine-strong line up will include Jourdain's old sparring rival Mike Golding, another veteran Vendee Globe skipper, with Ecover Sailing Team and double Olympic Gold Medallist Roman Hagara onboard Red Bull extreme Sailing. www.extremesailingserieseurope.com Etchells Open Day The Etchells fleet in Cowes and Hamble are inviting sailors to come and try a sail on the 30 foot keel boat on Saturday 3rd July. Show boats will be alongside at the Royal Southern Yacht Club Hamble and Cowes (location to be advised) with class members available to discuss why an Etchells. On the day the class association will also have Etchells sailing in the Solent with Rib Transfer's to the boats so that prospective new owners or crew can sail one. Experienced or novice sailors are all invited to view the boat. Those wishing to sail ideally should advise the organisers first of their time slots and make sure they bring their sailing wet weather gear. Saturday 3rd July between 0930 and 1600 is the opportunity to sail with some experienced owners and to meet some fleet members. Transforming the video output in a way that excites and engages the biggest ever audience is a primary goal for the 34TH America's Cup. Fresh thinking for video production is being sought from Generation Y. The America's Cup Video Production Competition is open to anyone so long as they're less than 28 years of age. All that is required is a clip of any length that illustrates production techniques and exciting, new perspectives that could boost coverage of the 34TH America's Cup. The 28-year age limit is in place with a view to blending new talent with the best and most-experienced specialists in sports broadcasting. A panel of extreme sports and social media leaders will review the videos. Designed to help them win major offshore solo and short-handed races in the future, the ultimate goal is to put a British sailor in a strong position to win the Vendée Globe in 2016 or 2020. The Artemis Offshore Academy will provide a structure that can help all whose potential is yet to be fully realised. The newly launched Academy will operate from a variety of bases to maximize the effectiveness of the training in British waters during the summer, including extensive use of the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, The Solent and in the South of France, La Grande Motte, already an established French Figaro school during the winter.
