Esimit Europa 2 completed the course in just 23 hours 09 seconds, 5 hours 6 seconds outside the course record. Neville Crichton, former owner of Esimit Europa 2, came in second at 12h15m19s CEST with Shockwave. The mini-maxi rounded the Giraglia Rock three hours behind Esimit Europa 2. The countdown clock is now running for the overall corrected-time victory. *By sunset, which left the sea off San Remo in a smooth golden light, only 8 boats had crossed the finish line on the second day of the Giraglia Rolex Cup offshore race. The 12 to 15 knots breeze, that has accompanied the bigger yachts under blue sky the last few hours toward to coast, slowly fell asleep with the day's end. At the same time, the Giraglia Rock checkpoint reported a large quantity of boats rounding the small islet off the northern tip of Corsica. Flavio Favini, the skipper of Esimit Europa, which secured line honours this morning, gave an insight to his experience: "this race was very promising in the beginning for the first ride to the Giraglia, but a couple of problems on the beat to La Fourmigue, we broke the tack of the headsail. The headsail came off and it was quite difficult to recover because we had come back, but the boat is very fast and we had a very nice ride to the Giraglia, but when we were at the Giraglia Rock the wind dropped off. During the night the wind was very light and shifty, so it has been quite difficult to get from the Giraglia rock to San Remo, but anyway, for us it is the first long race with this boat, we have learned a lot of things and we still have a lot of things to learn about the boat, about how to sail to get a 100 % out of it. We have a very good team and everybody is eager to learn." Most of the 220 participating yachts are still on sea, every boat and crew with their own story, with their own goal and passion. Out on the Rade Nord, a switch from yesterday's southern arena, the breeze was equally hard to read and several teams results roller-coastered from one race to the next. Quantum Racing's (USA) fifth and sixth keeps them ahead of Matador (ARG) only on tie-break as the Argentine TP52 had a taste of life at the both extremes. The leader board after five races is incredibly close. Only five points separate the top five boats. Quantum Racing are credited with the lead by virtue of their two victories yesterday, and TeamOrigin are only one point behind. Quantum's starting has been excellent. They had to dig deep and fight back when they fouled Bribon at the leeward gate of the second race, an incident which skipper-helm Terry Hutchinson (USA) put down to a momentary 'brain fade' But the coastal race's 1.5 points bounty on tomorrow could prove decisive in this regatta and Quantum Racing go into it perhaps with an edge of confidence after winning the longer race here last year. The Green Fear is back But the fear is back. The light 6-9 knot and conditions of today suited the narrower 2007 and 2008 Botin & Carkeek designs compared to those of last year, and Iberdrola is the fastest and best-sailed of them all, putting two convincing wins on the scoreboard today to take a 4-point lead in the GP42 Series over current runner-up Peninsula Petroleum (GBR). This is only the second appearance of this Gibraltar-based team in the Audi MedCup, and already they are showing much-improved performance over their results from Cascais. AIRISESSENTIAL (ITA) also showed great promise today, recovering from a bag caught on their rudder in the first race to grab and maintain a second place in the second race. This 2008 Felci design has also proven fast in light air, and is under the helm of owner Roberto Monti (ITA). This regatta may very well come down to weather: if the light conditions persist, Iberdrola will be the boat to beat. But if the breeze comes up, watch out: the Madrid Caser Seguros (ESP) and Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) teams will come roaring back. Marseille Trophy TP52 Series GP42 Series J. P. Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Race Answer: It was Brian Haynes' Farrier F-33R Carbon Tiger II that did just that back in the June 2004 race, whilst also taking line honours in Class A Multihulls, and winning on handicap. There were 1,682 boats taking part that year, including 50 or so multihulls. She went on to finish the 55-mile course rounding in 4hrs 52min being 4th over the line on the water, beaten only by three Grand Prix Class multihulls. The F-33 cruiser was faster than all the big monos, except one Open 60, and around two hours ahead of the first mono sport boat. On handicap, Carbon Tiger II took 1st place in Class A Multihulls and 2nd place overall behind 'IDEC'. Well, she's back on the start line again in 2010 with Brian Haynes, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, still in charge and still looking for that class win. The aptly named 35ft A Day at the Races was designed by Peter Nicholson as a One Off for Sir Robin Aisher to allow him to compete under the old One Ton Rule. Built in 1966 by Camper & Nicholson, the boat's original name was 'Yeoman XIV'. She's been owned and skippered by Barrie J. Martin from London since 2001. Two more Extreme 40s have entered the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, bringing the total entered to four. Joining Mike Golding aboard Ecover Extreme 40, and Team Metherell are Oman Sail, Masirah, skippered by Pete Cummings - this boat took Line Honours last year. Also competing is Oman Sail, The Wave, Muscat, skippered by Paul Campbell-James. * And then there were five...Team GAC Pindar's Extreme 40, will join a total of 1,754 entries in this weekend's J.P.Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, which begins in Cowes, on Saturday, June 19. Team GAC Pindar skipper, Nick Moloney, who boasts a rich and successful sailing career, including two America's Cup campaigns and 12 individual World Sailing Speed Records, has competed in the race three times before. * Raymarine's new format weather briefing for this year's JP Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Race is now fully underway. The Raymarine website now features video updates giving advice and useful tips to those taking part in the race, including latest information on tide times and the new exclusion zone for this year's race. New Raymarine Meteorologist Libby Greenhalgh also caught up with Double Olympic Gold Medallist Shirley Robertson, to find out what keeps bringer her back to the RTIR and to ask for a couple of useful tips that may help both first time racers and seasoned professionals. As an added extra this year, sailing enthusiasts can submit questions they would like Libby to answer at the Raymarine Weather Briefing via the website, giving them added benefits and tips for race day. The race begins at 5am, from the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, after which the fleet will race westabout to The Needles, around St Catherine's Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy and back into the Solent, to the finish line in Cowes. Tread Safely At Night..... Safety Tread conforms to ISO 15370 for low location emergency lighting and charges with just 8 hours of daylight, to achieve a 20+ hour glow. Other applications for the luminous material include marking of river posts and lettering for dock reference or signage for fuel berths. In addition, the strips of luminous tread can be used to mark the inside of a berth or dock to make the pontoon more visible at night. The tread is designed to glow in the dark as guidelines for walkways, ensuring safe passage at night, even on an unlit pontoon or deck. Qingdao Match Cup Added to 2010 World Match Racing Tour Qingdao Match Cup will be utilising 10 brand new Beneteau First 40 yachts to be delivered in mid July and the event will have as the new standard a total prize pool of USD$500,000. Racing will take place between the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre and the new city area that will host tens of thousands of spectators on a daily basis. Qingdao is now the foremost location for sailing in China since hosting the sailing events for the 2008 Olympic Games. Being appointed as a World Match Racing Tour venue is yet another important milestone in the development of Qingdao's marine industry. With the addition of Qingdao, the World Match Racing Tour will maintain the 10 venue format as proposed earlier in the year. As recently announced the local authority in Vietnam has decided to upgrade the Vietnam Match Cup to an event of national status. Due to this modification the Vietnam Match Cup has been postponed until the 2011 Tour year. In the final stretch of the course PRB chose to sail further away from the coast, with W Hotels-Nova Bocana and Estrella Damm making the most of the situation to dangerously reduce the gap. GAES Centros Auditivos benefited from Movistar's problems to move up into a fifth place finish. Central Lechera Asturiana with Juan Merediz and Fran Palacio couldn't do much to improve on their seventh place in both the first and second legs of the Tour. Their yacht, which is slower than the more modern designs wasn't helped by the wind, with few tactical options open to the crew. And so the rankings have undergone a shake-up. None of the four top entries which left Gijon held the same position after calculating the points for the scoring gate and the thrid leg. Safran and PRB have switched places, as have W Hoteles-Nova Bocana and Movistar, with Estrella Damm holding fifth. The three top Spanish entries are now bunched within a points margin of just three and a half points, which means that the next legs will be even more competitive Third leg results, Gijon-Sanxenxo, 220 miles 1. The Newport Bermuda Race is dual scored in the Gibbs Hill and St. David's Divisions under ORR and IRC systems. The North Rock Beacon Trophy was designed and crafted by Bermuda artisan, Bill Wivel, at Walker Christopher. It was awarded for the first time in 2008 to Sinn Fein for finishing first on corrected time in the combined fleet. Sinn Fein has won two St. David's Lighthouse trophies in a row for first place in the amateur St. David's Lighthouse Division under ORR scoring. The Beneteau First 36.7 Tennacious won the professional Gibbs Hill Lighthouse Division under ORR scoring in 2008. The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club introduced the new major trophy for the 2008 Newport Bermuda Race. The Newport Bermuda Race starts June 18, 2010 and the Cruising Club of America and the RBYC, co-organizers of the biennial event since 1926, are expecting 183 entries on the line this Friday. In the 2010 race, all boats must have a 'fully measured" ORR (Offshore Rating Rule) certificate and meet the requirements for the race based on the ORR rule. Boats may also choose to race under IRC. IRC scoring is only for the two Lighthouse Divisions to accommodate the Onion Patch Series that is scored under that system. -- Talbot Wilson * If the fleet holds steady at 188 boats, this will be the third largest race in the 104-year, 46-race history of the 'Thrash to the Onion Patch', after the 265-boat turnout in 2006 and 198 in 2008. The only other time there were more than 180 entries was 2002. That turned out to be one of the wildest races in the history of the event, when another long finger of favorable current kicked up a brutal sea and pushed Roy Disney's Pyewacket to an elapsed time record for traditional fixed-keel boats of 53 hours, 29 minutes. The 'Open' record is held by Hasso Plattner's 86 foot open yacht, Morning Glory set in 2004 with a time of 48 hours 28 minutes 31 secs - an average of 13.1knots. If the wind comes right, this year's race could again be one for the big boats. The 99-foot Speedboat or 90-foot Rambler could have a shot at a new course record. Behind them will be a pack of 60-70-footers like Bella Mente, which cleaned up at the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta last weekend. Another to watch is the English yacht Ran, which won both the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race and Rolex Sydney-Hobart classics. Also in this group is Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy's Noonmark VI, on an extended circumnavigation to compete in the world's major races. A sentimental favorite is Zwerver, a 56-foot wooden sloop with an eight-foot tiller that Olin Stephens (a member of the Bermuda Race Role of Honour) designed for a Dutch sailor in the 1950s. -- John Rousmaniere Navimo Recalls XM Far Eastern Built Liferafts Navimo UK is recalling a batch of Far Eastern manufactured XM-branded liferafts that showed the potential for developing micro-leaks that might affect the overall buoyancy of the product. After a prolonged time in the water, says Navimo, the occupants of the liferaft might have to use the pump supplied in the raft to top it up. The problem is confined to a limited batch of XM liferafts manufactured in the Far East carrying part numbers 53871 to 53876. This batch of rafts was manufactured from early 2006 onwards and were probably sold after June 2006. 'While we've had no reports of any incidents with this batch of rafts, we take this matter extremely seriously,' said Paul White, Navimo UK sales manager. 'We just don't feel comfortable offering a safety product that - no matter how small the possibility - might put anyone at risk. 'So we want to get that entire batch of rafts back and replace them - free of charge - by the same type of product manufactured in our European factories.' Navimo says any company with a raft - or rafts - from the affected batch should contact Carl Gilbert-Wood on 01489 778853, or email to arrange for shipment back to Navimo. Any company having sold a raft from the affected batch should also contact Mr Gilbert-Wood to help trace the buyer and arrange the replacement raft.
