The winner of the day is Team Aqua, unbeaten after six matches and sailing very consistently throughout the day. Cameron Appleton's day started with a tough match against the America's Cup winner James Spithill, sailing on a boat called 17. There was no such thing as an observation round: the pre-start was very intense, and led to a premature start by Spithill that allowed Team Aqua to win a fairly easy point. The team from the UAE then aligned the victories with great confidence, finishing the day unbeaten and without being seriously threatened. The Slovenian team Ceeref, with Rod Davis at the helm, also had a smooth ride, winning its first four matches of the day and only losing to James Spithill's 17 in the last flight of the day. Five teams are on a tie in third: Team Sea Dubai, No Way Back, Artemis, BMW ORACLE Racing and 17. The weather was fine all day, with the wind blowing up to 18 knots in the middle of the afternoon. The weather forecast for the coming days is variable, with some rain forecast tomorrow and a slight improvement in the coming days. As for the wind, it is usually not an issue here. Not surprising in a country that produces 20% of its energy through windmills! Match-race, provisional results after seven flights: 1. Team Aqua (Cameron Appleton), 6/0 - 6 points Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta Starts Wednesday Racing is scheduled to begin at 12 midday with the fleet, divided into Cruising and Performance divisions, following coastal courses along the rocky coastline of the Costa Smeralda and through the La Maddalena archipelago where islands and rocks will act as natural buoys and marks. The Race Committee will be able to choose daily from a variety of courses based on the wind and sea conditions on what is recognized as one of the world's most challenging and visually striking regatta courses. Dotted around the fleet are a host of top racing stars, Olympic medallists, America's Cup skippers and round-the-world race veterans such as Peter Holmberg, Karol Jablonski, Tommaso Chieffi and Neal MacDonald. Daryl Wislang, the bowman on Highland Fling, has just completed a high-speed transatlantic crossing aboard Leopard 3 and made it to Porto Cervo in the nick of time. A newcomer to the event this year is Perini Navi's 38 metre racing sloop P2, helmed by America's Cup winner Peter Holmberg, she will be making her regatta debut in the Mediterranean at the superyacht event. She will be joined by the Royal Huisman built Gliss, winner of the 2009 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, and Saudade - the largest yacht in the fleet measuring 45.2 metres (147 feet) as well as the Southern Wind yacht Thalima, one of the newest yachts in the fleet, launched in January of this year. The forecast calls for south-easterly winds of 16 to 18 knots accompanied by sunshine and blue skies. www.yccs.it Shetland Round Britain & Ireland 2010 Dutch yachtsman Nico Budel sailed in the single-handed division during the 2008-09 Portimao Global Ocean Race and will be sailing double-handed in the Global Ocean Race: for the SRBIR, Budel is teamed with Jules Banffer onboard Sec Hayai, ex-Beluga Racer from the Portimao Global Ocean Race. Meanwhile, UK-based, Italian yachtsman Marco Nannini has paired with Mini Transat sailor Paul Peggs for the SRBIR onboard SunGard Front Arena, ex-Team Mowgli from the Portimao Global Ocean race. The first leg of the SRBIR was from Plymouth, leaving the Isles of Scilly to starboard and across the Celtic Sea to Kinsale, just south of Cork, Ireland. After one day and six hours at sea, just 26 minutes separated the first three Class40s with exceptionally close racing between the South African duo of Nick Leggatt and Philippa Hutton-Squire on Phesheya Racing, Nannini and Pegs on SunGard Front Arena and the Norwegian team of Rune Aasberg and Arlid Schei on Solo. Gilmour Wins Pro-Am Korea Match Cup Race The VIPs were teamed to race with Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing winner of the 2010 WMRT Stage 2, Paolo Cian (ITA) Team Italia who won last year's Korea Match Cup, Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing who has been part of the global Tour since 2000 and Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar, twice ISAF Match Racing World Champion. Eun Chan Lee, Director, R&D General Affairs Group HYUNDAI-KIA MOTORS, was extremely pleased with his on the water experience today, after winning the overall Pro-Am. He said, "I crewed for Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing who has won four World Championships. It was interesting to see the America's Cup helms up close in action and understand what it takes to win a race in this professional sailing series". After registration and weigh in, the 12 Korea Match Cup teams hit the water for their allotted training sessions in the tidal waters of South Korea. Amongst the entries this year is Phil Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing, winner of the recent Korea Match Cup Qualifier, which secured his wild card entry to Stage 3. Stage 3 of the Tour also parallels with the start of Korea's largest marine industry event, the '3rd Korea International Boat Show'. Interesting because there has been a build-up of numerous ORC local and regional regattas throughout Italy, on both the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic sides of the peninsula, with winners using these events to train for this "main event." Among the favorites is Alvarosky, a Grand Soleil 40 RC owned by Francesco Siculiana of Palermo, who is fresh off his victory in the ORC Tyrrhenian Sea National Championship. Other favorites include Richard Vojta's GS42 Bohemian Express, a perennial winner in many Adriatic regattas, and the new Comet 50 Verve owned by Biscardi/ Chiusano and helmed by Lorenzo Bodini with Francesco de Angelis as tactician. As specified by the ORC's "Green Book" guide of championship event standards, the regatta will include seven inshore and two offshore races. Inshore races will be over windward-leeward courses, and offshore race courses and lengths will be determined by the LNI Cagliari Race Committee based on local conditions. This will likely be the largest ORCi event in the Mediterranean basin, promising to attract dozens of entries from throughout the region. The fleet will be divided into two divisions: Division A for boats with GPH ratings of 400 to 599.9 sec/mi, and Division B for boats from 600 to 665 sec/mi, though this split may change once the final entry list is compiled for the event. In addition to issuing awards to the first three places in each Division in the fleet, and prizes given to individual race winners in each Division, there will be an overall ORC Prize awarded to the top owner-driver in each Division. www.orceuropeans2010.com Yacht Broker Required Fog Played The Sailors at Laser Euros In Laser Standard, the Rutger Schaardenburg was once again the flying Dutchman in the first race of the day, securing his third victory at the Europeans. In the fourth race, however, wind and luck both turned their back on him and he finished 26. "I like the sailing conditions in Tallinn, the wind is very shifty from the shore and you have to monitor it all the time - I like this kind of sailing. I have prepared hard, have also been in Tallinn earlier for a training week and I am just going into racing with all the confidence. There are six more races coming up and I am going to try to win them all," he said. Top three Laser Standard after four races 1. Rutger Schaardenburg, NED, 3 points In Laser Radial, Croatian Tina Mihelic again outpowered her competition, finishing the races as first and second. In total, she is now leading Maiken Schutt from Denmark by less than double the points. "Racing in Pirita is good - we have various conditions here. The first sailing day of l'Hydroptere in Great-Britain was supposed to be very quiet. The weather report indicated a light wind that would strengthen a little bit at the end of the day. But this is at over 30 knots of average speed that Alain Thebault and his flying acrobats sailed in the bay of Cowes this afternoon. The wind and the sunny weather offered Alain Thebault and his crew members optimal sailing conditions. Thus they could tack along the Isle of Wight and offer a quality show to the numerous sailing boats around her. The top speed recorded today was at 34.77 knots and the trimaran crew is optimistic about new speed performance as the wind should strengthen at the end of the week.
