Match races over the next three days in Version 5 America's Cup boats off the Sardinian island of La Maddalena will determine the outcome of the two-week series. Tomorrow, Artemis will meet Team New Zealand and All4One will race SYNERGY. One quarter-final was decided today. Fifth-placed SYNERGY defeated fourth-placed Mascalzone Latino two races to one. The only races sailed in the shifty northwest breeze were the last two of the round robin and those of the single quarter-final. The remaining three boats went through to the semi-finals based on their performances in the round robin. All4One, in fourth place on Tuesday, won the round robin today, after defeating Sweden's Artemis which had led on points throughout the week. The Swedish boat finished the round second. Emirates Team New Zealand finished the round third after defeating Mascalzone Latino today. All4One, a new team this season, finished the round with a 6-3 record, winning their last four races, handing defeats to top-seeds Artemis and Emirates Team New Zealand in the process. All4One, 6-3, 6 points * Penalties deducted by Jury/Umpires Quarter-finals Provisional Results Michel Desjoyeaux Picks Francois Gabart for Barcelona World Race "When I learnt that Michel was preparing for a new Imoca project and having a brand new boat built for the Route du Rhum and then the Barcelona World Race, I got in touch straightaway. Barely an hour after his press conference in Paris (21st January 2010), I sent him a message. I said to him: if you're looking for someone for next winter, I'm up for it. He took note. However, I wasn't the only one to put myself forward" says Francois, who learnt the good news on 18th May 2010. "Opting for Francois was practically a done deal in my head since February, but I was concentrating on the construction of the boat and I wanted the project to mature. I discussed it with Christian Le Pape, our coach from Port-La-Foret and together we concluded that this was the right choice" explains Michel. The two guys met in the winter of 2007/2008 when Francois settled in the nearby Foret Fouesnant, NW Brittany, and won the Challenge Espoir Region Bretagne. Since then they've rubbed shoulders with each other, but had never sailed together until recently, during the Grand Prix de Douarnenez. This announcement coincides with the arrival in Port-La-Foret of the new 60 footer, FONCIA, from Lymington (UK) where she was being manufactured at Green Marine. The construction is progressing well and the assembly of the FONCIA jigsaw will continue at CDK Technologies until late August, at which point she is due to be launched. They now have 211 days left before the start of the Barcelona World Race. 211 days, during which time Michel has an 18 metre monohull to complete and a Route du Rhum to compete in. Meantime Francois also has a bit on: Quiberon Solo, Solitaire du Figaro and Cap Istanbul in the autumn, all of which form part of his autumn race programme. This Thursday the two men got together in the offices of Mer Agitee to discuss their respective schedules and missions. Their collaboration has only just begun... ICAP Leopard Transatlantic Record Attempt The low pressure system we have been trying to ride has been very uncharacteristic the whole way across the Atlantic since the Grand Banks and yet again yesterday holding us up with lighter than expected winds for the third time this Attempt - I cant tell you how frustrating this is sitting and watching the clock countdown without going fast... anything under 20 knots of boat speed seems like we are standing still. The weather gods are not happy with Mr Leopard for some reason as we had the same problem for our last event, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which was a light air event yet again! Visit us at ullmansails.com 18 Foot Skiff European Championships - Day 3 Two teams had bad days the Hungarinan and the German Team Magic Marine and so changes settled in the second part of the fleet. The british Team TMF and the Denish Team GP Covers climbed one step to 5 and six, the Hungarians dropped to seven the rest of the fleet remained as it were before. The last race saw in dying winds two Teams of the end of the tableau gaining a good place in the last race, were they took some good shift in the last upwind and overran nearly the complete field in front of them except the first four. The day ended with a big party in a garden restaurant in Malcesine and the next day was layday, good for some teams that celebrated in some oldtown-Pubs of Malcesine until early morning. Korea Match Cup As well as the skippers ranked 1st and 2nd in the overall standings - Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team and Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing - there will be the addition of Francesco Bruni (ITA) Azzurra, back from the LV Trophy racing, as well as 2009 Korea Match Cup winner Paolo Cian (ITA) Team Italia. New names to the race circuit picture selected via wild card entries include; twenty three year old Phil Robertson (NZL) WAKA Racing winner of the recent Asian Match Racing Championship and Korean national Gunwoo Park (KOR) who only started match racing during November 2009. KM36 yachts have been especially commissioned for Korea Match Cup where a light and manoeuvrable model is required for close 'boat on boat' handling. Korea Match Cup racing will start on June 9th, culminating in a closing ceremony and a Stage 3 champion on June 13th. Korea Match Cup 2010 Skipper List: 2010 ISAF World Match Racing Tour Standings, AfterStage 2 of 10) Seychelles Regatta Previous editions of the Seychelles Sailing Cup and Seychelles Regatta have sometimes failed to live up to the expectations of sailing purists on account of the lack of wind that sometimes reigns over the periods between the opposing trades. Not so the Regatta that began on the morning of Sunday 23rd of May at Mahe's Eden Island, when the sound of sailcloth snapping edgily at the first winds of the south-east monsoon immediately set a new and encouraging tone to this popular, annual event that showcases the Seychelles islands as a dream sailing destination. With a turnout that included some of the most illustrious personalities of the European sailing scene: Michel Desjoyeaux; Armel Le Cleac'h; Samantha Davies; Yann Elies; Romain Attanasio; Jeremie Beyou; Servanne Escoffier; Jean Claude Dupuy and Yvon Beneteau, from the very start the 2010 Seychelles Regatta appeared primed to deliver results befitting the premier sailing event in the Seychelles calendar. With an average wind speed of 12 knots, the pace of this first leg was fast with Michel Desjoyeaux repeating his success of last year by finishing in first position (with handicap) in the Champagne Nicolas Feuillate boat, followed by Yann Elies on Hyundai and Armel Le Cleac'h aboard Chateau Perenne Grand Vin de Bordeaux. The second leg which took the race from east of Silhouette to Praslin's Anse Lazio, was won by Yvon Beneteau skippering Air Seychelles followed by Samantha Davies on Eden Island and Yann Elies captaining the locally sponsored Leopard 47' Hyundai. From this point on, fortune began to favour Hyundai with Yann Elies coming out on top in each of the next two races ahead of fellow racers Samantha Davies on C'est La Vie and Michel Desjoyeaux's Champagne Nicolas Feuillate. This was an eventual place on the victor's podium in the making - one that Elies would not surrender despite gaining only fourth place in the sixth race and being only two points ahead of his closest rival, Michel Desjoyeaux, coming into the final, nail-biting leg from Cousine back to Eden Island. This Hyundai won as a result of finishing second over the final 100 metres, but with an overall score of 10 points, sufficient to win top honours in the regatta by a margin of 3 points, with Armel Le Cleac'h earning 3rd place overall. The international Farr 30 teams are already well honed for the upcoming Tour de France a la Voile. There were some fabulous flying starts, clean manœuvres, impeccable mark roundings, gybes, tacks, spinnaker hoisting and close contact racing... the 7 crews put on an impressive performance in Le Havre today for the start of Normandy Sailing Week. The powerful current and the fabulous cliffs that characterise the North of Normandy make sailing in the Baie de Seine highly tactical and strategic. The best on the water today was the crew of "Courrier Dunkerque" skippered by Pierre-Loic Berthet, reigning French champion, who took the lead in the provisional general ranking thanks to a consistent performance, worthy of the top specialists in contact racing (2nd ,2nd and 1st). During this time, the other series and their crews (IRC, J80, Sportsboats, First 7.5) were making some final adjustments to their boats in preparation for their first day's racing tomorrow. 100 craft will take to the water from 1200 hrs local time, at which point the Normandy Sailing Week will really take off! Farr 30 Top Ten After 3 Races Plymouth Young Sailor Takes On Round Britain Challenge Ned said " The Round Britain is an amazing race - a real test of seamanship. I would like to thank both the Royal Western Yacht Club for amending the rules to let me compete and my school, Plymouth College for their support in helping me get to the start line. I want a career in sailing so this race is a must do event for both experience and my CV" Sailing on their 33ft boat Flair 2 which is one of smallest boats in the fleet will add to the challenge but this is the fourth time Ned's father has competed the first when Ned was just a few months old. Ned's progress can be followed on the Round Britain web site as he takes in the rugged west coast of Ireland, The deserted St Kilda islands, Muckle Flugga at the very top of the Shetlands as well as all the gas rigs and shipping in the North Sea and English Channel. Hurricane Season Predicted To Be Active - 14 to 23 named storms (top winds of 39 mph or higher), including: "If this outlook holds true, this season could be one of the more active on record," said Jane Lubchenco, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "The greater likelihood of storms brings an increased risk of a landfall. In short, we urge everyone to be prepared." The outlook ranges exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes, according to NOAA. His racing started in a BOD owned by his father, and after a few years in which he dominated the class in the late Fifties, he moved to the Hornet class and then quickly into catamarans at the emergence of racing in the two-hulled boats. A boatbuilder, who had served his apprenticeship in his home town of Brightlingsea, he joined forces with Roy Bacon to establish Sailcraft as the leading developer of catamarans. When John Fisk suggested Sailcraft to Rod Macalpine-Downie, the emergent designer found it very much to his liking. The team produced a range of boats from the original Thai Mk IV to the 60-foot British Airways for Robin Knox-Johnston. But, when in late 1960 Fisk announced that he wanted to race more internationally and had challenged Americans to a race in 25-foot catamarans, it was a heaven-sent opportunity for the combined talents - Rod to design and Reg and his team to build and rig such a boat. It was the start of the C-class and to race, in Fisk's words for "a little America's Cup." In under a year, Reg had built and developed a prototype (Hellcat) and after many modifications the design for the challenger was complete. Hellcat 2 had but one afternoon's racing before she was shipped to New York for Fisk and Macalpine-Downie to race against Wildcat. The British boat's win started a mini-career for Reg, who built all the boats that defended the trophy for nine years. He also sailed five of the winning boats including the magical Lady Helmsman, with her half wing half sail rig. The contacts he made during his C-class campaigns led to a collaboration between Reg and Rodney March for a new B-class boat, Tornado, for the 1967 IYRU trials to select a new international class. Reg built two; one had a wing-masted una-rig, the other a more conventional sloop. Terry Pearce and the designer sailed the una-rigged boat, which proved faster until the mast broke, while Reg sailed the other with Bob Fisher, which went on to win the trials. Fisk pushed the IYRU to choose the Tornado for the Olympics of 1976. Reg could not resist this challenge and trained hard with his brother-in-law John Osborn. Their attention to detail was rewarded with the world championship and the Olympic gold medal, and the subsequent award of the MBE. His one regret was that as the 1979 world champion, he was thwarted of a second chance for a gold at the Moscow Games when the British sailing tem was withdrawn because of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. Recently he observed the irony of the allied intervention in that country. His recent business venture, with White Formula, included a design cooperation with fellow Tornado gold medallist, Yves Loday. Following the Hurricane (in several sizes) came the Spitfire, storm and Shadow catamarans. For his own sailing, Reg chose a class he knew from his youth and finished a glassfibre BOD which he launched a year ago and raced with members of his extensive family.
