VRSport.tv International Moth UK Nationals
The wind just didn't play ball on the final day, with the odd gust reaching 7 knots across Portland Harbour, but more commonly 3-4 knots and much less. At 1pm the race team called time and raised AP over A to abandon racing for the day. This means the results at the end of Monday stand and Robert Greenhalgh has been crowned the UK International Moth class champion for 2016.
At the prize giving Robert thanked the Race Team, all the staff at the WPNSA, the UK Moth Class Association for putting all the work in ahead of the event and the sponsors; VRsport.tv, blueteq, Brand Identity, Ronstan and Noble Marine.
The podium was completed by David Hivey in second and Dylan Fletcher in third.
The next major event for the International Moth Class is the MS Amlin Moth Regatta in Bermuda from 2-9 December. In 2017 the World Championships are being held in Malcesine on Lake Garda from 23-29 July.

VR Sport.tv International 14 World Championships
It was a slow start to the fifth day at the VR Sport T.V. International 14 World Championships in Carnac. There was very little breeze across Quiberon Bay, and so unsurprisingly the AP flag was hoisted.
The start gun went at one o'clock with an even spread of boats across the line. The leaders struck out right, towards the shore, with Roger Gilbert and Ben McGrane leading the fleet into the windward mark along the starboard layline, closely followed by Glen Truswell and Sam Pascoe. A relatively short beat meant that the fleet was tightly packed together at the windward mark. This put immense pressure on the crews to get the kites up, to avoid being buried under the fleet.
As the race wore on, Truswell and Pascoe continued to hound Gilbert and McGrane, but the duo were having none of it, and extended to their lead to finish comfortably ahead of the rest of the fleet. Nurton and Ash finished in third, with Mark Krstic and James Lanati just behind in fourth.
After today's racing, the crews were able to discard one of their results. Although this hasn't changed the top three rankings, it does mean that Trusswell and Pascoe were able to discard their 7th, which has given them a seven point lead over Neale Jones and Ed Fitzgerald, and Gilbert and McGrane, who are occupying second and third respectively on equal points.
The next two days are forecast to be light and shifty.

RORC Cherbourg Race
The penultimate race of the RORC Season's Points Championship often has a party atmosphere, it is the last race of the RORC season in English and French waters. About seven hundred sailors will be making the dash to France, in a variety of yachts racing under the IRC Rating system, and under the Class40 Rule. For some classes, the RORC Cherbourg Race is the season decider, for others who are already assured of class wins, there is the opportunity to race and celebrate in Cherbourg.
In IRC Zero, the duel between Piet Vroon's Dutch Ker 51 Tonnerre 4 and Avenarius & Gondesen's German Ker 46 Shakti will come to a conclusion. Neither will be taking part in the final race of the series, the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Shakti leads Tonnerre by over 30 points, and the German team will only need to finish the race to be sure of victory for the season.
In IRC One, Nick Jones' First 44.7, Lisa is likely to win both the class and the RORC Season's Points Championship overall, if the team can successfully finish the race. Alan Hannon's RP45 Katsu poses the biggest threat to Lisa. Past RORC Commodore, Mike Greville racing Ker 39 Erivale III has an outside chance of winning the class, but may well be focused on holding off a strong challenge from Edward Broadway's Ker 40 Hooligan VII.
In IRC Three, Delamare & Mordret's JPK 10.80 Dream Pearls leads the class by just 7.6 points, the team from St Malo will have a terrific battle with Louis-Marie Dussere's JPK 10.10 Raging Bee, who will be racing into their home port of Cherbourg.
18 yachts will be racing in IRC Four including the run-away leader, Noel Racine, racing his JPK 10.10 Foggy Dew. The French team is also entered for the last race of the RORC Season's Points Championship, the Rolex Middle Sea Race. A good result in Cherbourg, if followed by a triumph in Malta, could see Foggy Dew win the championship overall.
World Match Race Rankings
The World Sailing Match Race rankings have been released and Taylor Canfield (ISV) is on top of the Open section while Anna Kjellberg (SWE) moves up to #1 in the women's.
Finally taking top spot for the first time in over a year in the last rankings release, Canfield still holds an advantage over his big rival Ian Williams (GBR).
Winner of the Grade 1 Energa Sopot Match Race, Nicklas Dackhammar (SWE) moves up to #48, his best ranking.
Anna Kjellberg takes the top spot in the women's division changing places with former #1, Camilla Ulrikkeholm (DEN), who drops to #2. Kjellberg moved up thank to a win at the Grade 1 Lysekil Women's Match.
Anne Claire Le Berre (FRA) sits third in the women's rankings.

The Battle Of Helsinki - M32 Series Scandinavia
Helsinki, Finland: The M32 Series Scandinavia includes five regional regattas. The fourth event after Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Aarhus will be sailed in Helsinki (Hernesaaren Ranta), September 1st-3rd. Current leaders in the Scandinavian Series are GAC Pindar skippered by the British match race world champion, Ian Williams. Sweden's Nicklas Dackhammar and his Essiq Racing Team are only two points behind the Britons before the Battle of Helsinki.
Five teams will be seen on the start line in Helsinki. The newcomers representing the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS) will bring young Swedish talents to Helsinki. Skipper Rasmus Rosengren's team, Artemis Youth Racing, is preparing for the Youth America's Cup with support from Artemis Racing.
The M32 race course will be set in close vicinity of the race village. Depending on the wind conditions 4-7 races will be sailed on all three days.

Ancient Egyptians Used Metal In Wooden Ships
A piece of wood recovered at a dig near the Great Pyramid of Giza shows for the first time that ancient Egyptians used metal in their boats, archaeologists said Wednesday.
Circular and U-shaped metal hooks were found in one of the components of a boat, discovered the same year as Khufu's "solar boat", buried near the Great Pyramid.
Solar boats, buried in pits next to royal burial chambers, may have been used for a pharaoh's funeral procession, while others were intended for travels in the afterworld.
The piece of wood measures eight metres (25 foot) in length, 40 centimetres (almost 16 inches) wide and four centimetres in thickness.
From the boats found across Egypt, "we have not found the use of metals in their frames like in this boat", Mohamed Mostafa Abdel-Megeed, an antiquities ministry official and expert in boat-making in ancient Egypt, told AFP on the sidelines of a Cairo press conference.
The U-shaped hooks were used "to place the paddles to prevent friction of wood against wood", said Sakuji Yoshimura, an Egyptologist from Japan.

Launchings
Spectrum 61 is a design concept for a 200ft sailing catamaran. The project comes from the drawing board of Australian studio Sedlmayer Associates Naval Architects. This super cat features a 26.2m beam providing enough space for a range of onboard amenities, including a THX theatre, entertainment areas, underwater viewing room, infinity pool and spa.
The yacht has been designed with bulbous bows engineered to provide the bulb geometry necessary for a sailing cat, with spray rails to suit the axe bow. These hydrodynamic features, the designers claim, have produced its distinct axe blade and associated bulb recess at each bow.
Each hull is equipped with a 1850kW MTU 12V 4000 M71 main engine and mated with 1.8-metre CP feathering propellers and associated gears.
In addition, Spectrum 61 is set to carry 100kW Voith rim drive thrusters located in each hull near the bow.
Twin foil-rudders in each hull are configured to assure maximum turning efficiency when tacking. The designers say a speed of up to 20 knots is achievable under sail or power in optimum conditions.

British design studio Philippe Briand has recently revealed to SYT a brand new 30 metre sailing yacht concept. Named Egoist, the carbon sloop has been designed with a passionate owner in mind, eager to strip back disturbance from a large crew and additional guests in order to fully indulge in the experience of sailing.
Inside, she features a spacious main salon, an expansive master suite, and accommodation for up to two dedicated crew members. Egoist has been conceived as a fully customisable vessel, as Briand concludes, she is envisioned as "a pure pleasure for the owner, not bowing the demands or tastes of anyone else. The concept of Egoist is to become an owner's self-indulgent fantasy; it should be the yacht that they have always dreamed of owning."

German yacht builders, the Hanse Group have released the first model in their new 8 series - the Hanse 588. This 17 metre (58 foot) model is an innovation in yacht building and design. It introduces several new design features - including a unique "Silent Master Cabin", new hull design, updated interior design and the choice of 72 possible layout combinations.
World leading designers, Judel/Vrolijk & co have taken their design flair to another level with the introduction of the unique 'Silent Master Cabin' in the bow. This transforms the master bedroom into a 'sanctuary'. Here, the specially developed insulation shields buyers against yacht noise as all pumps and devices have been re-located to other areas. Even the air-conditioning unit is encapsulated so buyers can drift to sleep in peace and in the perfect climate.
The Hanse 588 also features a new hull design with six hull windows conveniently positioned at eye level from seating areas. These combined with the skylight of almost 3 square metres and twenty ventilation hatches provide plenty of light and air below deck.

Beneteau representatives announced Wednesday that in addition to the Oceanis Yacht 62, the company will introduce two more new sailboat models, the Oceanis 35.1 and Oceanis 38.1, at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis on Oct. 6-10, 2016.
The Oceanis 35 and 38 models of the past, known for their customizable layout, have evolved into two new models for 2017 with redesigned interiors and exteriors, offering a choice of ten versions in all.
The two new cruisers offer a choice between a standard mast or carbon mast and with or without a furling drum. Experienced racers, cruisers and charter companies will benefit from these personalized rigging options.
A new L-shaped galley located on the port side of the 45-degree companionway provides a facing seat salon arrangement, which creates seating for eight around the table. A long galley layout is still available. The chart table has been made more practical and suited to the needs of today's sailors and even folds away creating additional space in the salon. The owner's cabin is now accessed by double doors offering privacy when needed while maintaining the sense of openness characteristic of their predecessors.
