Kiwis Win Etchells Open European Championship

After two days of tricky shifting breeze in the Solent, the New Zealand Team racing Feng Shui of Andrew Wills, Anatole Masfen and Matthew Kelway, has won the 2016 Etchells Open European Championship. The team from Royal Akarana Yacht Club scored no worse than a seventh, in the four race series, to win the first regatta of the event, and bragging rights for the forthcoming 2016 Etchells World Championship.
The New Zealand team, who are all from Auckland won the series in a 50 boat fleet of Olympic and America's Cup winners as well as as a multitude of World Champions. Current British National Champion, Ante Razmilovic, racing under the burgee of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda ITA, was second. Steve Benjamin's team from the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club Connecticut USA was just a point behind in third. America's Cup winner and past Etchells World Champion, John Bertrand sailing for the Royal Brighton YC, Victoria AUS was the winner of the last race of the series.
Racing at the 2016 Etchells World Championship will start on Monday 5th September and conclude on Saturday September 10th. 58 teams from fourteen countries will be taking part. Big Breeze Baptism Of Fire For Cascais Sb20 World Championship
The Cascais SB20 World Championships got off to a strong start today, Tuesday August 30 with three races held in testing but hugely enjoyable conditions with Portuguese sun and strong breezes.
The first two races of the day were held offshore on an Atlantic course, in 15-25 knot north-westerly breezes with gusts in the high 20s, creating magnificent downwind conditions for the asymmetric sportsboat fleet. Competitors enjoyed a sleigh ride on the Atlantic rollers on the offwind legs, reaching speeds of up to 18 knots.
For the third race organisers from the host Clube Naval de Cascais moved the racing closer inshore, which added a tactical element to the day with reading the shifts proving key.
In a day that tested both boat handling, crew work, stamina and wind strategy, few teams managed to avoid a mid-fleet, high scoring finish. By far the boat of the day was Hugo Rocha, sailing New Territories (RUS 3711), who scored 2, 3, 1 over the days' three races to clearly lead overnight. Rocha is a Portuguese Olympic medalist who was runner-up at the 2014 SB20 World Championships and is looking to go one better this time.
Vasco Serpa and team on Animal/Clever Mobility (POR 3114) had a strong start to their regatta with a 1-2 finish, coming back from their first result of an 11th. Chris Dare's Australian team on Flirtatious also picked up two podium finishes and a 14th to finish third at the end of the day. The first race win went to Ukranian Olympian Rodion Luka (Luka, UKR2042), but a 25th in the third race could prove a problem with just one discard over the series.
With six different nations represented in the top 10 competition looks set to be fierce for the Nations Cup, the trophy that will be awarded to the country with the three best results. Currently Russia is in the lead, followed by Portugal with 92 points and then France with 134 points.

Event Decisions For Tokyo 2020 Games
The ten Sailing events at the 2016 Olympic Games were supposed to continue on for Tokyo 2020, but a shifting wind from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has forced World Sailing to retrim its sails.
The 2016 slate included five male events (470, 49er, RS:X, Laser, Finn), four female events (470, 49erFX, RS:X, Radial), and one mixed event (Nacra 17). While the hope is for minimal changes, nothing occurs without debate.
Decisions are expected in February, so planning for the 2020 Games is in a six month limbo period. Depending on your view, this is either catastrophe or opportunity. What must be expected, however, is that Sailing in the Olympics is in for a shift.

12 Footer Irish Championship

With so much interest in single handed Olympic sailing, it is appropriate that the 12-footers had their Irish championships a week after Annalise's success in Rio at the Royal St. George Yacht Club. The 12-footers were used for the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1928.
These two classes share the same hull design, but they carry different rigs, the International 12 Footer uses a single sail in a balanced lug, while the DBSC 12 has the mast located further aft, and uses the same sail area in a gunter rig, along with a small jib. Racing within Dun Laoghaire harbour commenced with a force two wind from the north-west, on a traditional triangular course.
The final race was sailed in a force two breeze which kept all the competitors bunched for the entire race of two laps. Again, it was Sgadan which pulled out ahead with Pixie second.
These two were on equal points, and thus the Irish 12 foot championship went to the DBSC 12, and winner of the final race.

Crewsaver is to take the lead on lifejacket safety launching its 'Are you #LifejacketSafe' campaign at Southampton Boat Show. Visitors to this year's Southampton Boat Show, which takes place 16th - 25th September 2016, can be part of this new initiative by visiting the Crewsaver stand (J250) at the show.
As well as having their photo taken wearing a Crewsaver lifejacket in Crewsaver's #LifejacketSafe frame (which will then be added to the 'We are #LifejacketSafe' wall), they'll be entered into a competition to win an Abu Dhabi ErgoFit Extreme lifejacket as worn by the winners of the Volvo Ocean Race, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, and receive hints and tips on lifejacket safety.

Just four slots are left in the annual Marine Ad Agency (MAA) five-a-side football tournament.
The tournament takes place at the Southampton Boat Show on the evening of September 20 at Goals Soccer Centre, Millbrook and will again raise money for the Children's Intensive Care Unit (Friends of PICU) and G4 Surgery at Southampton General Hospital.
Last year £1,000 was raised for the causes with more than £5,000 raised since the tournament began six years' ago.
The tournament has space for 16 teams, each of eight players.
Last year the MAA Cup was won by The Yacht Market who return to defend their title.
Other teams signed up to play in 2016 are Marine Ad Agency, British Marine, RS Sailing, Matchtech, PSP Logistics, Premier Marinas, Lewmar, Crewsaver & Marine Super Store, Southampton FC, PICU and SGH Theatres.

The Clipper Race TV Series The Race of Their Lives 2 produced by 1080 Media TV, has picked up a prestigious award as 'Best Documentary Series-UK' in the industry TMT Media Awards 2016.
The second season of the highly acclaimed sports adventure series follows the people taking on the latest edition of the Clipper Race in seven one-hour shows.
The programmes have been distributed to broadcasters around the world, reaching well in excess of one hundred countries so far, and have run as each show is completed during the race. The final show will be distributed in September when the full series is expected to be repeated in its entirety on many channels, with additional broadcasters also taking it at that time too. The shows have been distributed throughout Asia including China, Australia, Middle East, Africa, Europe including the UK and Russia, plus North and South America.

A new warehouse and distribution center for Garmin International Inc. will be built on a new road named One Garmin Way in Olathe, Kansas, USA.
Garmin, maker of navigation and wireless devices, and the city of Olathe will jointly announce Friday that groundbreaking will begin for a $200 million expansion project at the company's headquarters.
The new construction includes a 720,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution center.
The new facility will take two years to build. After that, the company plans to spend another two years renovating its existing manufacturing and warehouse space to become research, development and office space.
The company now employs about 2,800 on its 96-acre headquarters property. The completed expansion would accommodate 2,600 more workers.
Garmin International is a business unit of Garmin Ltd., based in Switzerland. The parent company reported in July that it had double-digit sales growth in the second quarter in its fitness and outdoor product lines.
For the year, Garmin Ltd. set its earnings outlook at $2.50 a share, up from $2.25 a year ago. Full-year revenues are expected to be $2.9 billion, up from $2.82 billion.
Ian Harrison MBE (GBR)
Ian Harrison MBE passed away on Friday, August 26 after a long period of ill health.
Ian was born and grew up in Poole, UK on March 21, 1937 and passed away in Leicester, UK on August 26, 2016 aged 79.
A foundation member of both the Sailability movement and the International Foundation for Disabled Sailing (IFDS), his energy and commitment was key to sailing being accepted as a Paralympic medal sport in 2000. He was also the IFDS Technical Delegate for the first Paralympic Sailing Competition in Sydney.
Ian is survived by his dedicated and loving wife Pauline, herself an energetic and committed volunteer for their sport and the community. Pauline was Chair of the IFDS Development Committee for countless years, organising conferences and seminars and supporting Ian in all his endeavours. Their unique partnership has enabled the sport to create many opportunities for sailors with a disability at the participation, development and high performance levels.
Ian's outstanding contributions to sport and the community have already been formally recognised. In 1988, he was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire). In 2005, Ian was awarded the IPC Paralympic Order, the highest tribute a person connected with the Paralympic Movement can achieve. Other holders of the Paralympic Order include former President of the IOC Juan Antonio Samaranch, with Ian being the first person directly connected with sailing to receive the Order. ISAF (now World Sailing) awarded the ISAF Long Service Gold Medal to Ian in 2008.
Ian trained as a social worker in Britain and was to finish a distinguished career as the Director of the Leicestershire Association of the Disabled. Ian was a founding member of Sailability in the 1980s, starting the British organization with the overriding aim that no disabled person should be denied the opportunity to sail. He went on to become Chairman and then Vice-Chairman when Sailability merged with the Royal Yachting Association's Seamanship Foundation to become RYA Sailability. Ian became an IFDS Vice-Chairman at the foundation's inception in 1988, and ten years later took over the role of Chairman. Ian retired from the post of Chairman at the beginning of 2005.
World Sailing and the Para World Sailing Committee extends its deepest sympathy to Pauline and family. We also give thanks for the life of a wonderful, generous and energetic man who played such a fundamental role in the development of para sailing.
