French/German Team All4one Poised For Win
The other match between Emirates Team New Zealand and Italy's Mascalzone Latino, both currently second equal, will be key to resolving the other top places. Tonight, all four boats are at the top of the points table with only one point separating them.
Strong gusty northwest winds curtailed racing for much of the day and only two races were sailed in 20-knot winds, close to the top limit for competition, before race officials abandoned racing until tomorrow.
A bad gennaker takedown that led to a crew injury knocked TEAMORIGIN out of the running for a top place. The British boat, skippered by Ben Ainslie, had made a strong start, only to be overtaken by Mascalzone Latino on the first leg of their race together. Ainslie closed down on the Italian boat and led by three seconds at the end of the first run.
Things went wrong on the gennaker drop and as it went overboard, a sheet wrapped around the leg of trimmer Mike Mottl and started to drag him over the side.
Hospital authorities tonight reported that Mottl had no broken bones. They were still assessing muscle injuries.
Racing ended prematurely at 1900, when there was a steering linkage problem with ITA 90, one of the Mascalzone Latino boats. Fortunately, the organisers now have the option of using one of the BMW Oracle Racing boats, USA87, which was damaged earlier in the regatta. The BOR shore crew has been working around the clock to affect repairs and the boat could be available for racing, if necessary, on Thursday.

* The final four days of the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena will be televised around the globe, live, beginning on 3rd June. In territories without live television, fans can pick up the programme on a live internet stream.
With 10 of the best sailing teams in the world duelling on the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean off Sardinia, the Louis Vuitton Trophy is a premiere sailing competition featuring America's Cup style match racing.
The television production will be the next best thing to being there, with inputs from two on board cameras, two chase-boat cameras and a helicopter, as well as VirtualEye animation graphics, on board audio, and expert commentary.
The live television feed will be available both online and from broadcasters. The internet feed will be streamed on the event website, www.louisvuittontrophy.com with English and Italian commentary.
Broadcasters taking the live television feed include Italy's RAI network, Russia's NTV, ESPN360 in the USA, and SailingChannel in Europe, while SailTV will stream the broadcast over the web. The SailTV web player for the Louis Vuitton Trophy has also been distributed free as an embed to dozens of top sailing sites worldwide. -- Paul Cayard
Vendee - Saint Petersburg
Ruling the waves and keeping their rival at bay, Yves Le Blevec and his crew chose a route to the west of the island of Gotland. Convinced they had made the right choice, they awaited this morning's rankings to see how far they were ahead of Crepes Whaou ! 3. Only to discover that Antoine Koch, Franck-Yves and Kevin Escoffier, by passing to the east of the island had taken the lead. It may only be a small lead, but it was a difficult blow for the crew to accept, especially when they thought they had been doing so well with the various difficulties in their path. To a certain extent, that just goes to prove how demanding the standard is that is set by the two frontrunners.
This closely fought battle between the two leaders has of course, had a consequence concerning the gap they have achieved over those following on behind. Crepes Whaou ! 2, in spite of all the hard work, is finding it difficult to keep up and can only hope the frontrunners will be slowed down at some point to enable them to get back in the running. As they round the tip of Denmark, their hopes may be partly fulfilled: the latest forecasts from Meteo France suggest that the two leaders will encounter strong headwinds and rough seas, while those following them, may well experience better conditions.

Masters Of Benevolence
Sometimes the pleasure is worth all the pain. The 2010 Master Mariners Regatta marked the 45th rendition of the gathering of all things wood to do some good.
The annual regatta celebrates a moving flotilla of maritime history with roots dating back to 1867. In those days the spectacle of watching the working scows and massive coastal schooners was observed and bet upon by thousands on Telegraph Hill. 30-40 fully crewed schooners would compete in a timed fashion from the foot of Telegraph Hill, southward to Hunters Point, then eastward to Oakland Creek. A beat out the Golden Gate and a finish back at the foot of Telegraph Hill, would consummate this Annual July 4th tradition. Funds raised by sponsors of each vessel would go towards a charity foundation for the orphans and widows of sailor lost at sea.
Resurrected in 1965 with the stewardship of Maritime Attorney William Vaughn, The Master Mariners Benevolent Association sought out and attracted many of the vessels of yesteryear with a new approach and date. The now Memorial Day Weekend regatta would serve as a catalyst to get some of the elderly, pre- WWII vessels out and racing again, combined with a proper wooden boat show later in summer (this year on Sunday, June 27th). The funds from the boat show and tee shirt sales along with excess membership funds all going to towards benevolent activities of the group's foundation which works to help keep traditional maritime activities and history alive. While the vessels sailing in today's events pale in size, they are massive in color and character. Many of these vessels were designed and built right here in San Francisco, and were the precursor to the carbon and kevlar go fast machines we see every weekend.

Dragon East Coast Championship
The Dragon Class has been experiencing a steady revival in its UK fortunes over the past year, and the 26 strong fleet challenging for this year's East Coast Dragon Championship was further evidence that you really can't keep a good class down.
Giving Schonher a good run for his money throughout the regatta was British Dragon Association Chairman Patrick Gifford from Aldeburgh, crewed by Harry Pym and Andrew "Balou" Pritchard-Bennett, who won three of the seven races and was hard on Schonher's heels throughout the regatta. After two days and six races in winds that were constantly force four to five the fleet went into the final day with Gifford trailing Schohner by just two points and Mark Wade, sailing with his wife Mandy Wade and Duncan Grindley seven points behind in third place.

Victory In New York For Uniquely Singapore
Since the start of Clipper 09-10 from the River Humber on the east coast of England on 13 September last year the crews have had to battle everything from major storms to the frustrations of the Doldrums and each individual race has delivered very different conditions. The latest one, a 1,420 mile race from Jamaica has been characterised by wind holes which have seen fortunes change on a daily basis for the internationally sponsored teams and kept race fans on the edge of their seats.
All ten teams will be alongside by the morning of Thursday 3 June for a short but event filled stopover.
"That's over 25 years which covers huge developments in the sport of sailing", he comments. "To be Editor of two of the UK's top magazines and, in the case of Yachting World, the world's leading brand, has been a special experience. Back in 1985 we wrote on manual typewriters and took duplicates and online publishing was nowhere in sight and I have been lucky enough to oversee the transition to modern magazine and online reporting." There was also, he commented, plenty of time to sail, including three Atlantic crossings and cruises in the world's major sailing destinations.
His successor, David Glenn, has been Deputy Editor on Yachting World for 32 years. He has, as Andrew observed, had "plenty of time to practice".
* Leading figures from the world of sailing and yacht racing will come together in Estoril, Portugal, from 14-15 December 2010 for the third edition of the World Yacht Racing Forum at the Estoril Congress Centre. The two-day conference will include many new features this year such as a new interactive exhibition lounge, additional workshop sessions, and an online networking tool to connect delegates prior to the conference. Delegates will also be invited to participate in a special Golf Day hosted by the organisers on Thursday 16 December.
The event will once again be held with the continued association and support from the Yacht Club de Monaco under the High Patronage of its President, HSH Prince Albert II. As one of the world's most prestigious and well known yacht clubs, the YCM was the official host of the first World Yacht Racing Forum in 2008 and is pleased to continue its support of the event in 2010. The 500-seat main auditorium in the impressive Estoril Congress Centre will provide an ideal stage for the two days of lively discussions and panel debates at the Forum. A comprehensive speaker schedule is being put together with input from an advisory panel of some of sailing's most respected industry leaders.

Books and charts from well-known publishers such as Adlard Coles, Wiley and Seafarer are now on offer. The company is also stocking titles on a variety of topics, including marine fiction, navigation, repair and maintenance, buying a boat, cruising under power and sail, yacht and dinghy racing and more.

* Hyde Sails has announced the appointment of a new loft in Galway on the west coast of Ireland.
The only sailmakers on Ireland's west coast, Cullen Sailmakers was established in Galway in 1984. Since then Glendy Cullen has established a strong reputation for his loft's expertise and friendly service, manufacturing and repairing sails for both modern designs as well as the more traditional side, such as the Cannemare and Galway Hooker gaff rig boats.
The tie-up with Hyde was the next logical step, enabling the loft to offer an even more comprehensive service
Shore crew sailmaker for the Volvo Ocean Race Irish Green Dragon team, Glendy worked closely with the sailors and their onboard sailmaker during the last race and is similarly involved ahead of the next race, which is due to finish in Galway in June 2012.
* The Global Ocean Race 2011-12 has announced Mobilarm as an official Race Partner Mobilarm, manufacturers of man overboard systems and VHF personal locator beacons, provides sailors of all levels a means to safeguard crew from falling overboard undetected. The Mobilarm V100 for example, is a pocket-sized beacon that can be integrated into a life-jacket and, in a man overboard event, will automatically transmit the Latitude and Longitude directly to the vessel's VHF radio and then to the onboard electronic charting system for precise in-water tracking. -- globaloceanrace.com
* Garmin Ltd today reported sales of US$431m for its first quarter ended March 27, 2010, a decrease of one per cent compared to the same period a year ago. Net income fell to US$37.3m, or 19 cents a share, from $48.0m, or 24 cents a share a year ago.
Garmin said that its marine segment revenue increased 9 per cent to US$41m for the quarter. It said that North American sales were off by 8 per cent to US$243m, while sales in Europe rose 1 per cent to US$144m. Sales in Asia rose 54 per cent to US$43m.
Despite lower-than-expected Q1 profits, Chief Financial Officer Kevin Rauckman said the company expects to meet its full-year forecast for both sales and earnings per share. -- IBI, www.ibinews.com
* The publisher of Yachts and Yachting Magazine, GNM Media, has announced its acquisition of Dinghy Sailing Magazine. The title will be incorporated into Yachts and Yachting, which will continue to focus on the active dinghy and keelboat sailor.
'Yachts and Yachting has always covered dinghy and keelboat sailing, and has a strong international reputation. We have no plans to change the focus for Y&Y, which provides an interesting and informative magazine of the highest quality for dinghy and keelboat sailors,' explains Y&Y Editor Gael Pawson.
"Sadly, in today's climate Dinghy Sailing Magazine is not financially sustainable as a publication on its own. However, by merging the two titles we will be able to ensure that existing subscriptions are honoured and readers continue to receive a magazine with comprehensive dinghy coverage. In addition, we can continue to invest in high quality content, as we have done since we took on Yachts and Yachting last August."
