Schiller Stepping Down From America's Cup Role
Harvey Schiller, a former executive director of the U.S. Olympic Committee, is stepping down as commercial commissioner of the America's Cup.
Will Chignell, the chief marketing and communications officer with the America's Cup Event Authority, said Monday that it was Schiller's decision to leave.
Schiller has held the position for two years. He didn't immediately respond to calls or an email from The Associated Press seeking comment Monday.
America's Cup boss Russell Coutts didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
It's not known if Schiller's departure is related to a case Emirates Team New Zealand brought against ACEA before an arbitration panel.
It's believed that the arbitration panel recently heard the case brought by the Kiwis after the ACEA pulled a qualifying regatta that had been planned for Auckland next year. In March 2015, Schiller notified Team New Zealand that it was losing the qualifier in part because it had supported another syndicate in a dispute over Coutts' plan to downsize the boats that will be used in the 2017 America's Cup in Bermuda. -- Bernie Wilson, AP Sports Writer
M32 Series Returns To Miami
The popular M32 Series is set to return to the blue-water shores of Miami, Florida in a four-event winter Series from January to April 2017 organised by Aston Harald Sports. M32 owners and professional teams from around the world are invited to compete in the Miami series with the largest ever M32 fleet expected to gather on Biscayne Bay.
This will be the third time that the M32 class holds its winter series in Miami.
The M32 Winter Series will feature four separate 3-day regattas starting in January and ending in April. Points will be accumulated over the Series with the now infamous trophy, the 'Rooster', making its comeback for the overall winner. The current defender of the M32 Miami Winter Series is American team US One skippered by Miami resident and former Match Racing World Champion Taylor Canfield.
As James Pleasance, M32 North America Director explains, competition for the 2017 Miami Winter Series is expected to be very high "Just in the last year, we have visited several venues across North America with the M32's in Newport, Chicago, Harbor Springs, Minnesota, and San Francisco and Long Beach to come this fall. With the fleet now growing across North America, and even with some of our European owners hoping to come to Miami, we know it will be a great series in Miami with an amazing atmsophere."

What's Maori For Chutzpah?
Man who smashed the America's Cup sells 'souvenirs' of his actions
The man who smashed up the America's Cup more than 20 years ago is now selling the shirt he wore during the attack on Trade Me.
Maori activist Benjamin Nathan, who was then 28, walked into Auckland's Royal Yacht Squadron on March 14, 1997 and took to the sailing trophy with a sledgehammer, whilst chanting in Maori.
Today he's listed the Maori sovereignty T-shirt he says he was wearing at the time, on the online auction website.
Nathan said he was selling the items to raise funds for a film he wanted to make.

This nomination is maybe a little overdue but it is well deserved for two different but very closely related reasons. Last year Mischa took an early DeckSweeper to the A-Class worlds where he was pushed into 2nd by Glenn Ashby - who hastily recut his sail to match the new rig's clear performance gains. This year Heemskerk went one better winning all 7 races and the world title. So a smart inventor and a half-decent sailor as well

The arrival of a new Wally is always an event. Other closely watched newcomers in the modern class, are the tryptic, the all new Swan 50's vying for the Edmond de Rothschild trophy : Cuordileone, Genapi and Ladykiller who make their debut appearance at the Voiles. These pure racing machines were designed by Argentine naval architect, Juan Kouyoumdjian, the class chaired by German Olympic champion, Jochen Schumann, no stranger himself to the Voiles.
Always among the most awaited stars of the Voiles, there should be no less than four of these grand dames making an appearance this year. Alongside the spectacular gaff rigged schooner Elena - 41m60 by design wizard Nathanael Herreshoff - competing in the category Grands Tradition for the Rolex Trophy - sistership Eleonora (replica of the Westward) of the same length over the deck and by the same architect; as well as much awaited newcomer Naema. Smaller in size, the fourth schooner, Kelpie of Falmouth, 20 meters over the deck, is the eldest, built in 1928.
As for the gaff rigged cutters, Herreshoff is honoured by the elegant fleet of New York 30's - Linnet owned by Patrizion Bertelli, Oriole and Rowdy, to be joined this year by NY40 Chinook, and class new comer, NY50 Spartan, 22 meters over the deck.
For the third consecutive year the prestigious 15m J1 class will playout the last leg in their annual championship. Two races are on the programme for Hispania, Mariska, The Lady Anne and Tuiga on Monday and Thursday, in addition to those races from Tuesday to Saturday, open to all the classics.
Illustrated Lectures By Ocean Cruising Club Members At The Southampton Boat Show
The Ocean Cruising Club will once again have a significant presence at the PSP Southampton Boat Show on the 16th-25th of September.
OCC Members Rev. Bob Shepton and Liza Copeland are giving illustrated lectures on 21 September at the Southampton Boat Show in the British Marine Members Lounge in the Mayflower Complex between 1100 and 1300. Bob's subject is "'A Sailing Life' - a circumnavigation, Atlantic crossings, Antarctic and Arctic Adventures, a double transit of the North West Passage, and some disasters". Liza Copeland resides in Vancouver, Canada and after more than 180,000 miles of cruising will be discussing her adventures in British Columbia and the UK.
The lectures are being conducted under the auspices of the OCC and sponsored by Topsail Insurance. Coffee will be served. Book signings will also take place for anybody interested.

Amsterdam-based designer Isaac Burrough is introducing his newly found design studio with a radical 60 metre sailing catamaran concept. The design makes the most of the incredible amount of space that such multihull vessel could provide with an emphasise on guest comfort and luxury instead of providing a strict performance experience which similar concepts in the past have focused on.
Just some of the striking features of the design includes a glass top superstructure that wraps over either side of the saloon, providing guest with a true outdoor feel even while relaxing inside.
Two 50 square meter VIP cabins are situated forward on either side of the main deck. These areas offer commanding views though full height windows forward without interfering with guest privacy as the bow area will be inaccessible to other guest while underway or at anchor. The remaining three cabins, each with an ensuite bathroom, are located forward in the lower port hull. This layout, with its two VIP cabins, would make the yacht ideal for charter use.

The yacht Doris, recognized by the US National Register of Historic Places, will finally be restored to her former glory after languishing in Crocker's Boat Yard in New London for more than 30 years.
David Snediker, of Taylor & Snediker Yacht Restoration, based out of a Mechanic Street facility, is spearheading the five-year project. The work will require space in an additional building, a 9,500-square-foot existing facility in Mystic in order to accommodate the 78-foot sailboat.
Snediker said the boat, which was built in 1905 by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol, R.I., is historically significant as it was the largest all‐wood boat built by the company and the first boat built to the Universal Rule.
It isn't often that an old sailor gets the chance to see an old, long-sold wooden boat return to the water in "like new" or even better condition.
That's exactly what happened, though, when Doug Hylan's boatshop launched the historic, 28-foot cat rigged yawl Molly B into the Benjamin River late last month after completion of a six-year restoration project.
Elegant with her sparkling brightwork, immaculate paint and exquisite lines, the 28-foot cat-rigged yawl Molly B gets under way moments after launching by the D.N. Hylan boatyard after a six-year restoration project.
Originally launched in 1927, Molly B was the last boat designed by the noted naval architect C.C. Hanley. Though not so well known as some of his contemporaries such as Nathaniel G. Herreshoff or B.B. Crowninshield - famous for, among other designs - their America's Cup contenders drawn around the turn of the 19th century, the Quincy, Mass.-based Hanley was in many ways their equal. He may be best known for the large racing cat boats he designed, Mucilage and Harbinger, which raced successfully against some of the latest designs by his more famous rivals. Hanley also came up with a design for a 1901 America's Cup contender - a centerboard cat boat 90 feet long overall with a beam of 36 feet and a truly terrifying sail plan. -- Stephen Rappaport
