Sailed in the blustery 18 to 20 knot winds of a building mistral, the match was the only one sailed Sunday as the wind continued to increase in intensity. Racing was canceled for the day as crews prepared for a second race between the Kiwi boat and Sweden's Artemis. The umpires penalized Oracle when Team New Zealand luffed their opponent, forcing them up head-to-wind, as the boats raced side-by-side towards the weather mark on port tack. "They made a gain to the left approaching the top mark," Barker said. "They were in a position where they probably would have led us around if we didn't make something happen, so we did a couple of luffs. The first one, we were required to give them room to get clear but they didn't take the room straight away and make an attempt to keep clear so we luffed a second time and could easily have made contact with them if we hadn't avoided. The umpires saw it the same way and penalized them." The confrontation momentarily cost the New Zealanders the lead and gave the advantage to Oracle, so the umpires added a red flag calling for an immediate penalty turn. The American boat circled before rounding the mark but was judged not to have completed a full turn. The umpires called for a second circle before clearing Oracle. With gusts well over 30 knots; the decision to cancel racing was certainly the right one. The forecast for Tuesday offers a measure of relief, with the winds expected to ease later this afternoon and overnight. By Tuesday morning, the wind should be back in a 'sailable' range. Today's announcement follows the conclusion of the last America's Cup match in February, and the start of the next Cup cycle. Last week TEAMORIGIN announced that it would be strengthening its management team as it ramps up its operations as it heads towards the 34th America's Cup. Simmer's new role as CEO sees him take responsibility for the sporting and technical activities of the team as well as overseeing the commercial operations. Simmer joins the team today in La Maddalena, Sardinia, where TEAMORIGIN is competing in the Louis Vuitton Trophy regatta against nine other world class America's Cup teams including the Defender BMW ORACLE Racing, TEAMORIGIN's opponent for the 1851 Cup in Cowes in early August this year. Racing continues in Italy until 6th June 2010. This will be Simmer's eighth America's Cup. He first competed in 1983 at the age of 27 as Navigator onboard Australia II. There he played a part in sporting history when Australia II became the first challenger to ever win the America's Cup ending 132 years of US supremacy and the longest winning streak in sports history. Since that momentous win, Simmer has had diverse roles and responsibilities in another seven America's Cup campaigns, culminating with the Swiss Alinghi team, winning the Cup in 2003 and 2007 in the role of Design Coordinator and most recently as the team's Managing Director.

The forecasted Mistral conditions finally kicked in truly entertaining the crowds packed along the Môle, the beaches and the headland - an estimated 16,500 spectators watching the first event. The Extreme 40 crews were pushed to the limit in the strong gusts, teetering on the edge of disaster numerous times. Second place on the overall podium went to Loick Peyron on Oman Sail Masirah who finished no lower than fourth in any of today's five races propelling them ahead of Paul Campbell-James' The Wave, Muscat. It was the podium result many had predicted with a showdown between Guichard and Peyron, but there is little doubt that Campbell-James, the 'junior' on the tour, is firmly in the fray and will become more of a threat as the season progresses. Britain's Mike Golding scored two wins on the final day to put Ecover Sailing Team in fourth place overall - a great result for the team who came so close to winning on the previous days. The teams 'played' hard today under extreme pressure - the mark roundings were close and fraught with danger, keeping the on-water referees busy as they handed out the penalties. Franck Cammas' Groupama 40 had mixed fortunes today with a 2nd, 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th after incurring a penalty in the final race which relegated them to 5th overall, 10 points ahead of The Ocean Racing Club and Red Bull Extreme Sailing on 81 points apiece in 6th and 7th. Team GAC Pindar completed the leaderboard in 8th on 55 points. Michael Gubi (AUT) wins the Grand Masters after a great last day while local hero Luksa Cicarelli (CRO) pulled out all the stops to snatch the Grand Grand Masters title on the final race and Richard Hart (GBR) continued his absolute dominances of the 15 Legends to take the title that all Finn sailors aspire to win. On the final day, the last two races were sailed in an ESE wind in front of Sustipan hill, close to shore on course Alpha. The wind increased during first race from 10 to 12 knots,and later in race 7 to more than 12 knots so Oscar was displayed for free and fun pumping. One gold medal and Grand Grand Master title (60-69 years old) will stay in Croatia. Luksa Cicarelli (CRO) from YC Labud picked up a sixth in the final race to take the title from Wouter Molenaar (NED), who had also led the most of the week. Richard Hart capped a remarkable week with a 9-23 to end up 44th overall and take the Legend category (70+) by a country mile. Second Legend Victor Kozlov (RUS) finished in 101st place with more than twice Hart's points total. In the Mini-Maxi Class, the Mills 68 Alegre was unstoppable, taking a clean sweep of all six races. In the Comet Class, Fral 2 won by a slender margin. The X-41 class produced a nail-biting finish. Raffica was the victor but only on count back after a tie with WB Five, helmed by Farr 40 World Champion, Alberto Signorini. In the Mylius Class, there was a clear winner. Fra Diavolo placed no worse than second in the seven race series. At the prize giving this evening, where all the winners were awarded with a Rolex timepiece, the organizers announced the inauguration of the Rolex Volcanoes' Maxi Race, which will form part of next year's Rolex Capri Sailing Week. This new offshore race will be organized by the International Maxi Association (IMA), in conjunction with the Yacht Club Gaeta and the Yacht Club Capri, with Rolex as title sponsor. The 400 nautical mile race will start from Gaeta, just to the north of Naples, and will take the fleet around two magnificent archipelagos in the central and southern Tyrrhenian Sea - the Pontinian Islands and the Aeolian Islands, including the active volcano of Stromboli - before returning to the finish off Capri. Course: Gaeta - Ponza - Capri - Stromboli - Vulcano - Alicudi - Capri Whilst the Maxi fleet is racing offshore, there will be inshore races for other classes. Starting in 15 knots of wind, ICAP Leopard will head north to hook into a weather system developing over Nova Scotia this weekend. It is hoped that ICAP Leopard will be able to ride this weather system all the way across, however she may encounter some high pressure on the approach to the UK. It is hoped a fast start will give ICAP Leopard a good chance of getting through the high pressure and across the line in record time. First of all, the float has been modified in order to improve stability by light wind. In principle, the flying boat doesn't need a hull; however a float is necessary under eight knots of breeze. The volume has thus been increased from 800 to 1200 liters, while the stern now measures 1.2 meters, the same width as an Australian 18-footer. A new system for adjusting the forward foil has also been developed to improve sailing in choppy conditions. The previous mechanical system was unable to anticipate the waves. A crewmember now observes the waves and can manually adjust the foils' incidence whilst sailing at high speed. A centerboard that allows a rapid change of foils has also been developed. The current foils limit the boat's speed to about 23 knots. Smaller foils, which have been designed to attain speeds of up to 28 knots, will be installed during the summer. The Mirabaud LX's goals for 2010 are to set new records on Lake Geneva, namely for the kilometer, the hour and the Ruban Violet (which uses the same route as the Bol d'Or Mirabaud). The crew will also participate in the famous Weymouth Speed Week in October. Other regattas are also on the agenda, such as the Geneva-Rolle-Geneva regatta, which the team won last year ahead of Jo Richards' famous Full Pelt. The SW wind that we are experiencing is helping us to make some good headway, the crew are very surprised as to how much of the sailing is upwind work. We have hit all the conditions in the last four days, big wind and waves, no wind, rain and like today; beautiful sunshine. The boat is performing very well, its great to be back at sea. Though with 4 people aboard the space below is unbelievably small but we are getting along well. We can already see ways to lighten the boat and look forward to working on it. It usually takes 3 or 4 days at sea to get used to the routine and movements and to get your appetite back, the crew and I are just about to have our first single pot meal: Tuna, noodles and corn.
