Contributions welcome, send to Artemis In Control At La Maddalena Their nearest competition after five days of competition between ten international teams is the French/German All4One. They have three points but with six races sailed, they also have three losses. Five teams are equal third, each with two points. Superb sailing conditions on the Golfo di Arzachena off the Sardinian island of La Maddalena saw five races completed but, with half of the opening round robin now completed, many of the top names of America's Cup competition remain at the bottom of a topsy-turvy results table. The international jury will tonight hear a request for redress filed by All4One against the race committee. The French/German team is questioning the setup of the leeward mark in the race they lost to BMW Oracle Racing Team. Provisional win-loss leaderboard after Wednesday racing * Penalties deducted by Jury/Umpires * Having changed the schedule around yesterday evening to ensure that all the teams had raced each other, PRO Peter 'Luigi' Reggio had every intention of getting racing started earlier today at 0900. The wind however, didn't fill in until about 1130 when the first match of started between the Russians onboard Synergy and Mascalzone Latino. Skipper Karol Jablonski did a good job winning the start and the Russian team led the host team around the course. On the final downwind leg, Skipper Gavin Brady moved in on the Russians and Synergy incurred one penalty swiftly followed by a second penalty for heckling the umpires. Another win for Mascalzone Latino. In race two, Synergy was up against Emirates Team New Zealand. It turned out to be another close match but it was Emirates Team New Zealand who claimed the victory. As the winds continued to build, the racing got closer and more exciting. In race three it was Jochen Schumann's ALL4ONE up against BMW Oracle Racing. The Franco-German team did an excellent job to keep ahead of the America's Cup holders throughout the race, before an issue with their spinnaker prevented them from gybing on the final downwind conceding victory to the Americans. ALL4ONE are requesting redress questioning the set up of the leeward mark, so the outcome of this race could change. Going into today, we were 3-0. A good position to be in, but it is still early in the event. Our race against Luna Rossa got off at 1640 with 18-22 knots of wind. It promised to be a close match with Ed Baird helming and Torben Grael calling the shots on the Italian boat. Our helmsman, Terry Hutchinson had an almost perfect start and it was a work out for the grinders as we kept close to Luna Rossa, tacking 17 times on the first windward leg. As the race progressed, the wind got shiftier but we managed to guard and grow our lead, beating the Italian team by 35 seconds. In the final race of the day ALL4ONE were back, this time to win against Luna Rossa. The teams of MacGregor (GBR), Roca (ESP), Skudina (RUS) and Groeneveld (NED) succeeded in winning all their matches. After four races in the 49er, the young British team of Dave Evans and Ed Powis is leading the fleet. After two races, ISAF Sailing World Cup leaders, Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen (NOR) are leading the Star fleet. After winning the Rolex Miami OCR and Hyeres week, the Norwegian have set their objective this year in winning the new Olympic classes circuit. With 16 boats in the Dutch event, the level is higher and racing today proved challenging. After a long break, Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki (POL) are back in the international circuit: 'We like to come and race in the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Medemblik. This year we have decided to take it easy and sail only three events. This is the first one this year and we are still a bit rusty. We have made some small changes to our boat and need to test them before the Star European Championship early June." The Polish are second overall after taking the first race and placing 5th in the second. Nic Hasher and Elliott Willis (GBR) are leading the 470 men with consistent results (1-2-4) over German team of Wagner/Scheufler. The two Laser groups were last to finish. Trofeo Princesa Sofia Mapfre winner, Javier Hernandez is leading the fleet from Australian Tom Slingsby and Mattias del Solar (CHI). 2009 RS:X Vice World Champion, Nimrod Mashiah (ISR) enjoyed today's conditions with a five points score after three races sailed in the two RS:X groups. He is two points ahead of Alexandre Guyader (FRA) and current World Champion, Nick Dempsey (GBR). The Spanish Bianca Manchon is leading the RS:X women . Sailing will resume on Thursday with the last chance for classes racing in groups to qualify for the Gold fleet. The Women Match racers will finish the opening round robin. Unfortunately, the wind which had been increasing all evening will be very light on Thursday. * Following his disappointment at the Europeans in Split just over a week ago, Rafa Trujillo (ESP) has bounced back to take the early lead in the Finn fleet at the 2010 Delta Lloyd regatta in Medemblik, Netherlands, the fifth leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Though lighter winds were forecast, the fleet enjoyed two physically testing races in perfect conditions, rising to 12-14 knots for the second race of the day with a typical Medemblik chop running. Race one went to Trujillo from Gasper Vincec (SLO) and the recently crowned European Champion Ivan Kljakovic Gaspic (CRO). Zach Railey (USA) who skipped the Europeans because of other commitments then went on to win the windier race two with Trujillo close behind and Ed Wright (GBR), the current leader of the ISAF Sailing World Cup for Finns, in third. -- Robert Deaves Reinventing The Wheel No special variants. The smart Solution Maier Takes Slim Lead at Finn Masters After Evening Race The business of the day started with the annual Masters meeting with the principal job being deciding future championship venues. The meeting voted to make the UK the centre of Finn sailing in 2012, with the World Masters being awarded to Pwllheli in North Wales. Also in 2012, the Finn Gold Cup is being held in Falmouth, UK, and, of course, the Olympics are in Weymouth. For the 2013 event, the current candidates are Cannes and Balaton. After a long wait for the sailors, the breeze finally filled in very late at about 5 pm and the RC called the fleet onto the water. One race was sailed in a nice 10 knots westerly which decreased to 8 knots in the outer loop. The fleet went in after 8 pm as the sun was setting. Maier and Buglielli are now separated by just one point but have a clear lead at the top. Gubi is eight points back in third. Hall climbs one place to fourth and Burrell also climbs one place to fifth. The defending champion Andre Budzien (GER) placed 11th on Wednesday to sit in sixth place. After three days the Masters have sailed just three races, though the coffee shop is doubtless raking in lots of profit. Four races are required to make a series and that will hopefully happen Thursday when stronger winds are forecast. The championship concludes on Friday. Event website: http://www.jklabud.hr/finn-world-masters-2010 Rolex Capri Sailing Week There was spectacular racing today for all classes on windward leeward courses in the strait between Capri and Punta Campanella. The majestic island of Capri acted as a perfect back drop but also created some tactical nuances requiring forward thinking and high precision sailing. It was all smiles on the Mini-Maxi yachts, fully powered up in little breeze, sailing as fast as the wind. The powerful boats seem to glide effortlessly through the water. Andres Soriano's Mills 68, Alegre sailed with precision and guile to win both of today's races. Peter Ogden's Jethou was extremely well sailed today, crew work and boat handling were both impeccable. Jethou had a great tussle with Benjamin Brian's Maxi Dolphin 65, Aegir. Although the two yachts were far apart on the water, on corrected time there were two very tight finishes, Aegir beating Jethou in both races by just seven seconds. This is the first regatta for Alex Scharer's Marten 67, Caol Ila, but Alex has sailed in Italian waters many times before in previous boats, including the Giraglia Rolex Cup. Calling tactics on Caol Ila is one of Ireland's finest sailors, Gordon Maguire, who has been involved in some of the most prestigious sailing campaigns worldwide. Most recently as helmsman on Mike Slade's Maxi, ICAP Leopard. The most exciting finish of the day came from the Comet Class. In the first race of two of the pre-race favourites crossed the finish line within a boat length of each other. Reigning class champion, Alessandro Nespega's Fral 2 taking the gun from Marco Franco's Libertine by the narrowest of margins. 'I really enjoy passing my skill on to others and seeing them enjoying sailing as I do,' he said..' The annual Jersey Clipper Bursary, a legacy from the three Jersey campaigns in the Clipper Round-the-World Race, is designed to assist an Islander to achieve a nautical ambition. Thanks to an anonymous donation the trustees have been able to make an additional award this year, giving £150 to Judith Walter, a 29-year-old gardener who moved to Jersey from Hampshire three years ago. Having experienced some tough personal challenges she discovered the joys of sailing, became a member of St Catherine's Sailing Club and the Jersey Sailing Trust and recently acquired her own second-hand Topper. The award will help her towards her RYA Level 3 Dinghy Sailing qualification 'Sailing is the one thing that has really helped me through,' said Judith, who had special praise for her Jersey Sailing Trust colleagues.
