Beyou Shines In The Light

NY Vendee Race Winner Jeremie Beyou After three days of twists and turns in teasingly light conditions in the Bay of Biscay, Jeremie Beyou on Maitre CoQ won the inaugural New York - Vendee (Les Sables d'Olonne) Race presented by Currency House and SpaceCode at 14:37:52 (French time) today (Wednesday).

The race was won by one of French sailing's favourite sons. The 39-year-old skipper from Lorient, who learned to sail with his father in the Bay of Morlaix in Brittany, showed why he regards this stretch of water as his playground.

With the spotlight on them ahead of the start of the 2016-17 Vendee Globe in November, Beyou held off the challenge from his fellow French sailor, Sebastien Josse (Edmond de Rothschild), who should finish second later today, ahead of British sailor, Alex Thomson (Hugo Boss).

Beyou covered the course in 9 days 16 hours 57 minutes and 52 seconds. He sailed 3,460 miles at an average speed of 14.85 knots. Except for two brief spells, Beyou has led the race since he deposed Thomson on Saturday afternoon. His advantage was never greater than 30.9 miles, but it was notable that of the three he happily declared that he was used to managing leads of 0.3 of a mile for four days and he relished this close-quarter combat.

No Change But A Long Statement
Yachting New Zealand has responded to wide-spread international criticism of its selection practices and criticism by the Chairman of the NZ Sports Disputes Tribunal, Sir Bruce Robertson of the way it treated two Olympic sailors after they had qualified New Zealand for the 2016 Olympic sailing regatta at the ISAF World Sailing Championships in santander in September 2014.

Despite qualifying in ten Olympic classes and three Paralympic classes, New Zealand will only be represented in seven Olympic classes and one Paralympic class in the Rio Olympics in August 2016. Appeals were lodged with the Sports Disputes Tribunal in respect of the Womens Windsurfer (RS:X) and Womens Singlehander (Laser Radial), a third competitor in the Mens Windsurfer (RS:X) exited the YNZ program after funding disputes in 2015. An SDT Appeal was prepared but withdrawn just before the Hearing in respect of one of the Paralympic classes.

Other well-known yachts expected are Dickie Gomes' Ain Mara, Sceptre and Tern. Nord Stream Race
After a short pit stop in Helsinki, which included a press conference, a BBQ, several visits to the sauna and shower as well as some very precious minutes of badly needed sleep, the participants have started leg two of Nord Stream Invitational Race 2016. At 18:45 local time BRONENOSEC, TSAAR PETER and SPIRIT OF EUROPE crossed the start line just off the Helsingfors Segelklubb in Helsinki. A little behind followed SGM and PETITE FLAMME.

They are now facing 560 nautical miles of open Baltic Sea that they have to master. It will be fascinating to see what different tactics the boat's navigators are going to implement. Will they keep close to each other or try and move away from the fleet in order to find the perfect breeze that will bring them all the way to Warnemunde?

1. Team Bronenosec-Russia, Sergey Borodinov, 16h 35m 20s
2. Team Spirit of Europe-Europe, Tim Kroger, 16h 38m 47s
3. Team SGM-Germany, Alexander Holstein, 16h 56m 20s
4. Team Tsaar Peter-Finland, Samuli Leisti, 17h 3m 31s
5. Team Petite Flamme-Great Britain, Adrian Lower, 17h 51m 40s

RORC Morgan Cup Course: Cowes-Dieppe
The Royal Ocean Racing Club's Season's Points Championship continues this weekend with the prestigious Morgan Cup Race, which will finish in Dieppe for the first time since 2013. The 130-150 mile race marks the half-way stage in the championship.

Dieppe is the mostly easterly destination of any of the RORC races starting from Cowes, with stronger tides adding an additional flavour to the strategic mix. Highly changeable weather is forecast for the early part of the race, with a fresh westerly breeze anticipated in the latter. Competitors can expect a warm welcome at the Cercle de la Voile de Dieppe (CVD) and Dieppe is also well known for its superb seafood restaurants and the 17th century Chateau de Dieppe, now a museum with a strong maritime collection.

Racing under the IRC Rating System, a wide variety of yachts will be racing from Great Britain, France and the Netherlands. IMOCA 60, Artemis Ocean Racing, skippered by Mikey Ferguson is the hot favourite for Line Honours. In IRC One, Edward Broadway's Ker 40, Hooligan VII is the fastest yacht on IRC rating. RORC Committee member, Michel Peretie, will be racing his new French JND39, Stamina while RORC Vice Commodore Steven Anderson, racing Corby 40 Cracklin Rosie, is relishing the prospect of resuming the battle with past RORC Commodore Mike Greville, racing his Ker 39 Erivale III.

An experimental tracker using AIS will be available at the RORC Web site

Letters To The Editor -

* From John Burnie: In view of all the recent accolades for Phil Sharpe in the latest Seahorse I am reminded of an email letter I wrote to several people including Seahorse in 2011. I was based in Guadeloupe at the time running a Swan Charter business there. It does not surprise me at all that when Phil does take to the water in his IMOCA 60 in the Vendee it will not be under the auspices of any British sponsor. Ironically Phil remains loyal to the image - even posting the title on one of his recent blogs "Doing it for Britain".

Below is the email I wrote

I have constantly tried to put the "flag up" for Phil Sharp (who stayed with me in Guadeloupe where I gladly allowed him to abuse my laundry, telephone and internet connection for about a month) following his Class 40 win after the Route Du Rhum in 2006. Phil was totally self funded, in a basic Class 40 boat, beating highly sponsored top professionals like Gidas Morvan into second place by nearly two days.

He's a star solo sailor this lad - he has won (or done very well) in rather a lot of solo races over a number of years and quite frankly has received pretty poor recognition or sponsorship in return. Its still amazes me that the Artemis Sailing Academy chose Sam Goodchild who (indubitably ticks all the boxes as a great sailor / but may sail in Phil's wake for some years to come) rather than selecting this obvious winner. So it really does not come as a surprise to me that Phil has easily beaten the Artemis first choice in every race so far – he exudes that certain quality and toughness required in class single handed sailors. Simon Rogers will recall I flagged him as a serious potential replacement for Brian Thompson to run his Vendee yacht of the moment. (Jonny Malbon was selected instead) "Les Jeunes Frogs" on the solo circuit revere Phil's ability - so I am at a loss to understand why so few people in the UK have yet recognised his potential.

Does anyone know some organisation / person who might take some better interest in this young / potential winner? And please let him / them be British!

2013 Botin 65. 3,500,000 USD Located in the United Kingdom.

Our latest central listing is the ultimate racer/cruiser and is considered by her crew to be a 65 foot "super yacht". Built impeccably by Knierim in Germany, she was first launched in June of 2013.

Her owner invisioned a yacht with mini maxi performance, but with an interior that is second to none and all incorporated into a package that can be raced with only 10 to 12 crew. Her race results have proven that the Botin office hit the ball out of the park with this design, as her first distance race she shattered the ARC transatlantic record and then in shorter races such as the 2014 Sydney to Hobart, she was 7th to finish boat for boat, beating all her similar sized race boats boat for boat, which resulted her being third in class behind two canting keel and smaller race boats. We believe this boat represents an outstanding opportunity to step right on the perfect racer/cruiser.
