The race in light north-easterly winds on the Golfo di Arzachena off La Maddalena was the closest of the four sailed today. Light and fluky winds forced a three-hour delay to the start of competition and curtailed it at day’s end despite an attempt to start further racing. Luna Rossa was making their debut in Louis Vuitton Trophy racing with 2007 America’s Cup winner Ed Baird as their new helmsman. Baird won the start against Gavin Brady steering Mascalzone Latino and controlled the first three legs. Closing the weather mark for the second time Brady got out of phase in a series of short tacks and pulled up right astern of Luna Rossa to round just seven seconds behind. The leaders made a conventional bear-away gennaker set while Mascalzone went for a delayed gybe set that led to over 500 metres of separation and an opportunity to grab the lead. When Baird eventually gybed to cover, Brady was sailing slightly deeper in better pressure. The tables turned and Brady worked out to a 70-metre lead only to see most of it evaporate when he gybed for the finish and the spinnaker sheet came unclipped. Inside the basin of the Porto Arsenale, 14-year-old Silvia Acheri won the first of three days raced in O’Pen Bic singlehanded dinghies to qualify finalists for the Louis Vuitton Junior Trophy. Silvia races for the Lega Navale Italiana in Cagliari, Southern Sardina. She won every one of her races. Provisional win-loss leaderboard after Flight Five: 1. Radich is back in the game after a two year break from match racing, “It’s great to be back behind the wheel, I can definitely feel that I’ve taken time out but it’s all coming back to me. My crew have been amazing”, said a satisfied Radich. Adam Minoprio (NZL) ETNZ/BlackMatch Racing, the current World Champion, sailed through to the semi finals after defeating Magnus Holmberg (SWE) Victory Challenge. Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team clinched victory over Peter Gilmour (AUS) YANMAR Racing after a controversial call by Gilmour’s team which took them round the wrong windward mark and Jesper Radich (DEN) Radich Racing Team destroyed the hope of a semi final spot for Ian Williams (GBR) Team GAC Pindar. The race committee cracked straight on into the semi finals as the skippers’ prayers for a more stable wind were answered. Minoprio came out on top against Mirsky beating him in 2 matches and Radich is 2 wins up on Richard. The umpire team, boasting some high profile names, has had an enthralling start to the semi final with a collision between the youngest contenders. Jack Lloyd current Race Director for the Volvo Ocean Race and originally rules advisor to Emirates Team New Zealand during the 2007 America’s Cup is enjoying the WMRT work. After a lengthy debrief Lloyd talked through his views on the WMRT, “The World Match Racing Tour is really striving to create an atmosphere for the public, bringing the racing closer in and building the entertainment factor that match racing has, basically what’s not to like”. Winner of the Grand Prix de Douarnenez a couple of weeks ago aboard "Destination Dunkerque", the young, triumphant skipper from northern France, also won the Transat 6.50 Charente Maritime-Bahia race in Salvador de Bahia in November. As such he has very quickly skimmed through the ‘learning phase’ of his arrival in the Class of 40 foot monohulls. Teaming up with the Breton ‘sorcerer’, Tanguy Leglatin, was clearly a good move; the latter being a trainer, coach and advisor to some of the top sailors, and someone who is well on the way to forging a fine reputation as a ‘producer of champions’. By taking such a fine victory in the Normandy Channel Race, Ruyant has certainly pulled out all the stops as regards the goal he set himself to be match-ready for the start of the Route du Rhum this October. The return towards Normandy from the Fastnet saw the battle for the top spot being fired up again when, after an excellent upwind tacking session through the fog, the Owen Clarke Design "40 Degrees" came right back to within a hair’s breadth of the leader. Meanwhile another duo is, in no uncertain terms, vying for third place level with Barfleur, 45 miles from the finish. Indeed "Appart City" skippered by Yvan Noblet and David Taboré, are leading the way for now, but they’re just 2.9 miles ahead of the Belgian-Dutch duo of Michel Kleinjans and Roeland Franssens on "Moonpalace". Giallongo’s team delivered an almost perfect score line in Scarlino, reassuring the fleet their style and level of competing is very much intact. Being able to produce the same brilliance as 2009, from the same identical team, in a fleet that has grown by leaps and bounds, not to mention the quality of sailors aboard, they have officially closed the gap on the leader in the 2010 series. With his impressive lead, Giallongo easily took first place in Scarlino, however the heat was on for securing the second and third place positions and beyond. In the two races held today, Renato Vallivero on Turnover, along with Marco Perazzo as helm and Daniele Cassinari on tactics, they managed a second place finish in the first race, then nailed a bullet in race two. This enabled Vallivero (overall Lerici, stage one winner) to make huge progress coming from eleventh to finish fourth. Stefano di Properzio on Hulk, with Lorenzo Bressani on tactics, made some tough choices to finish third overall, only to be beaten out by Luca Domenici on Notaro Team taking second place on the podium. The Cup Returns (Briefly) To Newport Details on the trip are still scant, but the BMW Oracle Racing team, the defending Cup championis set to bring the storied trophy to Newport for a daylong cameo following a visit to the White House. “We are told they will at the White House on the 29th of June,” said Keith Stokes, director of the state Economic Development Corporation and head of Rhode Island’s America’s Cup 2013 Planning Committee. “We believe the next day they will be on ‘Good Morning America.’ Then they will bring the Cup here on Thursday, July 1.” Organizers hope the long-anticipated Newport visit is a sign that BMW Oracle is still seriously considering holding the 34th challenge here, despite hints that San Fransisco is the increasingly popular front runner. It is yet unclear if Oracle CEO Larry Ellison or Russell Coutts, who heads the BMW Oracle Team, will join the group, but Stokes said Rhode Island’s sailing community is lobbying for them to headline the trip. Committee organizers will spend the coming weeks scrambling to pull together a more definitive plan, including how they will finance the event. Error is not an option at this world championship from the 22nd to the 25th of July, with its multiple races... Crews will be sought after, as they will have to prove theirs skills on windward - leeward and coastal races where navigation and current tactics will be crucial. Fast manoeuvres, tactical analysis of the conditions, fatigue management and start sequences from race to race... Every race is key at a World Championship. Again, error is not an option. It will be a fantastic event! An exciting championship as journalists could go on board, for those wishing to follow the event from the inside, without the right to participate in manoeuvres. The World Championship Class40 be placed under the patronage of HRH the Princess of Asturias, Letizia Ortiz. SOS Ocean Racing Circumnavigation Now into the third week of Ian Thomson's solo sailing world record attempt and things have been a little tough. 'It has been a hard 24 hours in a SE upwind slog. I have been waiting for hours for a SW to come in. Lately all I have been doing is zigzagging, working my way past Mystery Beach that should be the most Westerly point of my journey.' With a boat that is designed to go down wind and currently sailing upwind, Ian reported 'Its never fun!' SOS is now only 3500nm to the finish and so far Ian has been averaging 8.2 knots. His estimated finish time is Saturday the eighth of June, Ian believes he will finish anywhere between the first and second week of June. SOS Ocean Racing the 40f Welbourn yacht is at present cruising 6 knots around 250nm NW off Perth, Ian thinks he should pass Cape Leeuwin by Sunday morning, which is reported as one of the three stormiest capes of the world. This will then put Ian into the Southern Ocean, which he has be prepping his boat for the last few day, checking everything and putting things away. Solo Sailor Finds A Love Match The Australian solo round-the-world sailor, who turned 17 last week, spoke about her relationship with Mike Perham in an interview with Australia's Sunday Telegraph, and admitted they were dating. "Yes, we are," Watson told the newspaper. "It's not quite as dramatic as everyone's saying, but it's lovely, it's very cute." Perham, 18, who holds the official record as the youngest person to sail around the world unassisted, said he wasn't too fazed by the media attention he was now receiving. "I've already been through all of this before," he said. Perham and Watson grew close over satellite phone during her seven-month voyage. They will sail her yacht, Ella's Pink Lady, to the Sunshine Coast together in the next few weeks. Jessica said she had to wait until she turned 18 to compete in the Sydney-to-Hobart, but it was on her list. Liam Boyd He was captain of the 21s in 1963, when the controversial decision was taken to change the yacht's design from original gaff to Bermudan rig. Forty-seven years later that six-boat fleet, which dates back to the 1890s, lies derelict in Wicklow and remains the oldest intact one-design keelboat fleet in the world. He entertained his children with stories of adventures afloat, of races to Lambay Island, the Moulditch Bank off Greystones and each June bank holiday to Wicklow - all as exotic to young ears as Monte Carlo or Nice. A member of both the National Yacht Club and the Royal Irish Yacht Club, he was heavily involved in the administrative side of sailing. And, a member of Sandycove swimming club, he served as president of the Leinster branch of the Irish Amateur Swimming Association. He was particularly proud to be made a life member of both the National and Royal Irish yacht clubs. His two sons share his enthusiasm for sailing. Michael is a former Round Ireland race winner, while Paddy was CEO of the Irish Sailing Association.
