A Perfect Bacardi Cup Day
It was windy in Miami for the third day of Star racing in the 89th Bacardi Cup and it is the last day the Stars will be alone on the bay, as tomorrow the remaining classes - the J/70, Viper 640, VX One and A-Cat classes will begin racing in the 7th BACARDI Miami Sailing Week presented by EFG.
Today great sailing conditions continued with wind 125 out of the east-southeast and blowing over 15 knots. Today's distance was five 2.0 legs for a total of 10 nautical miles. Following a general restart and then a black flag start, race 3 began at 12:14 with 62 boats checked in.
After a 2.0 mile upwind leg, it was Augie Diaz and Bruno Prada (USA) in first, Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen (GER) in second, and Paul Cayard with Brian Fatih (USA) third. Positions didn't change at both the windward and Leeward marks with the trio that seemed to be untouchable by the rest of the field. In a tight battle to the finish line Stanjek and Kleen finished in front of Diaz/Prada and Cayard/Faith.
This afternoon, EFG offered a welcome cocktail to the remaining classes at the BACARDI Village hospitality in Kennedy Park, followed by BMSW mid-week party where sailors enjoyed great food, exceptional drinks and played casino style games to benefit Shake A Leg Miami, Team Paradise and Sailing Heals.
The seventh annual running of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week (BMSW) presented by EFG will run through March 12, 2016.
* The wind was blowing hard all night and early this morning. The Race Committee put up the postponement flag at 0900 and at 11:00 called it for the day. This is a good call for the fleet on the whole. While the top 25% of the fleet could race in 25 knots, many of the participants would either not go out or would go out and possibly incur damage. If you break your mast, that is an $8K outing. Good call by the race committee.
However, tomorrow we will have two races. These races are World Championship length races; 10.7 nm. Each race takes about 1:45. So it will be a long and physical day. The first start will be at 11:00 rather than the usual 12:00.
The forecast is for 17 knots from the southeast at 10:00 dropping to 11 knots by 16:00. It should be a beautiful day for racing Stars. -- Paul Cayard

Belgium To Host Formula 16 Worlds 2016

The Formula 16 Worlds will be hosted by the Royal Belgium Sailing Club (RBSC) which was founded in 1863. Participation is expected to be high at this edition with at least 50 boats racing in the waters off Knokke-Heist. The RBSC is well known when it comes to hosting major sailing events including the Formula 18 Worlds, Dart 18 Europeans and Worlds, Orma Grand Prix (60 feet trimaran), Hobie Europeans, and the Laser Masters Europeans.
The Formula 16 is known as the high performance youth catamaran and works as a stepping stone for many young sailors to the bigger and even faster catamarans. The class was founded in 2001 and developed quickly; the first major international events were held in 2010. Every two years a Formula 16 Worlds is organized in one of the three continents (Europe, USA and Australia/New Zealand). In the in between years, national and continental events are held.
The previous Worlds 2014 in Newport (USA) was won by the Australians Adrian Fawcett and Jesse Dobie. The Belgium youngsters of Henri Demesmaeker and Alec Bague recently won the 2015 Europeans in Italy. Expectations are high for them; they literally grew up on the waters off Knokke-Heist.

Dinghy Show - A Barometer Of The Health Of Dinghy Sailing?
The RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show saw 8,500 visitors, down from last year's 10,000, 'flock' to see hundreds of exhibitors at the annual dinghy season opener. As a barometer of the health of dinghy sailing in the UK it continues the downward trend of recent years.
In an Olympic year and with the return of Britain to the America's Cup, the Dinghy Show could have expected a boost in interest, but despite the appearance of a number of British Olympic stars at the show, the numbers fell back from last years improvement blip.
Like the bigger London Boat Show, reports from organisers and exhibitors are always upbeat, but numbers fail to turn-around. The show reflects the long-term trend in Sailing Club membership. Royal Yacht Squadron To Stage Cowes To Santander Race
The Royal Yacht Squadron, in association with The Real Club Marítimo de Santander and the Royal Ocean Racing Club, is to host a race from Cowes to Santander, Spain starting from the Royal Yacht Squadron's line on 15th August 2016.
The race is open to IRC rated yachts, and the level rated Class 40 as well as MOCRA multihulls rated 1.200 or greater.
The race will take the fleet some 520 nautical miles direct from Cowes to Santander in northern Spain.
In Santander, the crews will enjoy a warm welcome with a dinner and dance at the Royal Santander Yacht Club on Saturday 20th August while the prize giving will be at the Royal Palace of "La Magdalena", followed by a cocktail-dinner hosted by the Mayor of Santander.
Red Arrows To Appear At America's Cup Event In Portsmouth
Organisers confirmed today that the opening day of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series Portsmouth on Friday July 22 is to be known as 'Flying Friday'.
The highlight will be an appearance by the Red Arrows. Britain's favourite aerobatic team has confirmed they will bring their distinctive nine Red Hawk jets and fly in tight formation, filling the sky with plumes of coloured smoke and synchronised manoeuvres.
The Red Arrows are the second aerial display to be announced with the Red Bull Matadors already confirmed for Sunday 24th July.
Rogue Wave Prediction Tool
Sailing history is rife with tales of monster-sized rogue waves - huge, towering walls of water that seemingly rise up from nothing to dwarf, then deluge, vessel and crew. Rogue waves can measure eight times higher than the surrounding seas and can strike in otherwise calm waters, with virtually no warning.
Now a prediction tool developed by MIT engineers may give sailors a 2-3 minute warning of an incoming rogue wave, providing them with enough time to shut down essential operations on a ship or offshore platform.
The tool, in the form of an algorithm, sifts through data from surrounding waves to spot clusters of waves that may develop into a rogue wave. Depending on a wave group's length and height, the algorithm computes a probability that the group will turn into a rogue wave within the next few minutes.
"It's precise in the sense that it's telling us very accurately the location and the time that this rare event will happen," says Themis Sapsis, the American Bureau of Shipping Career Development Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. "We have a range of possibilities, and we can say that this will be a dangerous wave, and you'd better do something. That's really all you need."

Entry Lists Growing For The 2016 Sportboat European
Il Portodimare di Padova Sailing Club held a press conference for the presentation of their hosting of the European ORC Sportboat Championship 2016 scheduled to take place in Chioggia (Italy) from May 24 till May 29. The event program will be as follows: after 2 days that will be focused both on registration and measurement, there will be four days of racing, with one race dedicated to be on a coastal course. One of the main partners of the event is the Darsena le Saline marina - located within the city center - that will make its docks available free for participants of the event.
Entries to the European ORC Sportboat Championship are made through the event website, with a non-refundable entry fee determined by the date of entry as follows: until 31st March 2016 € 300.00, and after 31st March 2016 € 500.00.
The European ORC Sportboat 2015 Championship will be managed by Il Portodimare Sailing Club under the Italian Sailing Federation, the Italian Association of Offshore Sailing, under the authority of both World Sailing and the Offshore Racing Congress.
Vietnamese Navy Inaugurates 1st Sailing Vessel

This is the first modern sailing vessel of Vietnamese Navy with missions of training at sea and other military diplomacy activities, reported Quan Doi Nhan Dan (People's Army), an online newspaper of Vietnamese Ministry of Defense.
The vessel, 286-Le Quy Don, is 67 meters long, 10 meters wide and displacement of 857 tons. The vessel has three masts, each of which is over 40 meters tall. The ship has a total area of 1,400 square meters.
The vessel, which was built in Poland since July 2014, had its first voyage from Poland's Gdansk and arrived in Vietnam in late January 2016, according to the report.
