Ben Cornish Wins Only Race In Barcelona But Josh Junior Takes Lead
Ben Cornish (GBR) won the only race possible on the third day at the Open Finn Europeans in Barcelona, stealing the win from the race leader from the first mark, Jorge Zarif (BRA). With many of the leaders having a bad day, Zsombor Berecz (HUN) is up to second overall and Pieter-Jan Postma (NED) is up to third.
The forecasts for today were as varied as the flip of a coin, with a range of strengths and directions on the cards. It was also a bitterly cold day with a light rain soon after the fleet launched at 12.00. The strength and direction of the wind caused problems starting a race and the one that did get away suffered from many shifts, the first one being pretty damaging to those at the boat end of the line.
Racing continues Thursday, but now the championship is two races behind schedule. One more race is needed to be able to get a discard and to sail the medal race. After many sailors have discarded today's race result, the landscape could change significantly.

Rio Calls For World's Youngest Judge
As Olympic and Paraympic sailors around the world are campaigning for Rio 2016, there is a group of people that also have to sharpen their skills for the big calls ahead, the judges.
Just like the sailors, the race committee have to make the cut and be chosen to officiate at the Games, and one person that has got the good news and the confirmation she will be heading to Brazil is the worlds youngest female sailing judge, Danielle Watkins.
"As a professional in the disability industry the paralympics was my goal and I'm really proud to have made it," said Watkins as she thinks of her best moment as a judge.
The 27-year-old Australian works as a speech pathologist at a school for children with physical and intellectual disabilities so targeted the Paralympics as a mix of her professional life and sporting life, and with her invitation to officiate at the Games, her target is one massive step closer.
Coming from a sailing family in which her father, Paul Pascoe, is also an International Judge, Watkins was always destined to be part of the sport in some way or another, but why not competing?
"I get this question a lot. I enjoy being at regattas, travelling, being part of the sailing community and giving back. Once I am on the water I am not all that competitive and I don't have the time or the money to compete seriously."
The sailing world is full of role models that are competitive and aim for regatta wins, but the world of officiating has far less, if any sometimes, so who does a young International Judge look up to, for Watkins its obvious with one so close to home, "My dad is an obvious role model as he started me on this path and has taught me more than anyone else."
"But there have also been a lot of other judges along the way both local and international. I have tried to take pieces of advice from lots of people to create my own style of judging rather than modeling what I do on one or two people."

Tall Ships Day In St.Maarten-St.Martin To Be Repeated In 2017
The non profit association Caribbean Sail Training announced today that the successful Tall Ships Day last Thursday during the Commodore Cup in the Heineken Regatta Week will be repeated next year on Thursday March 2nd, 2017.
Several Sail Training Vessels and Tall Ships have already indicated their intention to participate in the next event.
This years Tall Ships Day attracted four CST member Tall Ships and Sail Training Vessels, the Dutch ship Wylde Swan, the Polish Fryderyck Chopin, Mercedes and Eldorado sailing together from Great Bay past Simpson Bay towards the direction of Anguilla.
Youngsters and teachers from St.Maarten's St.Dominic High School took part in the "Maritime Experience Day" on board the Wylde Swan while the Polish vessel had about 35 young trainees on board who departed right after the day sail via the Azores to Europe with their vessel.
All the Caribbean Sail Training member vessels take Caribbean youngsters as trainees on board for one or more weeks with all costs covered by the ships and the CST association. About sixty vessels are actual members of Caribbean Sail Training.
Marlow Coatings
Marlow have recently launched three new coatings to complement our existing coating range:
THERMOCOAT:
A revolutionary new coating that is used as a thermochromic indicator to any rope, but particularly uHMwPE ropes which can experience irreversible damage and potential strength loss when exposed to temperatures as low as 80°C (time dependant). ThermoCoat is specially formulated to offer a permanent colour change when the temperature of the rope reaches 80°C. The indicator will then continue to intensify in colour as the temperature increases.
pH-I:
Another unique coating in the rope industry, which offers a distinct and permanent colour change marker that will change from yellow to red when exposed to strong acids. Even a 20 second exposure to some acids can weaken a rope by 25%, compromising safety. Longer exposure will increase this strength loss. pH-I Static (Permanent Halochromic Indicator) offers a clearly defined permanent colour change, indicating when a rope has been compromised by strong acid chemicals and should be retired.
ENDURACOAT:
Specially formulated rope coating, which offers a significant improvement in abrasion resistance. Tests have shown that EnduraCoat can increase abrasion resistance by a factor of 350% when compared to standard PU coatings. EnduraCoat is ideally used in high abrasion areas such a load bearing eyes and chafe sleeve.

British Duo Confirmed For Transat AG2R La Mondiale
With just under a month to the start of the race on April 3rd, British co-skippers Sam Matson and Robin Elsey are confirmed as the first UK Transat AG2R La Mondiale entry for 2016.
The 15th double-handed duo to sign up for the 3,890 mile race from Concarneau to Saint Barts, Matson and Elsey of the Artemis Offshore Academy join a formidable line-up of Classe Figaro Beneteau II competitors combining forces for the Transat AG2R.
"The competition for this race is fierce," Elsey reported. "Sebastien Simon and Xavier Macaire (Bretagne - CMB Performance), Gildas Morvan and Alexis Loison (Cercle Vert), Thierry Chabagny and Erwan Taberly (Gedimat), Nicolas Lunven and Gildas Mahe (Generali), Charlie Dalin and Yoann Richomme (Skipper Macif)… the list goes on.
All of these guys are really strong solo competitors and together they will be even better. Sam and I have the advantage of having raced double-handed together for a year before going solo, but it's hard to say where we fit in the fleet. There is plenty of talent on the entry list."
Both successful skippers in the annual Solitaire Bompard - Le Figaro, Matson and Elsey now look toward their first transatlantic adventure - from the rough waters of the French Atlantic to the fresh breeze and humid temperatures of the Caribbean.
The 13th edition of the Transat AG2R La Mondiale starts on Sunday 3rd April from Concarneau.

Remembering Florence
Following International Women's Day, it is a poignant time to remember a great woman in the sailing community, France's Florence Arthaud.
Today marks the first anniversary of Arthaud's death, one year on from when she was killed in a tragic helicopter accident in Argentina whilst filming a reality TV show for French television.
Arthaud will forever be remembered as one of France's greatest yachtswomen and charmed the public when she won the 1990 Route du Rhum, the solo transatlantic race between France and Guadeloupe.
On November 18, 1990, Arthaud forever earned her nickname as the "Little Bride of the Atlantic" when, aged 33, she arrived in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, as winner of the fourth edition of the Route du Rhum.
Arthaud completed the prestigious transatlantic solo race in 14 days, 10 hours and 10 minutes onboard the trimaran 'Pierre 1'. The journey was far from smooth - the autopilot and radio failed, and she had suffered a hernia during the race. But the victory made her famous across France and earned her accolade of 'Champion of Champions' by the French newspaper L'Equipe.

Rodney Longhurst, owner and CEO at Riviera Australia, Tony Longhurst, CEO at The Boat Works in Coomera's marine precinct and Steve Ackerie CEO and founder of the Stefan chain of hair salons, now numbering 50 and a six-time Australian Offshore Powerboat Racing Champion, have joined forces in an attempt to lure the world's most famous yacht race to the Queensland.
The trio and their supporters are not considering entering a boat, but are determined instead to bring the tourism, media and branding bounty of this global event to the Gold Coast.
"We want to pitch the Gold Coast as the ideal host city for a preliminary event in the lead up to the 2020 America's Cup," explained Tony Longhurst, convinced the Gold Coast has the assets and attitude to welcome the world's sailing elite, their entourages, sponsors and the tide of avid spectators that follow the America's Cup.
"It would be a massive windfall for the Gold Coast, a yachting paradise. Hosting a preliminary event to the America's Cup would bring an influx of affluent tourists to our region and capitalise on the momentum generated by the 2018 Commonwealth Games. We will have the infrastructure and we definitely have the natural attractions the world sees as authentically Australian."

The Manufacturing Institute has named Volvo Penta's Marcia Kull as one of the top women in US manufacturing
The division's vice president of marine sales for Volvo Penta of the Americas has been hailed for her work by the prestigious institute which develops and recognizes world-class manufacturing talent.
Kull will be honored at the 4th Annual Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award at a gala dinner on April 21 in Washington, D.C.
The STEP Ahead Awards celebrate those women who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their careers in all levels of the manufacturing industry, from the factory floor to the C-suite

Marine Advertising Agency (MAA) is celebrating being named Best Marine Company to Work For in the under 10 employees category at the British Marine awards, which were presented on Thursday 3rd March 2016. The winners of the awards were announced during a gala dinner at the Cutty Sark that marked the close of British Marine's annual conference.
The judges of the awards were looking for a business with a well established culture that could demonstrate leadership and engagement, a team that felt that their well-being, training and development needs were being looked after, as well as a sense that the company was giving something back not just to society generally but also to the local community and boating.
Mike Shepherd set up MAA in 2009, since then the company has enjoyed continued strong growth both in terms of clients and the MAA team. MAA is now firmly established as one of the foremost agencies in the marine industry.

Organized and presented by SNAME and sponsored by the Sailing Yacht Research Foundation, CSYS 2016 will be held March 18-19 at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The symposium is the world's longest running technical forum dedicated to advancing the study of the art and science of sailing yacht design technology.
Professional yacht designers and a wide variety of sailing enthusiasts travel from around the world attend the CSYS to present papers and exchange ideas on sailing.

Morris Yachts and The Hinckley Company reported strong 2015 sales following their partnership and sale of several Morris M-Series sailboats, including the company's first M36X.
"The company is benefitting greatly from synergies with its new parent Hinckley around location, methodology and streamlined operations," Morris general manager Pete Carroll said in a statement. "In 2015, Morris sold its Bass Harbor facility to focus on operations in Trenton and the service operation in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Now we are integrating Hinckley resources.
This year, Morris will continue to focus on its M-Series boats - M29, M36, M42 and M52 - with an additional emphasis on the new X-Type package.
Cuyler Morris remains with the company in a senior adviser role and day-to-day operations continue to be led by Pete Carroll in Trenton. Eric Roos rejoined the Morris sales team.

Stonehaven, Scotland: Hopes dashed in bid to create Stonehaven marina
Hopes to build a marina in Stonehaven have been dashed after a study revealed it could cost up to £20million - and actually reduce the number of boats coming into port.
Stonehaven Town Partnership had mooted the idea of creating a marina at the iconic harbour as a way of bringing in tourists and boosting the local economy.
The group, at the request of Aberdeenshire Council, secured £22,500 of funding for a feasibility study looking at ways to safeguard the future of the harbour.
But at a stakeholders meeting, it emerged that project coordinators PJ Consulting and Associates had advised against the idea - due to the huge cost of the project.
