Byron Kokalanis (GRE) was happy to keep his title but surprisingly, Piotr Myszka in second place was not disappointed to loose his chance to get Gold! "I am the happiest man not to have to race the medal race" declare the Polish sailor showing his hands full of blisters! The 470 men and the Star were the first to hit the water for the medal race in their respective racing area set in front of the jetty. The team of Nicolas Charbonnier and Baptiste Meyer Dieu was the first to win one of many medals collected by the french team this week. With nine medals including three Gold, France is in front of the medal tally this week. The favourites in the Laser Radial didn't perform well in Hyeres. A new generation of young sailors has enjoyed the lighter conditions to show their potential. Ausra Mileviciute from Lithuania has dominated the fleet to win her first grade one event. "The winds were very light. The waiting was the hardest part but I like these conditions. I like to come to sail in Hyeres every year." Charlotte Dobson (GBR) wins the medal race and climb to second, her best results in the event. Tatiana Drozdovskay (BLR) winner of the Delta Lloyd regatta last year takes third place. Silke Hahlbrock and team won the Women Match racing final 3-0 against Anna Tunnicliffe (USA). Claire Leroy (FRA) won the Petite Finale against Kathy Spithill (AUS). Iceland Midnight Sun Race 10th of July 2010 The 75-nautical-mile race starts in the town of Siglufjorour in North Iceland, and winds around Grimsey Island, which is traversed by the Arctic Circle. Further information www.icesun.is Damien Iehl Wins Match Race Espana The very light wind was somehow the main actor in the second part of the VII Open de Espana series too. While on the third day the teams had favourable conditions, sunny weather and at least 6 to 7 knots to guarantee good racing in the quarter finals, unfortunately on the last scheduled day the breeze never reached enough strength for fair racing and despite the Race Committee waiting until well into the afternoon, at 5 p.m. organizers and sailors were forced to give up. As no semifinals were sailed, the scoreboard was unchanged and the overall result was based on the quarter finals points. It was then the French team lead by Damien Iehl to win the regatta, valid also as qualifying for the World Match Racing Tour. Australian Torvan Mirsky got to the second step of the podium and the other French crew, skippered by Pierre-Antoine Morvan was third. Damien Iehl's victory comes after three days of very close racing, where he and his team showed particular consistency and finished with a clear score while the Australians recorded 10 wins and only one loss, yet costing them the final top spot. The wind was blowing from the north-east this afternoon, between 5 and 12 knots. In most cases, the right of the course proved favourable and the RC 44's had to head for the coast and stay as close as possible from the shore in order to benefit from land effects. However, the right proved favourable on rare occasions, allowing some spectacular come-backs. It was definitely a tough day for the tacticians and the results show it clearly: except for RC 44 Challenge - who finished all the races in the top five - all the teams scored at least one counter performance, finishing 8th, 9th or even 10th. On the other hand, some well known teams such as Torbjorn Tornqvist's Artemis or Chris Bake's Team Aqua didn't manage to score a top three. -- Bernard Schopfer Fleet race, provisional results after four races: 1. BMW ORACLE Racing, Larry Ellison, 1, 2, 8, 2 - 13 points * Today was the first day of fleet racing here in Austria. After torrential rains last night, the wind was slow to get going but finally around 1400 we got the first race of the day started. As you probably know, the RC 44 is an "owner driver" class in the fleet racing. Our owner, Gennady Timchenko, has not been able to attend any of the three previous regattas onboard Katusha. But he has come to Austria and he was our helmsman today. What is impressive about this is that today was his third day sailing ever. Yesterday, the practice day was the first time he ever steered a boat. The RC 44 is a Ferrari of boats and the fleet is very competitive, so you can imagine what a stressful day it would be for a novice sailor to be steering one of these boats in a 10 boat fleet race. Anyway, Gennady did great today. We didn't finish last in any of the four races and in fact we are in 9th place in the fleet racing after the first day. He had a smile on his face despite receiving plenty of suggestions all day long. The racing on the lake is plenty shifty, so there are always opportunities to come back and there was plenty of mixing out there. Cereef who started off with a last place in the first race ended up winning the 3rd and 4th races. Larry Ellison's BMW Oracle has maintained their top form from the match racing and are leading the fleet racing at this point. Tomorrow's forecast is for more rain and less wind. After 3 days of racing in the Italian Alps, well-known and ranked-1st Star sailor of the moment, Flavio Marazzi sailing with Stefan Haftka and Christoph Wilke wins the 2010 Alpen Cup with a total of 13 points after 8 races (1 discard). In second place and finishing with 16 point, we have another Swiss sailor, Christoph Burger with his crew composed of Mathias Dalmann and Marcel Simon and in the third position goes to Finnish sailors Kenneth Thelen, Thomas Hallberg and Robert Nyberg totalizing 35 points. Final Results after Day 3, 8 races sailed and 1 discard Complete Final Results: www.circolovelatorbole.com 2010 ORC International European Championship The event schedule starts with Registration and Measurement over Monday and Tuesday, 5-6 July, followed by the Opening Ceremony on the evening of 6 July. Inshore racing starts on Wednesday, 7 July, followed by offshore racing on Thursday and Friday, 8-9 July. Inshore racing resumes on Saturday and Sunday 10-11 July, with the final Awards Ceremony scheduled for after racing on 11 July. As specified by the ORC's "Green Book" guide of championship event standards, the regatta will include seven inshore and two offshore races. Inshore races will be over windward-leeward courses, and offshore race courses and lengths will be determined by the LNI Cagliari Race Committee based on local conditions. This will likely be the largest ORCi event in the Mediterranean basin, promising to attract dozens of entries from throughout the region. The fleet will be divided into two divisions: Division A for boats with GPH ratings of 400 to 599.9 sec/mi, and Division B for boats from 600 to 665 sec/mi, though this split may change once the final entry list is compiled for the event. Sir Keith Mills, Team Principal of TEAMORIGIN, has invited the America's Cup holders, BMW ORACLE Racing, to Cowes this summer to compete in a match race tournament that will involve a race clockwise around the Island over the historic original course that saw the birth of the America's Cup in 1851. Representing the Royal Thames Yacht Club, TEAMORIGIN is Britain's America's Cup team, and is preparing to compete in the 34th America's Cup. Some of the plans for the next America's Cup will be made public on 6th May next week by the current holder of the America's Cup, BMW ORACLE Racing, representing San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club. Named for the year of the original race, The 1851 Cup is a new invitational match race regatta which will become a perpetual event that will be competed for by America's Cup teams invited by TEAMORIGIN and the Royal Thames Yacht Club. This year the British and American teams will use their own ACC Version 4 boats, GBR-75 and USA-76, both are currently being prepared for shipping from Valencia, Spain to the UK. Ashore public and guests will have the chance to mingle with the two teams at The 1851 Cup Village on the Cowes Parade and get close to the two America's Cup race boats used in the competition. The boats will be moored in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron and will be in full view for all to see. TEAMORIGIN's Race for Change initiative, their commitment to inspiring positive action around climate change in partnership with the Carbon Trust, will be running during their time at Cowes Week. Precise details of this activity will be announced closer to the time. TEAMORIGIN is also using The 1851 Cup regatta to promote the concept of international match racing competition in big boats in the Britain. Ports around the UK interested in hosting a full America's Cup build-up regatta, with up to 12 teams racing over two weeks during the summer months from as soon as 2011, will have the chance to come and understand some of the logistics and opportunities associated with this kind of event. In Division A, Racing 1, it was right down to the wire with the biggest boats in the fleet Titan - Tom and Dotty Hill's custom Reichel/Pugh 75, and Niklas Zennstrom's 72ft Judel Vrolijk-designed Ran engaged in their match-race style battle, once again, on the two-mile leg, windward/leeward course set just to the east of Falmouth. Ran however, pulled off a stylish win beating Titan by just over a minute on corrected time. In doing so, she not only won her class, but also won Division A overall. There was no great surprise to see Sin Duda - the American Santa Cruz 52 helmed owned by Chicago-based Lindsey Duda and her 15-strong team, take an overall win of Racing 2, but interestingly, it didn't go all their way today. Although they enjoyed close racing once again with Stefan Lehnert and team on the German 56ft Trip/Turner-designed Passion4C, it was Andrea Casale's Swan 90 DSK Pioneer Investments that managed to break the 52's complete domination of the class by winning today's race on corrected time. Marc Glimcher and his team on J/122 Catapult secured an overall win of Racing 3 by winning today's final race, beating Peter Peake and team on the extremely competitive Reichel Pugh 44 Peake Yacht Services Storm by just two points overall. Catapult also finished third overall in Division A behind Titan. Prizegiving for the 43rd edition of Antigua Sailing took place this evening at Nelson's Dockyard in English Harbour. I believe most would agree that these classes gave the most intense offshore and coastal racing. Could IRC rules be modified so that a boat asking for a rating in a level rating class would be given one or two options to correct their initial rating to arrive at correct rating - using simply adjusted and easily verified factors such as corrector weights or sail area. * From Graeme Sweeney: The Aldeburgh Boat yard continues trading after the tragic fire that swept through its yard on the 28th April 2010. several boats were destroyed in the blaze and traditional tools and equipment were lost to the fire, but the skills needed to maintain and keep traditional vessels afloat remains.
