After over 25 knots of Bora wind on the race's eve, Barcolana44 featured a very light southeast wind at the start which dropped to dead calm leaving most of the fleet in the middle of the Gulf. The weather forecasts said a west wind would have started blowing but it didn't and only 20 boats managed to cross the finish line after sailing around the 17-mile course. At the start, Vasco Vascotto at the helm of TP52 Aniene 1a Classe, slowly sailed ahead surprising Esimit Europa 2 and holding the lead for the first minutes together with Maxi Jena of Mitja Kosmina. After fifteen minutes Esimit Europa 2 managed to get out of the bundle at the start and after two tacks took the lead. She rounded the first mark with a large advantage. The yacht helmed by Alberto Bolzan, with skipper Jochen Schumann, fought alone against dead calm to finish the race and already thinking about her next event: setting a new record sailing from Trieste to La Valletta. The miracle this year comes from the small 40-foot Sayonara, first of 1st class (first in her category for 10 years in a row) of Roberto Bertocchi: 11 crew members and a 120 sqm gennaker hoisted about 20 times to catch any puff of wind. The finish line in Barcola welcomes only twenty boats. The results feature 20 boats finished out of 1737 at the start, but according to the special rules of the Barcolana, a further 58 boats who have passed the gate at Miramare within the time limit will be able to be included in the rankings if they send, as provided in the Sailing Instructions, the race declaration showing the time when they crossed the gate. Realstone Sailing Winner of the Vulcain Trophy 2012 Today's sailing has been an exciting battle between the top three: Realstone Sailing, Ladycat and Alinghi. Despite a cloudy sky and a lack of wind until 2 pm, the competitors of the Grand Prix Facchinetti Automobiles were sent on the water to sail three fantastic races, the last one in stormy conditions: "To finish the season in 25 knots wind is a real treat! It was magical! " says Jerome Clerc after having moored his D35 Realstone Sailing at the dock at the Societe Nautique de Genève. "We had to win the last race to win the Grand Prix! It was fabulous! " Realstone Sailing has been throughout the year a training platform for the young sailors from the Regatta Training Center, who showed once again this weekend the extent of their talent. Nine crewmembers were selected early in the season to sail on the Decision 35. The Renaissance Re Junior Gold Cup - now in its 10th year - is an event that brings the best young International Optimist Class sailors from around the world to Bermuda. In doing so, it also creates a unique opportunity for Bermuda sailors to host and compete against many national champions who also become lifelong friends. Chase's sportsmanlike demeanor, sailing talent and overall performance both on the water and off made him a great recipient for this new award. Cooper is emerging as a top young Bermuda sailor who showed he has honed his skills and is competitive with the world's best young Opti sailors. Cooper is the first Bermuda sailor to have his name inscribed on the new Dick Kempe Trophy. The trophy honours the memory of the late Dick Kempe, a Royal Bermuda Yacht Club commodore and well-respected international juror. Kempe was very devoted to developing and encouraging youth sailing. Tom Clout, Matthew Wark and Rob Bell (Pure Blonde) excelled in the 10-knot SE breeze to score a convincing 1m28s win after taking the lead on the second lap of the course. Kenwood-Rabbitohs (Brett Van Munster, Kieryn Cowan and Joel Castle) finished second after leading for the first lap, while Thurlow Fisher Lawyers (Michael Coxon, David O'Connor and Nathan Ellis) finished a further 3m5s back in third place. Today's race was a good hit out for the teams as there were many new crews out for the first time together. Race 2 of the series will be sailed next Sunday with the Spectator Ferry leaving Double Bay Public Wharf at 2.15pm. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League www.18footers.com.au National Team Racing in the Baltic The Royal Ocean Cup is a race between national teams each consisting of 3 boats: an X-35 One Design boat, one boat in ORCi Class 1 (zless than 600 sec/mi GPH) and one boat in ORCi Class 2 (≥600 sec/mi GPH). No more than two teams may represent each nation, and crews will be a mixture of professional and amateur sailors. Winner of the Cup will be the team with the lowest combined score earned in each class. It has been the vision of Royal Danish Yachtclub to create an event that will - like the Admirals Cup in the past - take place every second year at the same location. Now the venue will be Bornholm not Cowes, where the races will be a combination of windward-leeward races and an offshore race. The reason for choosing Bornholm was for three simple reasons: First, it is the most central point in the Baltic bringing the overall transportation time to a minimum for all countries to meet. Second, the sailing waters around the island are perfectly suited for costal racing, offering great facilities for courses close to the land and excellent spectator opportunities. Third, the island offers a wide range of accommodation facilities and restaurants for the teams, and entertainment and leisure facilities for their families and friends. Inquiries made before November 1st should be e-mailed to or What Do We Do Now? 188 Days of AC 'Off Season' The numbers were good, but with Fleet Week taking place in San Francisco at the same time, they were always going to be. Just as ACEA tried to make us believe that the people tanning on the beach in Cascais where there to watch the wing-sailed cats, the numbers from the most previous regatta are inflated a little by things that have nothing to do with the America's Cup marketing team. But there's nothing wrong with that. Thanks to the scheduling of the two events together, hundreds of thousands of people were exposed to the ACWS that may have not seen it otherwise. The challenge is to keep them interested for another year without much on the water competition. -- David Fuller, his full article in YachtRacing.biz: Running The Rhumblines Thanks to a dedicated team of flag officers and club administrators the burgee of the Whitsunday Sailing Club has proudly flown over significant sailing events including the Hog's Breath Cafe sponsored Hobie 16 catamaran World championship and the annual Airlie Beach Race Week. This infectious enthusiasm was cast in stone many years ago when the handful of off the beach catamaran sailors met under a coconut palm to lay the foundation for what is now recognised among Australia's leading sailing clubs and marine training centres. Two members who come to mind for their valued support are Ian Davey and Jim Hayes. At various times since the Whitsunday Sailing Club first opened its doors to promote the sport Ian Davey and Jim Hayes have either been on the committee or more importantly spent endless volunteer hours as a flag officer. It would be difficult to place a value on the time which both 'Old Salts' have personally volunteered. They take special pride in being part of the team who have continued to build a friendly club atmosphere. Each August for the past 23 years Ian Davey and Jim Hayes have worked tirelessly with the volunteer team to build Airlie Beach Race Week into what is now regarded as Australia's tropical shirt regatta. Race Week 2012 again featured top class racing with former Sydney Hobart champion Geoffrey Ross winning the Grand Prix IRC class series with Yendys the former King Juan Carlos skippered TP52. Geoff Ross who had won Hamilton Island Race Week with a previous Yendys had heard many glowing reports about the friendly tropical shirt regatta and was pleased to have taken time out from his busy schedule to finally add this special event to his log book. Yendys was the star performer of the regatta winning the line and corrected time double in all races. "We were particularly impressed with the result; the courses are challenging which contributed to what was a very friendly event". Said a happy Geoff Ross. -- Ian Grant BNY Mellon Challenge 2013 Those who have already registered include some MOCRA multihulls and monohulls from both ends of the design spectrum. Txema Garcia & Santiago Orlando from San Sebastian, who completed the 2011 Biscay Challenge are entering their French built Bongo 9.6 'Baobab' in the Double Handed class and in contrast, Antony Fanshawe, the current owner of the classic 26ft Nicholson designed SCOD 'Firecracker' has also declared his interest. Built in 1962, she was completely restored by a previous owner. One of his 'spies' had spotted breeze on the race track, and rather than raise the AP ashore and risk missing an opportunity to eke out a decent race, Manzoni announced that he would be attempting to run racing to schedule. Out at the start area, the breeze was averaging 5.5kts of easterly, so no time was wasted in laying a two-lap windward leeward course for all divisions. In spite of the inauspicious forecast, all entrants were in the start area in good time and IRC Division 0 was first to go, managing to earn themselves a general recall in their enthusiasm, followed by Div 1 and Div 2, then a combined start for HKPN, Premier Cruising and Classic Cruisers. The breeze was holding fairly steady at 6 to 7kts at 115, so the RO decided to offer the racing divisions another windward leeward, but this time three laps of a shorter course, while Premier Cruising, Classic Cruisers and HKPN finally had a chance to sail a geometric course. With the breeze starting to soften out after the first lap, the decision was made to shorten course for Racing Division 1 and Racing Division 2, while the other fleets were allowed to sail their full course. Line honours were taken by the usual suspects, with Jelik later disqualified for not keeping clear of Freefire at the leeward mark, but on corrected time the final results showed picket fences for Freefire, Red Kite II, Xena and Authority while EFG Bank Mandrake emerged victorious in her ongoing Racing Division 1 battle with Peninsula Signal 8. In HKPN, Will Swigart's Goodwill recorded a convincing win in her first China Coast Regatta, with only one second place spoiling a perfect record. With racing declared over for the day, competitors made their way back to RHKYC Kellett Island for the poolside prizegiving, where overall prizes were awarded by Fay-Linn Yeoh, regional brand manager of St. Regis. Sailors were then free to celebrate their achievements and dance the night away, making plans for the 2013 event. The provisional dates for China Coast Regatta 2013 are 12 to 14 October, with the Offshore Category 1 Hong Kong to Vietnam Race starting on 17 October.
