Contributions welcome, send to Tornado World Championships Showing consistent form and skill throughout the championship it was the Greek team of Iordanis Paschalidis and Kostas Trigonis who came out on top with 6 victories from 8 races. Roland and Nahid Gaebler took the Mixed crown and came second overall with a 3rd place in the last race. In third place overall were Matteo Ferraglia and Lorenzo Bianchini who came 13th in the last race. They've been using the Tornado Class charter boat for this event and are sure to come back and join in for more racing. Nikos Mavros and Alexander Tagaropoulos took the bullet for the last race and finished up fourth overall closely followed by Brett Burvill and Ryan Duffield in 5th place. Winds on Lake Ontario shifted often and blew between 6-12 knots. The top 10: 1. Mauricio Santa Cruz, BRA, 58 points The AC Shuffle The announcement by Korea team boss Dong-Young Kim, which will name Outteridge's successor, may also be coupled with final confirmation that Team Korea is putting its current Cup challenge on hold, though it has paid the $200,000 entry fee, and aiming at AC35. But the cost of mounting a viable challenge in the new class of 72-foot wing-powered catamarans is upwards of $100m. So far Team Korea, which also has links with English premier league soccer club Sunderland, has failed to announce that it has raised any significant budget. -- Stuart Alexander in The Independent, www.independent.co.uk/sport/general/sailing/ * Peter Burling's London Olympic silver medal [Laser class] has provided him with the chance to helm Team Korea's AC45 for the upcoming round of the America's Cup world series in San Francisco on October 2. In 2008, aged 17, Burling became the youngest sailor to represent New Zealand at the Olympic Games. Now 21, the Tauranga prodigy is set to become the youngest skipper competing in the America's Cup World Series. Moving into the 49er skiff, and pairing with Blair Tuke, he captured attention on the Olympic class circuit with back-to-back silver 49er world championship medals in 2011 and 2012 and several podium finishes at ISAF Sailing World Cup Regattas. He and Tuke went on to collect the 49er Olympic silver medal in August in London. Burling will helm the Team Korea AC45 with four crew on board including Troy Tindall, Matt Cornwall, Giles Scott and Andy McLean, who is standing in for Mark Bulkeley. Bay of Plenty Times: www.bayofplentytimes.co.nz * Artemis Racing announced today that Australian Olympic gold medalist, Nathan Outteridge has joined the Swedish Challenger for the 34th America's Cup. Outteridge is well known for his results in both skiffs and multihulls, having won the gold in Weymouth in the 49er Class, as well as performing well in the past four America's Cup World Series events. Outteridge will begin training with the team next week in Alameda in advance of the upcoming America's Cup World Series in San Francisco where he will helm Artemis Racing - Red. Racing will take place from 3- 7 October, in conjunction with the Bay Area's best known event, Fleet Week. Regates Royales-Trophee Panerai
The weather will be crucial this week as the forecast speaks of mixed and varied conditions, from light wind to stiff breeze, from sunny to overcast skies and even some possible rainstorms. A full agenda is planned for the 34th edition of the Regates Royales, the last rendez-vous of Trophee Panerai a true classic yachts world championship. Some one hundred fascinating boats are already moored in the Cannes Vieux Port: from small ones like Dainty, the1922 Westmacott designed 8 metre long vintage sloop, to the impressive 55 plus metre Elena by Nathanael Herreshoff. Along Quai Laubeuf, already packed with spectators and fans, one can also admire the late Eric Tabarly full Pen Duick fleet of boats, exceptionally reunited in Cannes. All go to sea on Tuesday from 11:00 with the classics starting the racing: gaffs, vintage Marconi (up to or over 15 metres), Spirit of Tradition, Big Boats, Classics... Once again, it will be the Dragon fleet to kick off the 2012 event: some fifty boats will compete fiercely for a prestigious win at the "Regates", as it is the case of Italy's Giuseppe Duca on Cloud who is back to replay last year's success but who will have to watch out for some serious contenders in the likes British experts Ivan Bradbury on Blue Haze, Ron James on Fei-lin's Flirtation or Gavia Wilkinson-Cox on Jerboa. The strong Russian contigent will feature champions Anatoly Loginov on his Annapurna and Victor Fogelson on Sunflower, not to mention the French armada, ten crews will try to triumph on home waters among which Gerard Blanc on Tsuica II, Pierre François on Imagine or Joseph Varoqui on Rusalka. Action is guaranteed for tomorrow, with a light south-westerly breeze of around ten knots in the early afternoon. Champion 16ft Skiff Team Joins the 18s
With the backing of MOJO WINE, 24-year-old James Dorron will skipper the skiff with Ricky Bridges and Mike McKensey adding to a powerful combination of ability and experience. While it will be the first season in the 18s for James and Ricky, Mike has already had two seasons in the skiff and recorded excellent fourth placings in each of the 2011 and 2012 Giltinan Championships. James Dorron is a two-time winner of the Australian 16 Footer Championship as well as winner of the NSW Championship in the 16s. In 2008, as a 19-year-old, he became the youngest skipper to win an Australian 16 Footer Championship when he scored the first of his two victories in FIRE STOPPING. He successfully defended his national title in 2009 and also won the 2010 NSW Championships before taking a year off from sailing. Ricky Bridges teamed with Lee Knapton and Peter Mackie to win the 2010-2011 Australian 16 Footer Championship and has filled in on occasions in the 18s. He was also VJ Junior Australian champion in 1993-1994. Mike sailed with Matt Searle and Archie Massey (as Red Claw) to finish fourth at the 2011 Giltinan then teamed with Archie Massey and Dan Wilsdon (Mojo Wine) to finish fourth again in the 2012 Giltinan. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ready For The Double? It is looking better all the time for Gavignet's international team lead the MOD70 European Tour fleet towards Marseille, where Leg 4 from Cascais should finish Monday morning. Musandam-Oman Sail had a handy margin of 84.3 miles over second placed Race for Water with some 400 miles to go to the finish line on Sunday afternoon's 1230hrs UTC report. After a desperately complex and challenging night the three leading boats were spearheading the charge into the new, stronger breeze, making more than 20kts. Indeed the leader was making 22kts and FONCIA, in third place, some 25kts, on a direct angle towards Marseille. And a testing finish is predicted as a frontal system brings up to 30kts and some rain into the northern Med, conditions which might require teams to modulate their pace. Given that the fleet was originally billed with an ETA of Sunday, it is not a surprise that the - given the slow progress in light winds since the start, the course has been shortened. Instead of turning west at the Porquerolles off Hyeres, the fleet will come direct to a mark of Casssis, just to the east of Marseille rounding into the bay from the east. In the duel for the overall MOD70 European Tour leadership, Michel Desjoyeaux's FONCIA - which was on top of the leaderboard when the fleet left Portugal - is in excellent shape to increase their points margin on Yann Guichard's Spindrift racing. Russian Competitors Make Their Mark Race 1 was won by Anna Basalkina (RUS), at her first International SB20 class championships. Basalkina will be one to watch given her form in this first race; previously she sailed the 470 and Ynglin classes for Russia at the Olympics. Oleg Zherebtsov/Rodion Luka (RUS) put in a great performance today and were rarely far from the front of the fleet. They appear to be performing well in their new boat and lead the fleet after the first day of racing. After a poor first race, Craig Burlton, Roger Gilbert and Stpehen 'AB' White found their groove and put in 2 further strong performances and lie 7th over night. Geoff Carveth (GBR) in his newly branded WKD 'Have you got a wicked side?' SB20, is sailing with Lesley Dhonau, Roger Hudson and Kate McGregor. They appear to have gelled well as a crew having only sailed together last weekend at the Dutch Open Championships, where they won. Roger Hudson (RSA) and Kate McGregor (GBR) have both just finished their Olympic campaigns in Weymouth, in the 470 class and Match Racing Elliot 6m respectively; it's great to see them sailing in the fleet. Today's conditions may have lulled the fleet into a false sense of security. The forecast is for more and more wind as the event progresses; this will certainly sort the men from the boys. Racing continues tomorrow on Day 2 of the Magic Marine European Championships tomorrow when 3 further races are scheduled. -- Katie Ashworth www.euros2012.SB20class.com Running The Rhumblines Presently Bobby D trails provisional leader Craig Piccinelli's Wobbly Boot and the Mike Keyte skippered Take Flight but four wins from the past five races suggests Bobby D remains as a strong challenger. Consistent results by the experienced Wobbly Boot crew have allowed them to hold a slender 5 point lead over Take Flight who holds second by a slender 1 point margin from the improving Bobby D. All three crews who have show the potential to win the 2012 Club Championship trophy are poised to become engaged in a spirited tactical struggle with Wobbly Boot becoming the obvious target while Mike Keyte can expect to become involved in a boat on boat match race to protect second against the improving form of Bobby D. The present point score suggests all three skippers who understand that both the wind velocity and the tricky current hold the more important challenges remain focused on staying ahead of the important tide-gates which can make or break a winning result. Wobbly Boot which has won only two of the 12 races remains in control of the progressive points while third placed Bobby D which has scored a 3-1-1-1 compared with Wobbly Boot's 2-2-3-3 and Take Flight's 4-3-2-5 in the past four races is poised to provide a tactical headache for their rivals. In the other classes Club Commodore Rob Davis and his Breakaway crew are faced with a test of their tactical skill from the Dewi Hughes skippered Anthea for control of the Division 3 championship. Rob Davis has always managed to produce his best with Breakaway when required however he will be hard pressed to protect his 2 point lead from the equally determined Dewi Hughes and his Anthea crew. Catamaran skipper Peter Berry who won the 2011 Airlie Beach Race Week championship will have to make room for the 2012 Club championship trophy in his personal locker after J'Ouvert capitalised of the dramatic capsize of Peter Millar's Cynophobe to set up a an unchallenged lead in the Multihull class championship. -- Ian Grant ISA Junior All Ireland Sailing Championship
Conditions remained ideal with a steady easterly breeze of between 10 and 12 knots on the windward leeward course. At 1.25pm the top 10 sailors, consisting of eight boys and two girls, crossed the start line for the last time. Fionn got off to a bad start but echoing his skill from the previous races, he sailed hard and rounded the first mark in first place. The wind dropped off to only 3 knots at the windward mark but Fionn extended his lead while his cousin Eoin Lyden chased him in vain from second place. Never wavering from his leading position, Fionn crossed the finish line in first place to take the ISA Junior All Ireland Championship title with an astonishing nine race wins from a total of nine races sailed and a grand total of 9 points. Meanwhile Finn Lynch from the National Yacht Club and Eoin Lyden from Royal Cork Yacht Club had been fighting it out for the silver. Finn had a four point lead going in to the medal race but the 2012 ISAF Youth Worlds silver medallist had a disastrous final race finishing in 10th place. The additional 20 points meant he dropped to third overall to take the bronze. Eoin however sailed a great race finishing in second place moving him up to second overall to take the silver. Competing for the title of First Girl were Aisling Keller from Lough Derg and Laura Gilmore from Northern Ireland. Both girls had sailed a strong regatta with a total of nine top 10 finishes between them but ultimately a 4th in the medal race for Aisling saw her finish the regatta in 7th overall taking the prize for Frist Girl with Laura finishing in 9th overall. After untying the mooring ropes, Whelan and a friend bounced up the estuary "like a pinball machine" shouting "I'm a pirate", according to eye witnesses. Over 30 ambulance, police, coastguard and RNLI officers saw the ferry collide into a £70,000 fibreglass catamaran, Force Majeure, causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage and hit a moored vessel called Tomcat. Torquay magistrates' court heard that Whelan, "noticed the hotels getting a long way away" before dialling 999 and identifying herself as Jack Sparrow, the lead role in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. According to a report in The Sun, Whelan said: "What are you going to do now? I believe this is out of your jurisdiction." The pair finally came to a stop in still water about a mile upstream where lifeboats arrived to ferry them back to the harbour. Whelan was found guilty and sentenced to 122 days in jail.
