Sunseeker Australia Cup

Sunseeker Australia Cup Perth, Western Australia: Phil Robertson of New Zealand on his way to a clean sweep on the first day of the Sunseeker Australia Cup. With skill and guile that belies his age, the young Kiwi skipper Phil Robertson manoeuvred his way through the first day of the Sunseeker Australia Cup undefeated in a field that would over awe considerably older skippers.

Most notable of the scalps he collected on the first day was last year's winner Torvar Mirsky, the home-town boy who is currently fourth on the World Tour leader board, and hoping to capture the world title next week in Malaysia.

In other matches he downed fellow Kiwis Reuben Corbett and Will Tiller, who is one of his former crew, and another Perth skipper Peter Nicholas.

Last week Robertson won the New Zealand Championships, one of the toughest national competitions on the planet. Behind Robertson the ladder is crowded with Frenchman Mathieu Richard, England's Ian Williams and Torvar Mirsky all on a 3 - 2 score line. Making up the top half of the leader board is British golden boy Ben Ainslie with three wins from five races.

About That Dhow Race

Dhow Race A layday today in the Louis Vuitton Trophy, this report from last weekend's Dhow race:

The All4One team found success on the waters off the Dubai International Marine Club last Saturday afternoon, winning the traditional dhow race on Heritage Day at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai.

Each of the six Louis Vuitton Trophy crews was assigned a local dhow, one of the traditional craft that used to ply these waters as essential modes of transportation and trade. Today, dhow racing is among the top events on the local sporting calendar and Saturday's race marked the first time foreigners were allowed to actively participate in a race.

Each dhow was manned by 11 crew from the LVT teams, along with six of the boats' regular sailors. The dhows set up for the start with an anchor off the bow and stern and the sails down. When the starting gun fired, the sails were heaved up, the anchor lines cast off, and the boats started reaching towards the finish line, some six miles downwind.

At the finish line, it was All4One, taking the win over Emirates Team New Zealand and BMW ORACLE Racing. Getting a good, fast start proved to be critical.

Also racing on Saturday was a gaggle of local junior sailors, who competed in the Louis Vuitton Junior Trophy. Racing on O'pen Bics in the lagoon off the DIMC, the junior sailors were vying for a chance to sail as 18th man with the finalists of the main event, on November 27th.

150,000 People Expected To Flock To Terengganu
According to the Malaysian Government around 150,000 spectators are expected to travel to Terengganu to watch the six-day final event in the 2010 World Match Racing titles beginning on November 30.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Datuk Salim Parlan said the prestigeous yachting championship last year had succeeded in bringing about 100,000 visitors to Pulau Duyong, the venue for the championship.

'By organising supporting events such as the 'people's sport', the longboat and kayak competitions, we expect more visitors to witness the events this year,' he told reporters after a visit to Pulau Duyong in Terengganu on Wednesday.

He said that with the continuous promotion being carried out by the organisers, the number of spectators following the events on television was also expected to increase.

'The championship would also be broadcast to 183 countries throughout the world,' he said.

Twelve of the top match racing teams from all over the world would compete in the Monsoon Cup with prize money of $500,000 on offer. -- Sail-World.com, www.sail-world.com

* Triple Olympic gold medallist, Ben Ainslie believes victory in the ISAF Match Racing World Championship at the Monsoon Cup next week would be the perfect swansong for TEAMORIGIN and the ideal retort to Mathieu Richard's taunts of inconsistency.

Speaking ahead of what will be, for the foreseeable future at least, the last time Ainslie competes in a match race for TEAMORIGIN alongside one of the most decorated crews in sailing, he said:

"It would be fantastic for us as a team to bow out at the top of the World Championship and to win the Monsoon Cup next week. The Monsoon Cup is unique - I've never sailed in an event quite like it because I don't think there is an event like it in the world."

Meanwhile, commenting on Mathieu Richard (FRA) French Match Racing Team's belief that Ainslie's biggest weakness is his 'inconsistency', the Brit replied: "I was quite amused to read Mathieu Richard's comment - My team has competed in five events on this year's Tour and we're in with a chance of winning the title so I don't agree with him on that."

Ted Turner Larchmont, NY, USA: The Storm Trysail Club's charitable educational foundation, the Storm Trysail Foundation (STF), has awarded Ted Turner and his 19-man crew of Tenacious--winner of the infamous gale-battered 1979 Fastnet Race--with its newly inaugurated Storm Trysail Foundation Award. (Crew members are Peter Bowker, Richard Collins, Courtney Jenkins, Gary Jobson, Duby Joslin, Jim Mattingly, Rives Potts, Jane Potts, Tom Relyea . Rick Rodoreda, John Samama, Greg Shires, Bud Sutherland, Bobby Symonette (deceased), R.E. "Teddy" Turner IV, George Varga, Steve Ward, and Chris Williams.)

The Storm Trysail Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization, educates young sailors as they bridge the gap between learning to sail and becoming accomplished blue water seamen. The Storm Trysail Foundation Award "represents the rich heritage and tireless spirit of the great sport of ocean sailing and is awarded to honor the skippers, the crews and their yachts and highlight the many historical and noteworthy blue water passages of the past."

All 19 members of the Tenacious crew will have their names engraved on the award: a brass bell cast specially for the occasion. Twelve of the crew were on-hand for a celebratory evening at Stamford Yacht Club (Conn.) in November, including Gary Jobson, who introduced the crew (and encouraged insight from each about the race ), and Jim Mattingly, who in the famous '79 photograph of Tenacious surfing down a monster wave on the run back from Fastnet Rock was at the helm in his Black Diamond sou'wester hat. (Crew member Bud Sutherland, who took the famous shot, was also in attendance.) Over 150 people attended to hear Turner, Jobson and others tell extraordinary tales about an even more extraordinary race and take part in a Christie's auction of items that ranged from sailing with Ken Read on PUMA Ocean Racing's new Volvo Open 70 to a vacation at the Bitter End Yacht Club.

The Storm Trysail Foundation Award will be on display at the new Sailing Hall of Fame in Annapolis, Maryland.

2011 Audi Med Cup Dates Published
Planning is well under way for the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit season which for the first time will feature both the TP52 Series fleet, racing under the new measurement rule which will take the Series forward from 2011, and the exciting new S40 one-design class which has been attracting worldwide attention since it was announced as the Circuit's second class from 2011 onwards.

The 2011 season is set to follow a very similar schedule of dates as 2011, with one regatta in each of France, Italy, Portugal and two regattas in Spain. As yet most of the city venues have been decided, but final negotiations are continuing.

The 2011 dates will be:
Trophy 1 - Tuesday 17th - Sunday 22nd May
Trophy 2 - Tuesday 14th - Sunday 19th June
Trophy 3 - Tuesday 19th - Sunday 24th July
Trophy 4 - Tuesday 23nd - Sunday 28th August
Trophy 5 - Monday 12th - Saturday 17th September

The regatta format will be the same as previous seasons for the TP52s, racing starts officially each Tuesday and finishes Sunday with one coastal race at each regatta, usually on the Friday. The S40 programme has to be confirmed but will maximise their racing time and they will not race coastal races.

As usual the season's finale, the last Audi MedCup regatta of 2011, runs Monday to Saturday to allow for a Saturday night final prize-giving party.

In 2011 teams will be allowed two training days only at the venue immediately prior to the event. -- Sabina Mollart-Rogerson

Admiral's Cup: Australia Holds On Firmly to Proud History and the Cup
Australia was the last nation to win the famed Admiral's Cup. As many of the Admiral's Cup sailors retire from the ocean racing rail, grinder, mast and helm, a group of those crusty sailors recently came together to celebrate the proud history of Australia's 18 challenges for the Admiral's Cup.

As they travelled down ocean racing's memory lane the sailors reminisced about the challenges, hardships and fun of competing in what was for 46 years the premier international ocean racing regatta.

Facing them at the head of the function room was the proudly displayed Admiral's Cup Trophy. Since winning it in 2003 and with no further Admiral's Cup held, Australia's 2003 team leader, Bob Oatley, has remained the custodian of the magnificent prize.

Led by Peter Shipway, who competed in eight Admiral's Cups, owners and members of many of the 53 crews that made up Australian teams reminisced in typical Aussie fashion.

In 1957 the Royal Ocean Racing Club, including Sir Myles Wyatt, then Admiral of the RORC, provided a challenge cup to be raced for by national teams. The event was to include two short races on the Solent during Cowes Week, a channel race and the Fastnet Race.

So the Admiral's Cup was born.

The last time the Admiral's Cup was held was in 2003. The format had again changed with club teams challenging for the cup and teams made up of two boats. Australia's Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club team of Bob Oatley's Wild Oats and Colin O'Neil's Aftershock were victorious for the third and final time.

'So you could say that in 2010 Australia has held the Admiral's Cup longer than any other country because it is still bloody well here and they are not going to get it back. The Admiral's Cup Notice of Race says 'the Admiral's Cup will be returned at the next series'. There hasn't been one for seven years so we have still got it,' Shipway proudly announced in wrapping up his history of the Australia's participation in the Admiral's Cup.

This could change of course if Gordon Ingate got his way. 'I was over in Cowes this season and the English said, 'Ingate, what do we have to do to get the Admiral's Cup back ?'. I said what you are going to have to do is come out to Australia with three boats, with the format of the Admiral's Cup and win it back.' -- Tracey Johnstone and Peter Shipway in Sail-World.com

German boatbuilder Bavaria Yachtbau is currently the highest bidder for the acquisition of French sailboat builder Dufour Yachts and Italian sailboat builder Cantiere del Pardo, responsible for the Grand Soleil boat brand.

Italian news sources are reporting that the consortium of banks that currently control Dufour and Del Pardo via holding company International Sailing Boats (ISB) has announced its preference for Bavaria's offer over that of the other bidder, investment fund Orlando Italy.

Private equity investment firm Rhone Capital LLC became ISB's majority shareholder in March 2006, but recent changes in the financing of ISB are thought to have left the business in control of its senior lenders.

Bavaria's current investors Anchorage Advisors LLC and Oaktree Capital Management acquired control of the German boatbuilder from private equity firm Bain Capital in 2009.

Sweden's Hallberg-Rassy is hiring 63 new workers at its factories on the island of Orust, most of them from a local staffing company that the yard has been using during the latest couple of years.

"The market is looking lighter and we're prepared to take this step now," Magnus Rassy, managing director of Hallberg-Rassy, told local daily newspaper Bohusläningen.

Of the 63 people, 60 will be working in the Hallberg-Rassy moulding factory in Kungshamn and the rest in Ellös, where Hallberg-Rassy has its main factory and production.

"The market has been recovering slowly, but it's looking more and more stable," says Rassy. "Sales are improving in most markets, not least in our domestic market in Sweden."
