Lisa Blair has set a World Sailing Speed Record Sydney to Auckland solo
Australian record-breaking solo sailor Lisa Blair has set two new World Sailing Speed Records (to be ratified by WSSRC) for the fastest time Sydney to Auckland and first woman, solo monohull record slicing an incredible more than 4 days off the record to finish in 8 days, 3hrs and 19 minutes.

The previous record set on the 22nd of January 2020, by retired Australian Veteran James Prascevic with a time of 12d 14h 41m 15s.

Lisa was greeted at the finish line off Rangitoto Island with a hooting welcome crowd before making her way escorted by hosts RNZYS to Westhaven Marina. The journey of more than 1400 nms was peppered with fluky winds and lighting storms, squalls over 30 knots then hours of calm, a knock down and close encounters with vessels.

"On this trip the weather and seas threw every element at me and because it was a short window I have hardly slept and really pushed my settings the whole way. The boat has performed superbly but I am pretty exhausted," she said after 8 sleep deprived days and nights."

Lisa is the current world-record holder for sailing solo, non-stop and unassisted around Antarctica in 2022, breaking the record by 10 days to add to her 4 other world records.

Following the NZ projects Lisa also has plans for an Arctic world record. The feature film about her Antarctic voyage, Ice Maiden, will have it's world premiere at the Dock Edge Film Festival in NZ in June this year.

Irish Sailing League
It seems that the Irish Sailing League is going to be a big success this year! We're receiving a lot of enquiries and entries on our website, and we're expecting to reach our maximum capacity of 16 boats very soon.

This week, we welcomed Wicklow Sailing Club to the entry list, a great addition to the already impressive list of Cork and Kinsale clubs. We may even see a prominent club from the North of Ireland enter the league by the end of the week!

Some clubs have already formed second teams, with the Royal Irish Yacht Club leading the way by fielding two teams for the event. It's expected that Howth and the Royal St George will follow suit. However, entries are limited, so we advise everyone to submit their entry as soon as possible. You can enter the league on our event entry site.

The league is also bringing many firsts to race management in Ireland. The League has also announced that the event will be run using robotic marks, which is a first for Ireland! We'll be sharing more information about this in the next few days. -- Kenneth Rumball in Afloat magazine

2024 Aegean 600

Aegean 600 Organizers at the Hellenic Offshore Racing Club (HORC) are pleased to announce the 2024 edition of the Aegean 600 is now open for entry. The event is being held over 5-13 July 2024 and is co-organized by the host venue at Olympic Marine.

Now in its fourth annual edition, the race has grown in interest and popularity every year, with last year's third edition attracting 500 sailors racing on 45 yachts from 16 nations. What attracts them is this race's unique format: a scenic offshore journey of 605 miles that starts and finishes under the watchful gaze of the Ancient Temple of Poseidon poised on the sea cliff above Attica's Cape Sounio.

Besides this amazing and historic start and finish venue, the course itself is a spectacular tour that passes 13 iconic Greek islands, including a lap around the volcanic caldera of Santorini in the first part of the race and later towards end of the race through a gap at the islands of Dilos and Mykonos.

The ever-present northerly Meltemi winds that can peak to over 30 knots propels the fleet around this course, challenging their skills in both seamanship and navigation, yet also delivering clear sunny skies, starry nights and warm waters throughout.

Seaworthy monohulls of minimum length of 9.00 m and seaworthy multihulls of length 9.15 m and larger are welcome to enter with ORC and/or IRC certificates.

Recognized offshore class yachts such as Dehler 30 One Designs, Class 40's, Mini 6.5's, Figaro 2's and Figaro 3's are also welcome to enter. The event will also welcome Maxi yachts as a race on the 2024 International Maxi Class (IMA's) calendar of events.

Vakaros RaceSense Technology Returns to Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point
The VX One Class continues to push the envelope in race management and at Charleston Race Week at Patriots Point 2024, it will once again implement Vakaros RaceSense technology. For sailors in other classes looking to catch a glimpse of this technology, the Charleston Race Week Pro-Am event on Saturday evening of the regatta will also use RaceSense to run races from the deck of the USS Yorktown.

Event director Randy Draftz, said, "One of Charleston Race Week's goals is to have sailors leave better than they arrived. Using Vakaros' technology and data to improve one's performance is a great step in that direction."

Vakaros' revolutionary RaceSense technology has been used at over one hundred events worldwide over the past year, from the recent Etchells World Championship to Kiel Week in Germany and local club racing around the world. Last year's Charleston Race Week was one of the first events to implement this technology, equipping the RS21 fleet and PRO Chip Till with what was then a brand-new innovation in sailing.

Sailors and Race Committee reap huge benefits: RaceSense eliminates the need to 'ping' the ends of the line, automatically synchronizes the fleet's timers, and provides instant OCS feedback. The result? More fair, fun, and efficient racing.

The Wolf Wears Silk - Carrswood Yachts
Carrswood Yachts Exhilarating yet easy to sail with an unmatched racing record, Savannah is arguably the most successful Spirit of Tradition yacht ever built…

Imagine a yacht with all the elegance and grace of a J Class, scaled down slightly for a major reduction in operating costs, with fully optimised modern underwater sections, keel and rudder. That yacht is Savannah.

Under sail or at anchor, Savannah's cockpit is a fantastic place to be.

This perfectly proportioned, swift and versatile 27-metre (90ft) beauty has a credible claim to be the most successful Spirit Of Tradition yacht ever built. She has only had two owners since her launch in 1997, one of whom, Hugh Morrison, used her as a trial horse for his current J Class Shamrock V. Savannah has earned iconic status within the classic yachting fraternity. And she's for sale.

Cascais J70 Winter Series - Stage 6
Solyd Property Developers/SailCascais wins 6th Stage of the Cascais J70 Winter Series and takes full Winter Series.

The current J70 European Champions, Solyd Property Developers/SailCascais, of Vasco Serpa, Paulo Manso, Bernardo Plantier and Diogo Pinto, from Cascais topped the table in the 6th stage of the J70 Cascais Winter Series to take also the full Cascais J70 Winter Series title.

After two bullets, and a less happy 7th place in the first day, no races due to lack of wind in the second, the winners opened with a second place, followed with a bullet and wrapped it up with two more second places on the third and last day. "The results don't tell the whole truth as we had really close races with the top 3 or 4 boats finishing in one to two boat lenghts of each other and the top three not being decided until the last race." said Vasco Serpa, that followed with, "Maybe we were just a tiny bit more comfortable in the wavy and mostly light conditions and that made a difference". About the near future he said "This event was a great wrap up for us. It's now time to go to Italy to prepare for the upcoming Europeans in late May. After a long winter of sailing in Cascais we are looking forward to test with the top European and American teams."

Second place in the event was "Another Affair" of Miguel Oliveira from Clube de Vela Atlântico, with Tiago Morais, Francisco Oliveira and Luis Queiroz with very consistent results of 3, 2, 3, 1, 3, 3, 1. Closing the podium, local Bábá of Nuno Silva, with Hugo Rocha, Fran Palacios and Vasco Empis with 2, 5, 1, 3, 1, 4, 4. A few penalties affected their end results. First Corinthian was for the Portuguese Champions Trimarine/SailCascais of Rui Brites.

Positive future looms for the JJ Giltinan
The fleet head to the bottom mark on Day 3. Photo by SailMedia. Click on image for photo gallery.

JJ Giltinan The recent 18ft skiffs Winnings 2024 JJ Giltinan (world) Championship regatta had so many positive aspects that it has set up the future for the coveted 87-year-old championship to reach its greatest heights for many years.

Since the original regatta on Sydney Harbour in January 1938, some of the world's greatest sailing talent, from twenty-one nations, have challenged to become the 'world' 18 footer champion and during the first week in March 2024, twenty seven teams lined up in the hope of becoming the 75th world champion.

From the very beginning of the regatta, it became apparent that we were in for a closely-fought championship when each of the first two lengthy harbour-course races, of the nine-race series, were decided by less than 10secs.

Adding even more excitement to the future prospects of the JJs is the incredible potential and confidence of two 16-year-old stars, who are already making a big mark on the high end of the fleet.

Both Jacob Marks and Joel Beashel showed their ability when they were in first and second place, battling for the lead in a 12-15 knot North East breeze, on the first windward leg to the weather mark in Race 9 of the worlds.

Each has been highly successful in the 29er class before their 18 footer successes, but their individual progression in the 18s has taken a vastly different path.

Marks skippered The Oak Double Bay-4 Pines throughout the entire 2023-24 season in which 'The Oak' won the Spring Championship and finished 12th overall in the Giltinan Championship. Beashel has 'filled in' on the 2023 champion Andoo on a number of occasions and clearly shows he is completely at ease. -- Frank Quealey, Australian 18 Footers League Ltd.
